bogota··on Doctors on TikTok
We don’t need a hit piece anyone in the US shouldn’t be surprised by this. It’s the norm to deal with dismissive doctors and nurses saying inappropriate things about patients. That they are also exploiting patients for views is the least bad part about our current system.

That i have to go to 5 doctors to even find one who will take the time to listen to my issue is the problem.

bogota··on Seattle becomes first in U.S. to protect gig workers from sudden 'deactivation'
Yeah and outside of NYC and a few other cities you just ended up stranded because one never showed up or more likely people just drove drunk.

plus in places like South America uber is the far safer option. I know my wife and her friends hated taking taxis as they were much more likely to be sexually harassed or deal with some strange person. Uber isn’t perfect but it has significantly reduced this since the people who do it get kicked off the app.

A lot of complaints i see on HN are very first world and don’t see how much some of these companies actually help.

bogota··on Ask HN: Is the market bad, or am I having the worst luck job hunting?
I don’t wish TC 0 on anyone but Blind has to be one of the most toxic communities. I spent a few months on it when working at a FANG adjacent company and after seeing people personally calling out managers and just generally any visible person I stopped using it.
bogota··on Intel returns to profitability after two quarters of losses
In the last year we made a 180 from growth at all costs to profit at all costs. Would be crazy if the market just valued consistent sustainable growth but im sure some economist would tell me this is stupid
bogota··on “It works on my machine” turns to “it works in my container” (2019)
Yeah i have used this. It’s about 10x slower though. For instance unit tests that took 2 minutes on mac take almost 20 minutes.

Good for one off testing but not a full solution

bogota··on “It works on my machine” turns to “it works in my container” (2019)
Yes change the entire production environment to accommodate the development environment… it’s a lot cheaper to just switch developer laptops at next refresh
bogota··on “It works on my machine” turns to “it works in my container” (2019)
Although this was always a problem until the mac M1 chips it didn’t matter much. Now it happens almost every week. I would prefer to have at least the same architecture between my local and prod environments.
bogota··on Show HN: Have fun betting virtual (not real) money on predictions from HN users
If you can’t measure it based on some agreed upon data source you can’t bet on it. Well you can but just have fun getting your money
bogota··on 2 Years at Twitter
I think you greatly underestimate how hard it is to find a good build engineer. Two of the smartest and hard working engineers did a bazel migration at one of my old companies and had to contribute heavily upstream to support all of our use cases.

It’s much cheaper in the long run to migrate to a well supported tool that you can extend than have to continuously staff some of the best engineers to keep building on your homegrown mess.

This comment is reminiscent of others i have seen about “building uber with 20 engineers” what could be so hard?

bogota··on BBC ignores World Cup opening ceremony in favour of Qatar criticism
I think this is an entirely different argument than what is being made. If people enjoy watching the best of the best play we should likely support that. I don’t think we can go back at this point to just watching amateurs play it’s honestly just not that fun.
bogota··on BBC ignores World Cup opening ceremony in favour of Qatar criticism
How is this arbitrarily treating them worse? We have a reason to do so and we can if we wish. Justice is rarely ever applied evenly so should we not apply it at all?
bogota··on Red meat is not a health risk. New study slams years of shoddy research
Slams should not be allowed in titles here. It’s abused by journalists or editors who just want to make you feel angry instead of conveying a point. I question info from any publication that uses it
bogota··on Amazon CEO Andy Jassy says layoffs will continue into next year
At the end of the day all that really matters is the comp package.
bogota··on A sleuth’s guide to the coming wave of corporate fraud
The 8% growth isn’t unreasonable but if we aren’t matching it over the long term with similar salary growth for a large portion of the population it becomes a problem. Since salary normally only grows at 2% for most people in another 10 years we are in a situation where almost no one can afford a house who isn’t getting help from their parents.

The middle class has seemingly vanished and I don’t think that is good for society

bogota··on A sleuth’s guide to the coming wave of corporate fraud
Unless housing corrects none of this matters people are making more and just spending it on rent and other essentials.

It’s crazy to me that the house i grew up in and my parents could afford with only my dad working as enlisted in the military now is 650k vs 140k 20 years ago. This rate of growth doesn’t seem sustainable.

bogota··on A gut-derived hormone suppresses sugar appetite/regulates food choice Drosophila
Lol stop making life complex nothing about your comment says CICO is wrong. Self control on the other hand is a problem that a lot of people have. But im sure we will find the .1% of random issues to talk about instead.

People love to say its easy for you or make up all kinds of excuses. A person i dated in the pst liked to complain about how she couldn’t lose weight because of all these genetic issues. Both of her parents were fat and she had recently started to get a lot bigger. I said i would diet with her eating the same amount of calories even though i work out 5 times a week and need 2200 calories just to maintain my weight normally i am eating 2400 to 2600 since my goal is muscle gain. She needed likely about 1800 based on sex, height, and activity level. We both targeted 1600 calories a day.

I lost close to ten pounds (this is not at all healthy dont do it) she lost 4 pounds. I stopped after a month and she was unable to keep doing it alone without me doing all the meal planning and just generally because she was lazy.

I never had to hear about how it was because i was lucky again which was great. I had serious hunger cravings for the entire month but guess what you can decide to not eat.

Prepared for my downvotes from all the people “stuck” at unhealthy weight.

bogota··on FTX faces potential hack, sees mysterious outflows totaling more than $600M
the fact that it has been executed so poorly to me seems like it is an insider who woke up and thought they could get away with it because they hd access to the keys
bogota··on What if regular exercise is the best cognitive exercise?
Your comment was a wild ride. First asserting people who work out aren’t calm and then going into steroid use.
bogota··on FTX to file for U.S. bankruptcy, CEO resigns
You can buy houses for bitcoin in some places but im really not arguing that bitcoin is the best money to use for every day. I responded to a person who said it had no use case. I use bitcoin multiple times a year for transactions where it works better. And i happened to do that yesterday.

It’s crazy how stupid HN becomes at the word crypto.

“A non binary view about crypto omgzzz can’t compute!!!”

bogota··on FTX to file for U.S. bankruptcy, CEO resigns
I have also done that. Congrats. Some places it’s easier to move money with bitcoin as even though i can send money directly they have tons of limitations in place around amount that you can send that is very low.

Just because you haven’t found crypto helpful doesn’t mean it doesn’t have use cases.

bogota··on FTX to file for U.S. bankruptcy, CEO resigns
I used bitcoin to remit money to another country just yesterday.
bogota··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
Sure everything has a risk. I have a remote contract currently that they could decide they want a centralized office and will let me go if I don’t move. That risk should be seen as fairly low when the C suit has committed to it and if it does change it sucks. I would still feel bad for those people.

Im not sure if you are trying to say that because risk is involved we shouldn’t empathize?

bogota··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
You don’t have to be in a bad position for this to become a stressful situation. A little empathy goes a long way. Im sure most of the engineers will be fine however even if you have money in the bank and are fine for years without a job the sudden shock of being thrown into a crap economic environment or being forced to move isn’t fun.

My dad was in the military and I didn’t have a choice but to move every few years when i was growing up. Even with a guaranteed job it’s an extremely stressful situation for a family to be put in.

bogota··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
Yeah that is the real question. If musk can sell this to the employees and turn twitter into a tesla/spacex culture i would honestly never bet against him again. I would also be curious to read about how he was able to do that.
bogota··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
Every company has a cool tagline for how they are changing the world. Very few are.
bogota··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
Really feel bad for anyone who went out and bought a house in another place or made life decisions based on this policy which is likely a lot of people. This is really showing that you don’t respect or care about your employees which is par for the course for musk. However i think what he is forgetting is that Twitter isn’t some amazing challenge to solve like self driving or rockets. I think you will see a very understaffed twitter in the future.
bogota··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
I spent less than a dollar one day to automate solving some stupid government website form that i was scraping data from. I have no experience in that but it was pretty easy and captchas are close to worthless for any bad actor with even half a brain
