bogota··on Kubernetes a black hole of unpredictable spend, according to new report
Locked modules only works if all of your modules are pulled in through the registry. that isn't an option at some places.

Testing environment recreation is impossible at a certain scale. Try it when you have hundreds of people adding terraform code most of who only know how to copy and paste.

I agree its just the current one that affects me. We did have someone get fired from an AWS migration at my first startup but they just turned around and tried to do again. It took one year for a single application that only lived on a single server and we never did anything more advanced before we sold.

Terraform just does too much and is abused. Its great for simple config but quickly turns into custom modules to make things easier. Eventually those modules need to change and stuff breaks but you never know until someone trys to run it again. Then you just pray no one trys to manage their database with it.

Additionally as its put together over time if you actually had to re create the environment it would never work. I spent time automating recreating an environment and quickly stopped. Terraform is the illusion of infra as code and fails miserably at any scale.

Their are a lot of bad ways to run your own hardware. Limiting your infra to EC2 for burst capacity provides an easy escape hatch if you need. However i have never run into the issue of not calculating CPU capacity properly and also would never use VM ware that sounds like IT is running your DC. I could see this being the case for some tiny startup who just owns a small amount of rack space though.

Of course you can pay the cloud providers to deal with your companies bad planning. Thats what most do.

I also would never advocate for DC for everything. As a startup it likely makes no sense to run your own hardware and also likely doesnt make sense to run k8s also however one of those is completely acceptable. Once you get to more predictable growth owning your own hardware starts to look more attractive but most don’t know how to calculate it properly and finance likes to make it merky with capex and opex buckets.

Unfortunately AWS is the new oracle. No one ever gets in trouble for picking it and its a great way to make it look like you as a high up exec provide value. Look how fast we are iterating now with my decision. It almost always ends in a mess of unmaintainable unthought out services that someone else has to come and clean up or move to the next proprietary service.

The last 5 years for me has been soul crushing as someone who actually enjoys managing datacenters. We have seen time and time again having your own DC leads to much better visibility and control on spending as well as lower cost. Not to mention the huge advantage when negotiating with cloud vendors if you are a mid size or up company.

So time and time again i have had to transition out of environments you can reason about into AWS and become a glorified support engineer but i guess thats what companies need now days. Someone who will read docs the other engineers dont want to and troubleshoot all the issues because AWS is so easy.

Im glad I got to learn how the “cloud” works though as i likely never would have been drawn to infra and programming in this day and age.

bogota··on Where Did the Coronavirus Come From? What We Already Know Is Troubling
Please don’t do this here. I see you are new but its not a comment that adds anything to the discussion and is not discourse that is welcome on HN.
bogota··on A from-scratch tour of Bitcoin in Python
Fees are dictated by the user and the time they have for the transaction to take place. The fee could have been much lower.

I think we are well past the point of debating if bitcoin layer one will be used for day to day transactions however. A custodial service or lighting will have to be used for that. Additionally most people treat bitcoin closer to gold than a dollar currently.

bogota··on Mitochondria may contribute to neurological and psychiatric disorders: research
Not to mention most of them contradict each other. I have completely given up on trying to figure out what is healthy beyond trying to get fruit, vegetables, and not too much fat in my food.

Anything beyond that seems to devolve into a never ending pile of research and sudo research.

bogota··on “Please don't add any of my stuff to this project”
What you are proposing doesn’t work with nix packaging
bogota··on “Please don't add any of my stuff to this project”
I don’t think its as simple as respect the authors wishes. You are participating in a large OS ecosystem as soon as you become a dependency of another project. Most people don’t care about the package in this case and just want the package that is using it.

The author is additionally being intentionally dense and inflammatory. They are unlikely to get their way acting like this instead of trying to find a compromise as others are trying to do.

bogota··on Some Americans are breaking out of political echo chambers
I have been reading the economist for a while now and im curious if you have felt a decline in quality or maybe its just my differing in opinion from recent articles.

Mostly i feel more articles coming up that are worded in a way to convince the reader or a certain point without any data. This is something i never really noticed in the past.

It might just be me though.

bogota··on Congress is going to throw the kitchen sink at big tech
Sounds like this would be easily defeated by spinning amazon out into different companies? Maybe that is a good end result though.
bogota··on El Salvador Plans to Use Electricity Generated from Volcanoes to Mine Bitcoin
You defeated your own argument :) I’m referring to the whole nation as poor which it is. Poor people rarely benefit from any government economic policies but in order to have them the government needs to be in a place to offer them to start with.

There’s some other points to be argued such as people now are holding an asset that is volatile but deflationary in nature by default and they have the option to convert and hold a currency which will lose value over time (USD). I’m not saying “bitcoin is going to save them” but its at least a novel approach that i think is worth exploring for countries in this position.

bogota··on El Salvador Plans to Use Electricity Generated from Volcanoes to Mine Bitcoin
They are doing it to make money how is making money a fad? The reality of living in a poor nation like this is that unless they take a gamble they will most likely continue with the same level of violence and poverty. Its very easy to look down on people from an ivory tower though and call it a waste.
bogota··on El Salvador Plans to Use Electricity Generated from Volcanoes to Mine Bitcoin
This seems to be a more and more common “argument” these days. X is happening and it has benefits for Y but it probably has more benefits for Z who i don’t like so its bad.

Additionally ill ignore your point completely and only address Z now.

bogota··on El Salvador Plans to Use Electricity Generated from Volcanoes to Mine Bitcoin
Bitcoin has value that they can spend on doing all of this. You are falsely saying the only value it provides is blockchain security when im sure that isn’t even a reason they thought about when doing this. Its to produced more money for the government and hopefully that translates to better public infrastructure.

No need to double post please answer in the other thread.

It normally wouldn’t matter but in combination with all the other newly created accounts and comments of no substance suddenly your account age comes into question.

That’s great you have experience in aws and azure i do as well but i don’t see how this product facilitates auth in those environments outside of being able to deploy it there.

bogota··on Show HN: Garnet – a developer-friendly, open-source secrets manager
I did post comments to actually ask what people like about it and why they use this over vault. No one has actually posted anything of substance so please don’t pretend like i am sabotaging you by asking valid questions.

Hello can you please stop creating fake accounts with the purpose of boosting your post here. This is otherwise something interesting but im immediately turned off from ever even looking at it if this is how you try and promote your product.

This post is full of bots. All the original posts are by accounts that are new and the comments are very shallow.
bogota··on Show HN: Garnet – a developer-friendly, open-source secrets manager
How does being open source make this user friendly? Vault is open source as well and has a lot more features and documentation
bogota··on Show HN: Garnet – a developer-friendly, open-source secrets manager
How does this work in production environments like k8s or aws?
bogota··on Show HN: Garnet – a developer-friendly, open-source secrets manager
Do you have a comparison of this to open source vault? The biggest issue with secret managers isn’t storage though its authenticating clients. Does this support auth via IAM, k8s, okta, ldap, sso providers?
bogota··on Phacility is winding down, Phabricator no longer actively maintained
Without Evan im curious how the project will carry on. He really knew every part of that codebase and all the edge cases. Time and time in the forums I would propose seemingly good ideas but be shown very quickly and kindly by Evan why doing so was going to increase tech debt and wasn’t the best way forward for the project. Not to say it cant be done but losing Evan on the project is just such a huge loss.
bogota··on Phacility is winding down, Phabricator no longer actively maintained
I got to meet evan once when i was in SF and he was awesome to hang out with im curious what he is going to be up to next. Phabricator was one of a few pieces of software that actually brought me joy when using. I will always miss the diff review process now that my current company is moving from phabricator to github and i’ll be unlikely to ever use it at a company again with this update.

Thanks Evan for all the work you have put in over the years. Some of my biggest learnings as an engineer have been from reading and interacting with you on the phabricator secure server and reading your code when extending phab for companies.

bogota··on So, You Want to Become a Digital Nomad
I really do want to do the right thing but its hard when I am unable to find any clear guidelines. I have been traveling and working outside of the country for over a year now. Ultimately I just set where i live as my parents house and called it a day. The company didn’t want to work with me on doing it properly so im not sure how i would be able to. Additionally they aren’t even paying my state taxes properly because they “don't have it setup” so im being forced to pay tax to a state I have no presence in. This is a company with several thousand people and my situation is not uncommon across the company.
bogota··on Bitcoin Miners Are Giving New Life to Old Fossil-Fuel Power Plants
I don’t know the answer to this but most crypto related post on this site generate super low quality discussion. Mostly echoing points that are provably debunked or really don’t do anything other than echo the sentiment of HN from past threads.

For people on mobile does any way exist to filter out posts like this that we know will produce disappointing conversations. I like conversations opposing my view points but not when its uneducated or just pandering.
