bogdan··on The many faces of undefined in JavaScript
> void doesn’t introduce any new semantics to the language.

I'm sure the author is most likely aware of this plus the context is around TypeScript but I think it can still be misunderstood and if you haven't been around when IIFE were very common you might not be aware that:

`void` is a javascript operator and it does have semantic meaning, it evaluates an expression and returns undefined.

   const a = void 1;
   console.log(a); // undefined

bogdan··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
Exactly. It's unclear whether the primary goal of TikTok regulation is to genuinely safeguard young users or to prepare the public for further restrictions on other Chinese companies. Regardless, given China's advanced development beyond what many in the West perceive, I think it's important for western countries to start taking protective measures. TikTok is unimportant in the grand scheme of things.

Path of exile is my favourite game and I've played it thousands of hours and have multiple 40/40 leagues, mirrors, and lvl 100 characters. My point, without elaborating, is there are people like me who enjoy the complexity of the game, it's totally fine if you don't but the joy of having almost unlimited things to discover and get over roadblocks is what makes poe amazing to me. It's a game that you're meant to dedicate a lot of you're time to it and it's totally fine if you don't like that, just wish people wouldn't yuck someone else's yum. Lastly, I'm likely not representative of the poe's general population but the game becoming more popular league by league should be a useful indicator that whatever they're doing is working.

bogdan··on First beta of Nintendo Switch emulator Suyu goes live
VW got fined for that, not enough though and many others got out scot-free for similar rigging. A handful of cars (within regulations) don't pollute enough to cause harm but throw in thousands and thousand on narrow city roads and then do we blame the city planners?

I'm in the same boat. I always wondered whether the thing they are teaching next is really the way things are supposed to be or if it's once again simplified mumbo-jumbo..

bogdan··on Manuals (2014)
A bit of a boring reply but I think AIs have already solved this. AIs might not be able to handle lack of documentation but I think they solve the "How to read this manual" part. Anecdote: I've spent about 20 minutes trying to figure out how can I turn off a monitor with xrandr but still keep it's desktop contents in the same place and struggled to find anything useful, every single search result was about turning off the monitor conveniently missing the important part about keeping the contents there (I realize this is in part a DE/WM issue as well, I'm simplifying for the sake of this message). In any case, I've asked chatgpt and immediately suggesting setting brightness to 0 or using Xvfb to create a virtual buffer both solutions being satisfactory for what I needed.
bogdan··on Power Metal: is it really about dragons? (2018)
I grew up on power metal and nowadays I mainly listen to two genres: black metal and classical music. One of the things they have in common is that I can't understand a word in either. I really appreciate that because I find lyrics in songs distracting and most of the time cringy.
bogdan··on My Unhealthy Relationship with Keyboards
A white noppoo choc mini was my introduction to mechanical keyboards, I still have it and it works without any issues but it now sits in my cabinet next to my desk. Got it because Reckful (RIP) had one and was doing a lot of typeracer back then and I liked the click/clack sounds it made. Nowadays I'm using a Ducky DK2108 with a set of double-shot PBT keycaps, the keyboard is indestructible and looks brand new, can't justify replacing it.
bogdan··on Linear code is more readable
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that that right variant is significantly better. I prefer it because of the smaller lexical scopes, because it's easier to test and most importantly to me it's easier to extend and to understand what the workflow intends to do. If I had to maintain code like this, I imagine in my day to day, I'll likely only have to extend it by only touching the `addToppings` function, the rest can stay the same. If I have someone new joining my team I can easily guide them to this `addToppings` function and ask them to add support for pineapple and ham, nobody needs to be overwhelmed by the entire system and their task would be done in no time. I do acknowledge the question is about readability but I don't think it's possible to ignore testability, manageability and extensibility. I think the inlined approach simply does not strike a good balance of the aforementioned.

bogdan··on The handshake emoji is more complicated than you might think
> I hate to say this but you might be old and out of touch

I think you're jumping to conclusions too quickly. It is true, emojis can be an important part of communication but until the same graphics start being used on all platforms, devices and services, emojis are a quite bad medium for communication. My phone, my browser, whatsapp, slack, I think twitter too and so on use their own graphics™ which have subtle differences.

bogdan··on Fish Shell 3.2
Fish is my favourite shell because among other things, it has the best support for vi key bindings. I have been using the master version of it without any issues for more than half a year now for the undo / redo support and I'm glad the team has finally released it to stable. Thanks to everyone who worked on this! If anyone is reading this and is using vi mode with bash or zsh, give fish a try, it's so much better!

I've had pretty much the same experience as you. Honestly, linux runs faster uses less resources and is infinitely customizable. If anyone's work allows them to make the switch (eg. No hard dependencies on windows) then consider doing it, it is absolutely worth it.
