bodas··on ‘Remarkable’ global decline in the number of children women are having
You're being absurd. It's picking fruit, not working in a sweatshop. People from other countries want to do it. Who are you to tell them that they can't?

As long as the immigrant workers have the same rights and working standards as any other worker, what is the problem exactly?

> The strife caused by importing a large population of people who have nothing in common with the existing population is NOT worth cheap fruits.

Fuck off with this nativist bullshit. I am a proud citizen of London, one of the most diverse cities in the world. I love that every time I take a train I can hear someone speaking a different language. I am willing to burn this HN account to say: Fuck your ideology.

My grandparents came to Britain to escape such persecution, people who also talked about the "strife" caused by their existence. I do not come to HN to hear the same thing repeated back to me.

bodas··on ‘Remarkable’ global decline in the number of children women are having
Spending all day on a farm picking fruit is not my idea of fun, but I'm glad that there are people (from other countries) who are excited to come here and do it. I certainly enjoy the fruits of their labour. The same goes for waiters, cleaners, cooks, etc.
bodas··on Facebook chooses Canada for Dating feature launch
People tend to use dating websites/apps because they want to find someone _different_. People tend to have friends that are like them, but that is not always what you want in a relationship.
bodas··on At Doomed Flight’s Helm, Pilots May Have Been Overwhelmed in Seconds
Here we have an Indonesian company with a terrible safety record and an aircraft that hasn't been maintained properly.

However, if the computer is found to have initiated the pitch downwards, then the same failure could happen to any aircraft of this type, even if well maintained, if the sensors or computer simply begin to malfunction while the plane is in the air. Absent pilot error, the worst that should happen is a reversion to manual control.

What concerns me is that any software flaws with the aircraft will not be addressed until the problem reoccurs with another more reputable airline in the future, because Lion Air appear so guilty in this case.

bodas··on At Doomed Flight’s Helm, Pilots May Have Been Overwhelmed in Seconds
They say that most accidents are a sequence of several failures, but from what's in this article it sure seems to me like 100% Boeing's fault.

If the only maintainence problem with this aircraft was a broken sensor, then that is almost irrelevant because sensors can break during flight too.

If it's really true that a mere broken sensor can cause the computer to ram the aircraft into the sea, then someone at Boeing really fucked up. Where are the redundancies and sanity checks?

bodas··on Skill Stacking: A Practical Strategy to Achieve Career Success
Is Elon Musk not "semi-rad"? He's seems to have a wide breadth of knowledge in multiple fields (engineering, business). He's not the best at anything other than being himself, which I think is the point.
bodas··on Starlink network topology simulations and predictions
Why would you use this instead of 4G if you are in a city like London though? It will surely be more expensive.
bodas··on iPhones are allergic to helium
If that were true then divers would have to bring canisters of CO2 down with them.
bodas··on Facebook exodus: Nearly half of young users have deleted the app
I completely agree. They have all the users but their core product is shambolic.

For example, Facebook messenger should be the best way to communicate with someone, yet it's surpassed by even one of their own subdivisions (Whatsapp).

bodas··on MongoDB's Server Side Public License Is Likely Unenforceable
It often seems like trademark lawyers must be fairly dim, as a lot of things confuse them that don't confuse anybody else.
bodas··on What Comes After the Roomba?
I think this is better implemented industrially. It's easier to make a robot that can deliver food (made in a factory), than it is to make a robot that can cook a variety of meals from raw ingredients. Both are super difficult problems but delivery robots are at a more advanced stage. Instead of sandwich making robots we are more likely to see sandwich delivery robots rolling around the neighborhood, waiting for someone to summon them.
bodas··on Dyson to build electric cars in Singapore
Seems like a bizarre choice. Why not build it over the border in Malaysia, Indonesia or Thailand?
bodas··on If Printed Dictionaries Are History, What'll Children Sit on to Reach the Table?
Computers these days have multiple megabytes of storage capacity and can easily fit a dictionary into their hard disk drives. So you don't need to worry about loss of network connectivity.
bodas··on As U.S. fertility rates collapse, finger-pointing and blame follow
Because American society punishes pregnancy. There is no practical reason why teenagers who get pregnant can't have a full education.
bodas··on As U.S. fertility rates collapse, finger-pointing and blame follow
There is a significantly higher risk of birth defects in women in their late 30s.

There may be less competition for jobs but when you're elderly there's more competition for people to take care of you.
bodas··on Discord now has a store
VSC is not the exception that proves the rule. VSC is the counterexample that disproves the rule.

Slow electron apps come from a culture of not caring about performance. It's not a technical problem but a values problem. C++ developers _tend_ to care more about resource usage. Any GUI will be slow if the developers stop caring about repaints, even one written in C++.

C++ GUIs are fast because people sit in front of profilers and make them fast. Not because C++ is a magical language where every operation takes less than 16ms. Chromium has great profiling tools available. The chromium team has put a lot of effort into making performance tools available and then people ignore them and say that it sucks.

bodas··on The Electric Chair That Might Soon Be Used in Tennessee
That's what I was saying. The death penalty is about making a violent example of someone (regardless of whether it is effective). A compassionate execution is a failed execution because it fails to make the statement that was the point of the exercise.
bodas··on The Electric Chair That Might Soon Be Used in Tennessee
The whole point of death penalties is to kill someone gruesomely as a warning to everyone else. Electric chairs do that, opioids not so much.
bodas··on Why Italy Could Be the Epicenter of the Next Financial Crisis
That is what is supposed to happen though. If you have your own currency you have more control over your economic destiny. Greece's monetary policy was set by their creditors, and they were insolvent, that is a highly irregular situation for a country to be in. Instead of weakening their currency which at least brings in more foreign investment, they had to sell assets off, which serves nobody but their creditors.
bodas··on Denmark to ban petrol and diesel car sales by 2030
That would be fine except that cars release poison into the air, old cars especially. Eventually banning ICE cars is an essential public health measure.
bodas··on Opera Touch is a solid alternative to Safari on the iPhone
Apple doesn't allow third party JIT. They allow third party rendering engines. Blink+JSC would be acceptable but I doubt anybody wants to put the work in to make that a reality.
bodas··on Did I just waste 3 years?
Quality is subjective but marketing is not. Every person has a different taste, I've played some "good" indie games that bored the socks off me. F you have enough people coming through the marketing funnel then only a truly awful game will fail to find admirers.
bodas··on Marriage Costs in China Are Out of Control
China is slightly different in that the sex ratio is skewed, there's more men than women. So giving women incentives for divorce probably wouldn't affect marriage rates that much (not that I think it's a good idea)
bodas··on SEC Sues Musk and Seeks Ban for His Tweets on Go-Private Deal
SpaceX is an extremely desirable company to work at, it's more NASA than NASA. Even without Musk that would remain the case. Talent squeeze is not a risk IMO.
bodas··on CBS Shuts Down Stage 9, a Fan-Made Recreation of the USS Enterprise
Copyright doesn't turn public domain if you don't exercise your rights. A work only becomes public domain if the copyright period lapses or (in some countries) if they make an explicit declaration to that effect.
bodas··on Europe Finally Has an Excuse to Challenge the Dollar
The EU can only work with what it is given, Trump plainly hates the EU, you can't have an open and positive relationship with someone who hates you. Regardless of what anyone else in America thinks, Trump as President has the power to unilaterally sour the EU/US relationship and he is doing that quite effectively with his policies. Yes if America elects someone who is not openly hostile towards the EU then the relationship will recover but a lot of trust has been lost.
bodas··on Europe Finally Has an Excuse to Challenge the Dollar
As far as I can see, the EU has a neutral relationship with China but a hostile relationship with the US.
bodas··on Poaching Tesla
> This lack of fresh perspective in automobile design is one factor likely fueling the growing interest in bikes and scooters in high density areas

Cars suffer from a tragedy of the commons, even if you have the best Apple iCar in the world with self-driving, you will still get stuck in traffic because of all the people who don't.

If Apple wants to improve the experience of cars they need to start a political party because that is a local governance problem not a design problem.
