bodas··on Bringing Vulkan everywhere
I'd take that with a grain of salt. Apple likes to threaten removal of technologies they have deprecated as a way to increase adoption of their replacements but rarely if ever go from deprecation to removal so aggressively, at least on the Mac.
bodas··on Angst Swells as Australian Population Nears 25M
Well yes, but how suitable is GDP/capita as a measure? e.g. If you care for your own parents or children you have contributed nothing to GDP, but if you put them in a nursing home or daycare then you have. If you grow your own food and eat it, you have contributed nothing to GDP, but if you buy it, you have. If you clean your kitchen you have contributed nothing to GDP but if you hire a cleaner then you have.

A country where your actions are judged on whether they improve improve GDP or GDP/capita would be a terrible place to live.

bodas··on Young people don’t want construction jobs
But what if I want to retire with a healthy body not a crippled one?
bodas··on Facebook’s New Message to WhatsApp: Make Money
I doubt it, Signal is terrible. Extremely sterile user experience, almost the complete opposite of something like LINE. They need to make it more fun.
bodas··on Facebook’s New Message to WhatsApp: Make Money
$1 is a meal. You can't eat Whatsapp
bodas··on Google Plans to Launch Censored Search Engine in China, Leaked Documents Reveal
What a dumb idea. They have 0 chance of success in China and it will just create bad PR everywhere else.
bodas··on Inventory of CO2 available for terraforming Mars
That's reasonable but even in a world war, you need only put people on nuclear submarines to protect humanity from extinction. Martian colonies are not necessary.
bodas··on Adversarial childhood events are associated with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
I apologise for the snark. However there are other much more effective forms of HIV prophylaxis, such as condoms. I find it hard to imagine that any adult would choose to circumcise themselves because they were worried about HIV.
bodas··on Adversarial childhood events are associated with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
Chopping the whole thing off would reduce the risk of HIV even further.
bodas··on London’s Super-Recognizer Police Force (2016)
Not true in the UK, most people apply for their biometric passport online (or by post, which costs more). Adults applying for their first passport may be asked to attend an interview.
bodas··on Administrative Purgatory
Who could possibly remember every forum they have created an account on?
bodas··on Administrative Purgatory
www.haxx.se:

"Haxx is a bunch of friends who work as software developers and hackers in Sweden"

Yep, that'll do it.

bodas··on Steven Pinker’s case for optimism
> And isn't Pinker's larger point that people have been preaching the upcoming "CATASTROPHE" for the past three hundred years and yet largely things keep getting better?

That is such a terrible argument because, for one, it ignores all the catastrophes that did happen in the last 300 years to various peoples.

bodas··on There Is No Such Thing as Unconscious Thought
The unconscious is the opposite of the conscious, if you walk down the road you are thinking unconsciously about where to put your limbs.

You might say "aha! walking is not thinking", but surely you would think very hard about where to put your limbs if you were to walk through a minefield, etc. Is walking thinking if the conscious mind does it? So whether "thought" can occur unconsciously or not is a question of English not of neuroscience.

bodas··on 'Japan's millennium bug' ahead of Akihito's abdication
Works in C too:

10s Wear a jacket

20s Wear a t-shirt

30s Don't go outside

bodas··on Is Python the Future of Programming?
If you are working with a large team, you need a statically typed language. Access modifiers are the least of your problems, the lack of refactoring support is a much bigger problem.
bodas··on Waymo’s autonomous vehicles are driving 25,000 miles every day
Optimistically, self-driving vehicles may allow the west to finally discover the joys of share taxis, which would increase people/vehicle and (hopefully) decrease congestion.
bodas··on 2018 MacBook Pro Review
As someone who occasionally writes apps for iPhone I have to use the USB port all the damn time.
bodas··on 2018 MacBook Pro Review
If it's meant to be used at a desk all the time why does it have to be thin and light?
bodas··on 2018 MacBook Pro Review
I'd go further and say that Apple isn't basing their hardware strategy on the needs of any real person. It's a laptop with only USB-C ports (and the 13-inch only has two of them). You can't even plug a USB stick into it. The only people who asked for a laptop like that are working at Apple.
bodas··on How Minecraft is helping kids fall in love with books
Because childhood is a rare time in one's life where you have the freedom to enjoy the outside, and not have to sit in front of a screen. FWIW I don't think books are a good use of time either.
bodas··on How to build an NPM worm

    Alice installs malicious eslint.
Attacker has control of Alice's machine and signs a malicious version of Alice's package using Alice's key.
Attacker publishes a new version of Alice's package.
    Bob installs Alice's (malicious) package.
Attacker has control of Bob's machine and signs a malicious version of Bob's package using Bob's key.
Attacker publishes a new version of Bob's package.
    ...repeat
IMO signing could only work if it were combined with 2FA so that each time a package is signed, the signing operation is verified by the user on a second device. Otherwise it doesn't really impede a worm significantly because the nature of this attack is that the maintainer's primary device gets completely owned. We are all very lucky that the eslint attack only stole npm credentials instead of installing rootkits.
bodas··on Postmortem for Malicious Packages Published on July 12th, 2018
I don't think sandboxing install scripts will help much, as any code in the package will be executed when that package is require()'d. You really need to sandbox the whole of `node`.
bodas··on How to build an NPM worm
How would GPG signing help? If someone can execute arbitrary code on your computer as your user account, the game is over, you are totally owned. An attacker can simply start signing their package with your GPG key. Since you are probably in sudoers, unless you have superhuman carefulness, they can also get root.
bodas··on MacBook Pro with faster performance and new features for pros
Apple doesn't care because people (including myself) will continue to throw money at them even if they make something that sucks. All of their competitors' laptops simply suck more. Freed from market pressures, Apple's hardware designers have free reign to pursue form over function, a dream situation for any designer to be in.
bodas··on Palliative sedation, an end-of-life practice that is legal everywhere
I don't understand what you are saying, we are talking about terminally ill patients, what has mental illness got to do with it?
bodas··on E-waste mining could be big business and good for the planet
It is certainly possible to meet all of one's nutritional requirements on 1 USD per day of food, especially if you have a chicken to provide eggs.

If working 48 hour weeks, 1 USD per hour is $208 per month, which is a modestly good wage in some places. Not really the minimum, although probably so for a very dirty and unpleasant job in a recycling factory.

bodas··on Roadmap to becoming a React developer in 2018
Not for much longer. TypeScript is such an easy productivity boost compared to JavaScript.
bodas··on Vue.js: the good, the meh, and the ugly
Only because it is more mature. No reason you can't write a linter for hyperscript.
bodas··on Tech Giants Take Their Talent Hunt to Cambridge, UK
"Eventually" but to get to that point you have to endure years of getting half the time off that a burger flipper gets in McDonalds UK. Honestly it's a bit humiliating.
