bobwebb··on $10 In-N-Out delivery to anywhere in SF
I live in Brighton and the vast majority of people I know use http://www.just-eat.co.uk/ which is basically an online wrapper for ordering takeaways. It covers loads of the local places and you usually get free delivery within a ~2 mile radius for orders over £8 or a ~£3 surcharge for delivery. You can order pretty much any kind of fast food from there, although the big companies (McDonalds, etc) don't deliver.
bobwebb··on Ask HN: If there was no internet, what business would you have started?
If there was no internet we could finally fufill peoples' fantasies of an international meshnet!
bobwebb··on The Ph.D Grind: A Ph.D Student Memoir
This is a really good read! I'm a first year CS student and I'm interested in going into research later on.

Thanks for writing this.

bobwebb··on Ask HN: Feedback on startup, Fol.io
When I scroll the page, it lags slightly. I'm using a reasonably fast computer on Linux and this kind of thing doesn't happen all that much. I can only assume it's because of all the elaborate javascript, CSS, etc.
bobwebb··on Please stop telling me whether to learn to code or not.
Stop stop stop... ∞
bobwebb··on Tindie: an etsy for electronics
This is seriously awesome. I don't have a 3D printer or any real facilities for making electronics, but I can't wait to see what kinds of things people make. :)
bobwebb··on Notch's next game is an MMO
He's poking fun at the Y2K, Y2K38 problems. :)
bobwebb··on Ask HN: DuckDuckGo is challenging Google. What can challenge Facebook?
They're still on invite-only. I remember them having some problems, but I think it's also taking a long time because their idea is so damned ambitious...
bobwebb··on Why I Chose New York
Just out of curiosity, which part of the Midwest do you live in?
bobwebb··on The Unwelcome Mat - How Not to Attract Tourists
Which city did you arrive at?
bobwebb··on AIDE - Java IDE for Android
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-31747_7-20109567-243/logitech-f...

You were saying? And it's only $130!

bobwebb··on Hacker News clone for Python
You're over your Google API quota. Also, we can see the error traceback - is that supposed to happen? Anyway, this is really good that you're trying awesome stuff like this and you're 11. At your age I was still writing noughts and crosses XD
bobwebb··on Romanian Prime Minister Admits He Has No Idea Why Romania Signed ACTA
Maybe agreements like ACTA aren't just the result of copyright lobbying, but also groupthink?
bobwebb··on MusicForProgramming();
Oh wow, this is brilliant. I had heard of rainy mood before, but I'm so grateful you've found an mp3 of it. This is going to be on my mp3 player all the time now.
bobwebb··on I Was Just Told “You would not have made it through the weekend”
I think it depends. There are NHS dentists and private dentists. I think the private ones' main advantage is that they have shorter waiting lists.
bobwebb··on Show HN: SocialFolders, "Dropbox for social"
This is awesome! Thanks for providing this service - there are loads of nice pictures on Facebook that I've been meaning to make a backup of for ages, now there's a tool that lets me do that without any fuss.
bobwebb··on Project idea: Bucket List Social. Hot or not?
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/100-die-6-sites-create-bucket-l...

It seems like websites already that allow you to create and share bucket lists. Using the HN algorithm is good, but that's not something that people going to the website are really going to notice. As far as the user's concerned, they don't care one bit how your website is implemented, just that it works. That said, if you can create something that offers a novel take on the idea, feel free to surprise us :D

bobwebb··on A Man. A Van. A Surprising Business Plan.
No alliteration here! Just rhyming.
bobwebb··on Could The Rebellion Against Traditional Publishing Actually Work?
1. Honestly, I don't think this article is about presenting an audacious new method of bookselling. It's just a clever-if-it-wasn't-so-obvious way of selling his new book. Which is fine, I suppose, but it doesn't make this article especially informative or interesting. Bit of a shame, really.

2. Good point, It's worth noting that many companies that changed how products were bought and sold (e.g. iTunes, Netflix, Steam) did so by offering a product that was better than what the competition offered, not sticking two fingers up at The Man for its own sake.

bobwebb··on Tell HN: The Twelve Days of Compu-Christmas
Happy Holidays to you too, OP! :D

I got a quad-core Athlon II CPU, 8GB DDR3 RAM, a new motherboard and a DVD drive for Christmas, so I'm naturally feeling pretty happy about that. :)

bobwebb··on GoDaddy supports SOPA, redditor proposes "Move your Domain Day"
They already pay the licencing fees to the respective music labels, so if SOPA gets passed they'll be one of the few legal music streaming sites remaining. If SOPA is used to full effect then it's plausible they could get a larger market share.
bobwebb··on Ask HN: Monitor size
1280x1024 17" monitor. I'd prefer something larger, at least 1080p resolution. I've tried using multiple monitors before, though. Doesn't do much for me, but then I mainly used them for playing video games and chatting on IRC...
bobwebb··on Ask HN: What was the first website you ever built?
I was about 9, I made some webpages all about the holidays I had been on. They had frames. :)

I also made an interactive map of Majorca, and you could click on the regions and windows would pop up, showing information about each region. I think I used Dreamweaver 4 for it.

bobwebb··on Why my Mom Bought an Android, Returned It, and Got an iPhone
I guess this illustrates one of the downsides of Google Android being free software: when just about any manufacturer can create a sub-standard phone that runs the operating system, it can really damage the brand as a whole.

What a shame.

bobwebb··on Spotify's U.S. Landing Page
I have no idea why it doesn't get more attention. Inferior marketing department, I suppose.
bobwebb··on Calculate n + 1 without using + or - or * or /
def add_1(x): return sum([1,x])

Python.

Too simple? I didn't use any of the signs, and it demonstrates knowledge of the python standard library!

EDIT: Whoops, seems the idea of using the sum() function (or operator) has been dismissed elsewhere. Time to study some more languages, I think.

bobwebb··on Mt. Gox trades rolled back, thief only got away with $1K in BTC
Not to sound paranoid, but if the hacker had a vested interest in bitcoin being undermined (government agent?) then money wouldn't be his main motive.
bobwebb··on A Look Inside the Process of One of the World’s Most Efficient Studiers
The time spent learning the course would still have been spent, had one not used this special method of revision. Still a good point, though. The idea that one can magically learn for an exam in three hours or so is sadly not true...
bobwebb··on Ask HN:How to be Anonymous?
The program was originally developed by the US Navy to help them protect their own communications, as part of their onion routing project: http://www.onion-router.net/ I have no idea what kind of involvement they have right now, but if a 'backdoor' was introduced by the US Government (I assume this is what conspiracy-theorists are scared of), people would know about it. After all, Tor is open source.
bobwebb··on A “perfect” voting system
The thing that interests me about this article is that ~200 years ago, compared to the simplicity of FPTP, most other voting systems would be quite difficult to implement, because all bureaucracy/vote counting would have to have been carried out by hand.

I wonder what voting systems would have looked like, had electronic systems been around at the time of (public) democracy's inception.
