boboche··on Down the memory lane with OS/2 (2020)
Remember back in the amiga days?, “OS/2 - How good is half an operating system?” :)
boboche··on Project Helix by Adobe
Thanks Adobe, 3 minutes of my life wasted to figure out that you have converted the bounce rate, after 2 second page load hesitation, to epic ragequit after 3 minutes of having to go through developper documentation to figure out whats the actual, tangible and practical experience you are trying to sell.
boboche··on RadioShack reinvents itself as a crypto platform with wild tweets
Remember before the internet, those little electronic pocket books with hand-written diagrams and whatnot? Good times.
boboche··on Goodbye, Feedly
Same path here, google, feedly, ragequit feedly due to bloat/jirafication, now inoreader. Up to 150 feeds supported, works awesome on ipad and web.
boboche··on I fucking hate Jira
The day I needed to bookmark the url to manage my options list because I couldn’t get to it intuitively due to probably be being wrong (like 90% of their current customer base I guess) was when it started to go seriously south for me.
boboche··on YouTubeDrive: Store files as YouTube videos
This gave me a flashback of VBS on amiga… video backup system, record composite video on a vcr, and simple op amp circuit that would decode black and white blobs of video pixels, could backup floppies at reading speed. Was really impressive until, well, vhs… ;)

Just did a google and saw it had evolved over the years, used only the 1.0 implementation back in the days. For those on another nostalgic trip : http://hugolyppens.com/VBS.html

boboche··on ‘It was the poor man’s studio’: how Amiga computers reprogrammed modern music
My first encounter with an amiga audio as a music/audio tool was at an amiga-specific computer store that had Audiomaster running off a sampler with some demos.

I was totally blown away watching waveforms and simple audio editing, speeding up, etc.. Remember, this was back when PCs were 4 colors, and sucking at best, for anything audio or video related.

It looked like magic from my, kid's eyes, perspective.

I ended up with a "Perfect Sound" parallel port sampler and messing around with MED, later OctaMED on my A1200 with ECE Midi interface and good ol PSS synth. Good memories.

In some parts of the world, electronic music was a thing, where I was however, you looked like a complete weirdo if you were into that stuff. Seriously.

"Its not real music" up until the PC could catch up and do the same eh ;)

boboche··on COBOL Programming Course
Is there something equivalent for PowerHouse in the v7 era? Other than the pdf manuals which are more like man pages than learning ressources?
boboche··on A Tesla vehicle using ‘Smart Summon’ appears to crash into a $3.5mm private jet
Like I said, that was a while ago, If you watch all the follow-up interviews, including the recent TED talk with prior interview with the host, he does mention the process of thinking having solved it, exponential gains, then hitting a ceiling and having to change the approach.

The biggest problem I see is not if they will solve it (that's just a question of time), its how they communicate their optimism and "almost there" but always pushing further. That's more than annoying (at best) and contributing extensively to the negativity. I guess they are trying to get people excited, attract talent, etc.

boboche··on A Tesla vehicle using ‘Smart Summon’ appears to crash into a $3.5mm private jet
Moogly from amiga?

Kinect point cloud was a total mess, never worked with more than a few cameras and had a LOT of restriction and artifacts, what I meant by impressive, imagine a moving 6 camera kinect with clean signals, that doesn't fail on specific texture or reflection because it track in 4D + AI.

Probably the people downrating are the same thinking the Tesla FSD AI is a kinect contraption.

boboche··on A Tesla vehicle using ‘Smart Summon’ appears to crash into a $3.5mm private jet
Wow lots of moderation hatred when writing a simple tsla comment ;)
boboche··on A Tesla vehicle using ‘Smart Summon’ appears to crash into a $3.5mm private jet
I was thinking the same way a year ago and telling my fanboy tesla friend how stupid it was removing lidars etc., but being open minded and always looking to be challenged, I started researching what they are doing and how they are doing it, watch their AI day video (its old in AI terms but gives a good insight), and I eventually got what they’ve meant when saying lidar introduces noise compared to what they are doing right now. TLDR is they convert photons into a multistereoscopic camera and reconstructing the brain’s behavior towards objects and motion…the way they transform the image data into high quality 3d point clouds is really mindblowing, people outside of the 3d ecosystem cannot fully appreciate that, and its kind of sad.

The camera performance is like the newer starlight sensors in terms of seeing in the dark, and they seem to process from raw data. Essentially, once they crack all the quirks, I am now a firm beleiver that it will better than the average joe with limited angulars vision+rotating head vs. surround stereoscopic vision.

Not saying I 100% agree with launching a beta program in the wild like this, but to their defense, given the current government driving paperwork and legislation to insane levels of unproductivity, innovators and challengers kinda have to play it out like that if they want to disrupt sectors (in the end) for the better.

Not saying the end justifies the means, but I can understand the logic.

boboche··on The case for LineageOS and the PinePhone
I still use lineageOS on my note 3. I always buy generational leaps, not incremental, Note 3 back in the days was a rare 3gb phone, 4k video and quad core, making it a little more future proof. it was a good call, subsequent updates were mostly about speed. Took several generations to gain significantly on image quality. I added a wireless recharge module, battery is easily swappable, I still plays clash royale on it, etc.

Now, I would like better night photos, and some zoom/wide angles, so going to go with the same approach, getting 12gb instead of 8. Only good candidate I see right now is a note 20 because I can expand it. Expansion is a must, I really hate where the phone market is heading right now with severely limiting repairs, gb premium with no expansion, Limited updates for an exhorbitant price and not controlling what I run and how I run it on top of it all.

Software like LineageOS are essential not only to reduce waste, but also to get a minimum control on our hackware back.

boboche··on Running macOS on the Amiga in the 80s [video]
Shapeshifter was epic. Could enrage any apple fanboy around running benchmarks much faster than stock mac because roms were loaded in fastram. That expensive Quadra was toasted against my cheaper A2000 + Fusion forthy at running anything, including photoshop.

There was that other board that was supposed to emulate pcs mac and whatnot that ended up only running macos and vapor, that was a shame though. Awh yes, Infamous Jim Drew. 30yrs later, still remember that name…

boboche··on Update on the Atlassian outage affecting some customers
If their backup strategy is as efficient as the UX of their tools, they should find what they are looking for in 2 weeks… oh wait…

At least right now they are focussed on this issue and that should stop from outputting yet more unwanted bloat in my daily ops for a while.

Guess its time to pay Asana another visit to see where they are at. Didn’t feel it was worth the move 2 years ago, maybe things have changed.

boboche··on Atlassian products have been down for 4 days
It went from an highly efficient and customisable ticket/work tracker to a clusterfsck of a feature creep mess that requires 10 clicks to add an item to a custom field, that’s when you remember where to look because if you are not an atlassian PhD, it will take more time to search how to do something than simply implementing it.

I am still using it because my team is used to it and I don’t have the time to migrate the 3gb+ Database somewhere else for now.
Actually this is a good point, anyone migrated somewhere else using the backup? What was your experience?
boboche··on The Chinchillas and the Gold Mine (2020)
Chinchillas are so cool. Got 2 as pet. Its a little dumb dumb but funny and cute as hell. They never bite but they chew a lot.
boboche··on Strategy and criteria decision matrix: A framework for decision making
I often use the same approach except I lock the weight to rank with unique numbers. I.e. 5 weight items?, can’t use a rating of 5 twice. This forces me to further itterate the criteria selection. Using the same principle across further helps to pick a clear winner but depends on the # of items on the list and how far you want to think without overthinking it.
boboche··on Creating the Commodore 64: The Engineers’ Story
This never gets old… only us c64 kids are… ;)
boboche··on Times are great for programmers now. How does it end?
Epic Solar flare or some capitalist downfall is more likely than those lame-from-the-same-pre-2000 book of predictions that servers wouldn’t need IT staff as they get easier to manage (that didn’t age well!).
boboche··on Commodore History Part 8-The Amiga 1000 [video]
Bbs dial up in multitask blew my mind
boboche··on Commodore History Part 8-The Amiga 1000 [video]
Lots of CIAs out there are resold broken. The FPGAs are the best option since they wouldn’t break all over again… saw those 2 projects but one is incomplete and the other is not really “fully” tested. There’s that page since a while too but no updates. https://1nt3r.net/j-cia/

Since these were made probably with 100nm+ process, Cost of making them shouldn’t be an issue vs. potential sales, (maybe after the chip shortage ease) since whoever owns the amiga patents are not doing anything better than the last multiple owners since commodore… my money would be on fpgas even if denatures the machine a bit.

boboche··on Commodore History Part 8-The Amiga 1000 [video]
Still got mine, freshly recapped. Long live right to repair, teaching kids about retro glory and how stuff actually works at the hardware layer will make sure such iconic pieces of computing will never reach the landfill.

…now if only there could be actual selling 8520 CIA replacement chips/fpga replacement being manufactured AND sold instead of destroying old motherboards…

boboche··on Plaid is an evil nightmare product from Security Hell
And I though I was clicking on a Tesla bashing article ;). Wrong plaid.
boboche··on Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra
2000$ to get the weird uncontrollable artifacts (watch the clip of the girl walking near the tree branches and red umbrella on the top right for an extreme example). I was waiting to switch my note 3 / lineage expecting to finally get something epic but instead I’m disapointed, the pricing is just insane for 1TB and losing control on my pixel perfect ocd to Junk AI made for untrained eye is sad for our digital future.

I’m really impressed at how much junk companies are blattantly getting away, with nobody caring, if that was a 800$ phone I wouldn’t be writing this, but… that price… my note 3 is awesome, if only it could shoot in the dark…

Hopefully some camera apps will catch up to this phone and go raw and bypass all of that AI pixel forgery while keeping anything actually useful in there. I’d rather have a blurry pixel than extreme wobbling layered with compression artifacts because of poor AI replacement or scaling implementation.

boboche··on The Pandemic Boom Goes Bust
Exactly, wall street is following guidance or lower while they are striving to exceed that by a lot, and are succeeding extremely well so far, but being realistic and doing your own research vs. trusting online “sources” for confirmation biases was my point.

Wow lots of passion you should see the points going up and down on this one ;).

boboche··on The Pandemic Boom Goes Bust
Stopped reading at “tesla is a car company”. When I read that, it shows how little research has been done and not trusting anything else. Hate and downvote all you want, anyone who did basic research on the company, IP, and execution knows how bad that narrative will age. Its not about loving or hating Elon, its simple business.

While the P/E compression during a recession is completely normal, and yes, Tesla is overvalued looking stricly at P/E, they will survive a recession blow much better than a lot of companies because of their cash balance, margings, and operationnal excellence. Drops are expected and serious investors will see this as a unique buying opportunity. It could go down 90% for all I care, I would buy more shares.

If you are in the market for day trading, get out for a while because at times like this you will mostly get burned unless you really know what you are doing.

If you are in the long run, did your research, you shouldn’t sweat at reading all this doomsday material vs. any stocks you own. its as bad as bulls saying tesla will reach 5000 by the end of the year.

boboche··on IBM’s Watson Health is sold off in parts
IBM is such a shadow of what it used to be. Hopefully newer health+genomic+ai startups or initiatives at less dinosauresques companies will make the next leap happen in our lifetime.
boboche··on LineageOS
Using it on my note 3. Little Buggy. I need to perform adb commands to fix delayed sms and non working gps in google maps when I apply an update. You look in the forums, its supposely fixed. Other than that its rock solid and I can still use an almost decade old phone like its 2022. Still waiting for the next equivalent in terms of hardware build and future-proof features. Back in the days the note 3 had much bigger ram (3gb) and 4k video. So now I will switch when I see 8k, 12gb and night photo that doesn’t look like AI dulled crap but actual pixels. Hoping the galaxy 22 ultra will be the one. Note 20 was close.
boboche··on Yesterday, US grounded all planes on the west coast for ten minutes
Anyone else was thinking that it has been a while since we’ve had dramma about NK and, well, regret thinking that now? :).
