bobds··on A 14-year-old could build 1998's Google using her Dad's credit card
I don't see any hostility. The comment was certainly not polite, but I wouldn't say it was unfriendly.
bobds··on Two-color Makerbot released
Don't get a Makerbot. It's not bad but you can do much better. Assuming you are in the US, here are some recommendations:

http://www.makergear.com/

MakerGear makes great printers. Amazing customer support and they even have an IRC channel on Freenode where you can interact with the chief maker.

http://www.lulzbot.com/en/86-assembled-lulzbot-prusa-mendel-...

Lulzbot is another good option.

I recommend building it yourself. It will be much easier to fix stuff when it breaks if you go that way. You can buy a kit from the above companies, or if you want to source parts from different companies, check out Ebay and Emakershop.com.

bobds··on This is why I don't give you a job
I remember reading a story about a wealthy Australian that went to court regarding his offshore assets. The assets were under a trust that locked him out of making any decisions, automatically triggered when he became a defendant in such a court case.
bobds··on Photographers: Please Stop Using Flash
I think a discrete watermark at the bottom of the photo is fine. It often helps me find the author of a photo randomly reposted somewhere.
bobds··on A startup’s plan to sell solar like cell phones
I wonder why they chose a pay-as-you-go system depending on how much energy they use.

I think this would be much better as a rent-to-own program with a flat monthly fee.

bobds··on My 3 hour weekend project: Fix My Movie Subtitles
I use subtitles most of the time. It helps a lot with strange accents and noisy movies. I can watch most things without subs, but I have to turn up the volume and it can get annoying.

I've used some desktop apps that do the same thing your website does. It was really hit or miss and a lot of work. These days if I can't find matching subs, I either wait or watch without.

Instead of searching a dozen websites manually, I highly recommend SubtitleSeeker. It indexes all major subtitle sites and it lets you drill down by language, release, episode, etc.

Joking aside, I think this might be a good idea.
bobds··on The Recording Industry Likes to Make Me Look Like an Asshole
Think of a bank that CANNOT have an effective vault because there is technology available that allows people to walk through solid matter.

You could outlaw (or make difficult to use, restrict its features) the walk-through-walls technology. Or you could just stop clinging to your old idea of what a bank or a vault is.

bobds··on AdBlock Plus will soon allow "non-intrusive" ads by default
In the age of the internet, you have to grab the viewer's attention in mere seconds. A lot of marketers don't know how to do that without being annoying.
bobds··on Louis CK self-produces, self-publishes content on his webpage
I think it's on AWS. So whatever that buys you on Amazon.

The 2 download limit made me worry about disconnecting or restarting the download. I also can't make my download manager open more than one connection, in case that locks me out of the content I just bought. I think it should be higher, but I understand that he can't give away too much bandwidth without cutting into his profits.

bobds··on Louis CK self-produces, self-publishes content on his webpage
I've enjoyed much of Louis CK's content without a chance to put some money in his pocket. So I've bought this.

$5 feels like a good price point. I don't think I would have paid $20, especially if I knew that he would only be getting a small fraction of that. Bonus points for making it a 1.2 GB h264 encode. I hope this works out great for Louis and makes other people want to try it.

bobds··on Flash 0-day exploit
The thing I like about NoScript is that you can set it to block everything, even on trusted sites. You have to click the placeholder to make it load, or if there isn't a placeholder (web fonts, hidden flash embeds) you have to look at the Blocked menu.
bobds··on With 750K Paid Users, Evernote Brings In $18 Million A Year
I'd say if you need 400 people to work on just Evernote, you must be doing something wrong.
bobds··on Poll: Do you use an adblocker?
First I used AdBlock and FlashBlock.

Then I used AdBlock and NoScript.

Then I stopped using AdBlock. What a shock that was. NoScript would still catch the nasty stuff and block those talking Flash ads, but it was much less noticeable.

I don't use an adblocker now because it makes me feel out of touch with the reality of the regular user. I've been reconsidering lately, due to the proliferation of web crapware like Facebook like and Tweet buttons.

Ideally, I'd like something that blocks the incessant tracking of my web usage, uses aggressive caching and placeholders to boost performance but still lets me see the web as the regular users see it.

bobds··on Wordless: stop writing Wordpress themes like it's 1998.
I've dived in the Wordpress codebase a few times, I think it wouldn't be very hard to rewrite major parts. However, I don't think you can fix much without breaking tons of plugins, themes and 3rd party tools that integrate with Wordpress.

And if you are going to break the plugin ecosystem, might as well use Habari, which is much nicer: http://habariproject.org/en/

Too bad all the available plugins fit in a single page: http://wiki.habariproject.org/en/Available_Plugins

bobds··on How to create a biased coin and prove it with math
Easy way to check if you are hellbanned:

Visit the .org website and you won't be logged in.

http://news.ycombinator.org/submitted?id=YOUR_USERNAME_HERE

If all your latest comments are grey, shed a tear for the time you've wasted.

bobds··on I know the websites you visited
You can also use the same method (or similar) to check if a user is logged-in in any 3d party websites.
bobds··on Kendo UI is out of beta
How does the dual licensing work exactly?

Can't we just use the GPLv3 version on any commercial (or personal) website? As long as I'm not redistributing commercial software with Kendo included, I am within the rights GPL grants me, right?

bobds··on 1,000 workers at Apple’s keyboard suppler in Shenzhen walk out in protest
Their regular hours ar 7-11:30 and 1-5. The 6-12 shift is added as overtime.
bobds··on Why loading third party scripts async is not good enough
If a script is supposed to run when the DOM is ready but external scripts/stylesheets/etc are still being loaded, it should not attach itself to the load event. The load event is supposed to run when the page has fully loaded. By the way, IE9 now supports DOMContentLoaded and there are hacks to simulate it in earlier IE versions.

Here is a demonstration: http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/HTML5/DOMContentLoaded/Def...

bobds··on Why loading third party scripts async is not good enough
I am not sure what this accomplishes, other than making the stats look better in their monitoring tool. They pretty much seem to admit this:

"Conclusion: the loading, parsing and executing of the async third party scripts are quite often very slow and this messes up our End User performance stats in New Relic."

Delaying the dynamic insertion of scripts until after the onload event, doesn't change anything. All the external crap will still be loaded. It might even make the external assets load slower.

Another solution would be to choose a monitoring tool that distinguishes between DOMContentLoaded (or the equivalent in non-Gecko browsers) and the regular onload event.

bobds··on Neutrino experiment affirms faster-than-light claim

bobds··on The Movie Set That Ate Itself
Interesting story and well-written article. Thinking about the massive amount of footage this project has generated, I'm hoping they've spent the money to store all of it. I would love an interactive movie or a full-on video game (anyone remember the Tex Murphy series?) based on this.
bobds··on How Can Anyone Still Hate Bill Gates?
I was referring to the fear, not the actual products. If Google entering your market doesn't scare you, you are either a fool or lucky to be in a defensible position.
bobds··on How Can Anyone Still Hate Bill Gates?
"I think kids nowadays never knew the old days of computing where the fear was that Microsoft would do a product similar to yours, not quite as good, but sell it at 1/5 the price."

We now have Google entering your market and offering a better product for free.
