bobchadwick··on The Golden Age of Cordless Power Tools
That adapter sounds amazing. I love the Kreg rails, but never thought of the potential for using it with a router. Are you using it with a trim router?
bobchadwick··on Tesla sold only one car in Korea in January
Anecdotal, but I was at a Korean school in the States this past weekend and I have never seen a higher concentration of Teslas than I saw in the parking lot. And there were significantly more Teslas than Kia or Hyundais. So at least in this particular parking lot of this particular school, Koreans/Korean-Americans, seemed to really like Teslas.
bobchadwick··on Show HN: Daily price tracking for Trader Joe's
Looks like they're just straight up links, and not referral links. Pretty sure nobody is earning a commission when someone clicks them.
bobchadwick··on Homemade Pasta. Now Is the Time (2021)
Are you referring to this extruder?

https://www.kitchenaid.com/countertop-appliances/stand-mixer...

That one's meant for all-semolina pasta. Just get the semolina wet enough to form into a ball and send it through. It's best to let it dry completely so you can come close to replicating store-bought pasta and cook it al dente.

bobchadwick··on Today's architects can learn from a 19th century's lost ventilation system
Can someone smarter than me figure out if this is more efficient than mechanical ventilation using a HRV/ERV? I looked at the paper the article references, but I didn't understand the comparisons between various ventilation approaches.

That's the resolution offered for downloads in the free tier. Downloading a higher resolution image would have cost one credit.

bobchadwick··on 2023: Slint in Review
For a second I thought there was a new album that had flown under my radar, and I wondered why a review of it had been shared on HN.
bobchadwick··on How the first gen iPod was reverse engineered to run Rockbox
Awesome story. I absolutely loved using Rockbox on my iRiver H320. I think I still have it kicking around somewhere.
bobchadwick··on iMessage, explained
My late-2013 MacBook Pro recently gave up the ghost. I'd used it daily in the ten years it worked. Are there other PC manufacturers who make laptops that are still useable after ten years?
bobchadwick··on 'Safe' alternatives to engineered stone bench tops may not be so safe: study
Down with the rich and all, yes I agree, but don't most people, regardless of their economic status, need some type of bench top (or countertop, as us Yanks call them)? Seems like this is saying that there's no good stone or "stone" alternative.
bobchadwick··on Heat pumps can't take the cold? Nordics debunk the myth
It's an air-air ducted system. I live in the North East US, so winters are generally cold, with a few days around 0F/-17C. During heating season we keep it at 67F/19C.
bobchadwick··on Heat pumps can't take the cold? Nordics debunk the myth
If you happen to have an ecobee thermostat, https://beestat.io/ is an amazing tool for figuring out how your system performs.
bobchadwick··on Heat pumps can't take the cold? Nordics debunk the myth
What type of heat pump do you have? I have a ducted split system with a HSPF of 9.5, and I'm actually pretty disappointed with how it performs. In our new-ish, better-than-average insulated house, we've had some insane electrical bills over the last couple winters compared to the gas bills we had in previous years (prior to renovating).

Sometimes I wonder if the installer didn't really know what he was doing.

bobchadwick··on Thurston Moore Revisits His Sonic Youth
The SLC Olympics? I saw Modest Mouse play at what was apparently the Ice Village (had to Google it). If I remember correctly, it was a weird and not great show.
bobchadwick··on Tell HN: 3G sunsetting is remotely killing every Subaru Outback battery
I never got confirmation that it was related to 3G sunsetting, but I had this issue when I stopped driving my 2017 Outback regularly at the beginning of the pandemic. The first trip to the dealership resulted in a "software update" that didn't seem to do anything. On the next visit, with photos I'd taken of my voltmeter showing parasitic drain, they replaced the DCM. I think they charged around $800 for that and a new battery since the original was toast from too many total discharges.

I reached out to Subaru of America and as a one-time "goodwill gesture," they refunded me for the cost of the DCM.

bobchadwick··on It's easy to screw up on breaking news but you have to admit when you do
You do realize that the linked article is actually a daily newsletter, right? That's the explanation for the mixing of unrelated news stories.
bobchadwick··on The MP3mobile (1998)
Nostalgia bomb here, too! I think this page had to have served as the inspiration for my car MP3 player, even though I don't actually recognize anymore.

Mine was basically a motherboard crammed under the driver's seat of my Ford Festiva, which loaded an MP3 player on boot (can't remember which one unfortunately). I had it set to shuffle my collection, and I'd use the arrow keys on a full sized keyboard to skip tracks. It was powered by an inverter plugged into the cigarette lighter, and to solve some noise issues, I had broken guitar string grounding the motherboard to the seat's mounting hardware.

I have great memories of driving around and listening to bands like Pavement and Smog, which served as my intro to the wonderful world of '90s indie rock. (I'm sure I pirated my entire collection at the time, but over the years I think I've made up for it by buying their albums and seeing them live.)

bobchadwick··on Important types of pizza in America
I have a Blackstone propane-fueled oven[1] that gives off major A380 vibes (it's really ugly), but it puts out some of the best pizza I eat on a regular basis. It's amazing that with just a few simple ingredients, and lots and lot of fire, I'm able to make this stuff at home.

> E: Embrace LaTeX

How does a hiring manager know that a resume was created using LaTex? I downloaded the author's PDF resume and it pretty much looked like any other PDF.

bobchadwick··on IKEA Redesigns Its Bestsellers
This gets to the heart of the argument Christopher Schwarz makes in his book, The Anarchist's Design Book [1], which is that it's nearly impossible for people who aren't rich to buy high quality furniture that will last a lifetime. An alternative is to build it yourself. The Anarchist's Design book presents relatively simple plans for building high quality furniture without requiring a ton of experience or tools.

bobchadwick··on Hypertext Emacs: You may not need org-mode
Vim user here. Is this functionality not widely known in the Emacs world? In Vim's normal mode, gf will do the same thing and I'm under the impression it's a pretty widely used command.
bobchadwick··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
If you're looking to do speed oven stuff (use the heating elements and the microwave to cook the same dish), don't get a Bosch. I have the Bosch 800 speed oven and while it's convenient to have a single appliance that acts as an oven and microwave, you can only use the speed oven for pre-programmed dishes, of which I think there are eight seemingly random ones.

bobchadwick··on Device wraps around hot surfaces, turns wasted heat to electricity
These devices actually require a similar amount of water to be moving through the drain pipe/heat exchanger and the cold water line that's refilling the water heater. So they're really only effective during showers.
