bnchdrff··on Flightradar24 – how it works
If you aren't trying to send MLAT data to more than one server, it isn't an issue. You can do MLAT to, say, adsbexchange, and non-MLAT to flightradar24.
bnchdrff··on Bias in the ER
Why did they replace instances of "fi" with the ligature "fi"?

Maybe they can more easily check for other sites cutting/pasting their work?

bnchdrff··on Stealth Infrastructure
Local law enforcement organizations do buy cell interception technology, regularly: http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/09/meet-the-machines...

Seeing as companies like Harris build equipment for both running and spying on cell networks, it may make sense for them to offer a tower-mounted system...

bnchdrff··on Selling Bitcoin / Litecoin on eBay, an eBay Live Help Transcript
This reminds me of my highschool friend's "white envelope" eBay ticket scalping business: buy sports tickets and then sell them as free items inside very expensive white envelopes :)
bnchdrff··on Xfinity WiFi Home Hotspot FAQs
Taking a page from FON, it seems.

I'm curious how they do traffic shaping for the second network - does it happen in router or upstream?

bnchdrff··on Sukey - A tool for non-violent demonstrations
The tutorial ( http://sukey.org/tutorial ) does a better job of explaining things.

It's a tool to aggregate location/safety statuses submitted by many people in the same protest.

I'm interested in how the site verifies reports. The purpose of this app is very similar to Ushahidi, which has some basic vetting tools for editors/organizers.

In the tutorial, it just says something like "sukey will check your report and broadcast it" -- how will this look if thousands of people submit reports at once?

bnchdrff··on There is a Horse in the Apple Store
way off topic, but i can't resist:

> soon Cox College of Nursing and Health Sciences, where Rose was attending nursing school, refused Richard access, too. Stories started appearing about Rose and her monkey in the newspaper and on TV. “Suddenly,” she told me, “everyone knew I had a mental disorder.”

a monkey on one's back! idiom origin revealed!

bnchdrff··on Hacker Uses XSS and Google Street View Data to Determine Physical Location
This will take forever, and also make the user's browser unresponsive.

for(var c=0;i<255;i++) { for (var d=0;j<255;j++) { document.write('<iframe height="1" width="1" src="http://192.168. + c + '.' + d + '" id="' + i + '.' + j + '" name="' + c + '.' + d + '"></iframe>'); } }

<iframe> portscans, wow.

For a massively-deployed hack like Samy's, it makes plenty of sense to just check the small handful of major-brand wifi routers.

bnchdrff··on Hacker Spoofs Cell Phone Tower to Intercept Calls
in WEP's case, your AP would receive an auth response encrypted with the keyphrase... you'd have to get quite a few of these to deduce the password, in general. people find it easier to just sniff traffic and deduce the key from all the traffic generated from someone downloading crap.

i don't think this is at all realistic with wpa.

you could just set up an open network with an equivalent essid, but that's nothing new is it? :)

bnchdrff··on A Cell Tower of Your Very Own
Do you know if this was the case specifically with the magicjack device?

An average press clipping from mid-january: "The company said its device is legal, arguing the spectrum licenses of GSM carriers such as AT&T Mobility and T-Mobile USA do not extend into the home." ( http://www.fiercewireless.com/ceslive/story/magicjack-using-... )

It's an interesting tack to take, and I'm very curious about whether the stalled product launch was due to regulation/legal issues, or if magicjack abandoned it for another reason.

bnchdrff··on A Cell Tower of Your Very Own
What's going on with magic jack's femtocell device? It was getting hyped this past January... based on the PR, it's a femtocell that can hijack nearby GSM phones and bridge them to magicjack's VOIP network. seemed bizarre.
bnchdrff··on 1Gbps Symmetrical Home Broadband for $26 per mth (in Hong Kong)
Guess I'll stick with mesh networks and the barely-palatable porridge that SBC and Comcast are willing to give Detroit. We need some stimulus money up here.

bnchdrff··on 1Gbps Symmetrical Home Broadband for $26 per mth (in Hong Kong)
I'm sick of waiting for this in the U.S. How much is it to rent a microtrencher and wire up my neighborhood with fiber and then lease a university/municipal network uplink?
bnchdrff··on TuneGlue music relationship mapping
this was produced quite a while ago (2008ish), but i didn't see it anywhere on this site --- have there been any comparable systems produced recently?

also, it's missing some functionality. c'est dommage!
