bmsleight_··on Count Binface receives over a quarter of votes in Clacton by-election
>It's Clacton, farage chose it for a reason. It's full of retirees and Brexit voters

I used to live in that constituency. The 'great' thing about the first past the post system is you get a MP representative of that constituency. I dont like it, but Farage increased the votes he received.

However, it can be a shrinking island. People laughing at him and Count Binface, may put some of the floating voters across the country off him.

>The UK has no constitutional method to remove a PM. I not sure this is correct, a vote of confidence in Parliament. Will bring down the government. Hence the PM.

The power of having a parliamentary system. Combined with the power of 77,462 residents of Makerfield.

bmsleight_··on Self Driving Car Insurance
Yep - the way to get adoption, whilst the bar is too high for self-driving cars, the bar should be safer than the average person. An old greying socialist - saying that capitalism drive the right outcomes. Same with low-carbon, insurance will help with climate change mitigation.

I hacked together a HDMI e-ink monitor https://barwap.com/projects/okmonitor/

I wanted an e-ink screen I could just plug-in. Versatile, big and cheap. Connection is via a VGA or HDMI. Works like an appliance. All automated. Wireless.

Specifications: 1024x768, 6fps, lag: ~1.2s, Connection: VGA or HDMI Specifications Single Screen: 1024x768, 5fps, lag: ~1.2s, Connection: VGA or HDMI

>privilege of having pre-school aged children, that's my opinion,

Look at salary sacrifice. This give you the option of buying childcare vouchers before tax. So taking you below the 100,000. Otherwise pay more into pension and drop below the 100,000 threshold.

Not tax advice, not financial advice...

bmsleight_··on Meta torrented & seeded 81.7 TB dataset containing copyrighted data
So if I torrented and seeded, I would be doing it for my own entertainment, not commercially. I expect big copy-write holders to come after myself. If Meta does it - I guess they have better lawyers ?

Could make interesting case law.

bmsleight_··on UK lawmakers vote in support of assisted dying
First reading, there are lots of stage before the bill is passed.

It look like Parliament, via private members bill working at its best.

Lots of debate, lots of people listening to the debate and then voting.

bmsleight_··on Call to shut down Bristol schools’ use of app to ‘monitor’ pupils and families
>There is no denying though that if it helps teachers in safeguarding children that is a good thing.

The problem is the variability of quality of teachers. I seen and been involved, both as a parent and governor with Safeguarding leads. There has been wonderful, caring and talented teachers. I am not convinced the excellent teachers need more data - they know the kids and the families very well and can draw on years of experience and support.

There has been also teachers, which have out-dated views and prejudices. This tool in the wrong hand makes matters far worse. This feels like a tool put together with people with outdated views. Like teenage parents are an indicator of a need for safe-guarding or being out of work is a correlation for safe-guiding. This clear prejudices being born-out.

bmsleight_··on Call to shut down Bristol schools’ use of app to ‘monitor’ pupils and families
Bloody hell - until I looked at the digram, I did no realise - this is pure profiling. What has benefit data got to do with a child at risk. As per Housing - this is profile of people because they live on the 'wrong' estate.

"Accessing Out of Work benefits" is saying the child may be at risk. "Teenage Parent" is used as an indicator.

bmsleight_··on Amsterdam bans cruise ships
>Precisely. Tourists are like locusts.

Ok - so how to I go on holiday and not be a locust ? What is the solution no holidays, no travel ?

I live in London and its can be fun trying to get a real work meeting near Houses of Parliament as 'locusts' are all around. However - quid pro quo

>And that's before you get into drug tourism, which Amsterdam has a lot of as well. Not sure the tourism came before the changes to local drug enforcement.

>CityBeautiful has an insightful video on this happening in Venice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SClC9TtQlco

Good video - thanks.

>area becomes dominated by tourism

Good point - make me thinks. How to a be a better customer and stop cruise ports becoming over dominating. Give-up cruising ? Be more selective of which ports.

South-west England is becoming like this (I travelled by sleeper train) and feel like tourists dominate locals. So dont like going there.

Do ethical holiday exist ?

bmsleight_··on Amsterdam bans cruise ships
>that's 55,000 people each day, which is a huge number. Cruise ship has around 4,000 (for a mega ship). So that 10 ships a day. Even Southampton struggle with 5 at a max.

https://cruisedig.com/ports/amsterdam-holland/arrivals

Suggests much less than 55,000 people each day. More like 3,000

bmsleight_··on Amsterdam bans cruise ships
>I think the amount of pollution per passenger is really disproportionately high for cruise ships

Cruise ships are not perfect. I love to take the sleeper train everywhere. Perfect is the enemy of good. Air travel is bad. Carbon footprints is a hard one, try to minimise impact. I think nudging the industry into electric ships and using shore-side power is better.

>Public transport is usually run at a loss Maybe - look I don't want to go anywhere which do not want the ship to visit, however local officials (democratically elected) keep building facilities for ship to visit.

>Same for public museums, I never bulk at a price - charge me a tourist rate - or use tricks so local can pay less. Put the price of the gift ship. But for example the Gender museum in Aarhus you not going to get a better take on local thinking without a physical visit.

bmsleight_··on Amsterdam bans cruise ships
I feel this if you have economically well off, you want (me) the tourist to get off your lawn. However if you want some growth and jobs, my dollars/pounds are good. Tricky balance. I live in London, sometimes I can be grumpy with tourists but heck everyone needs holiday.
bmsleight_··on Amsterdam bans cruise ships
As one of these tourists, who arrived back today form a European cruise, am I struggling to understand the issue (too close to my heart?).

We do need more regulation to force ship to use better fuel and more on-shore energy. More like France to ban short air trips.

By the way - I visit a museum at many places. Not sure what is meant by consuming the city. If you arrive by boat, you must use public transport (or good old feet) to get around. I understand that it is a a surge in demand, but I am putting money in to the local economy. I do not use international chain (except Ikea in Sweden - meat balls). Local worker in local shops.

Rotterdam is a nicer city to visit by cruise ship that Amsterdam. Apart from the Van Gogh museum.
