blymphony··on How video games inspire great UX (2019)
Refreshing take on exploring the "delight" aspect of UX with lots of nuance as well. I read too many comments on here that seem a little a too spartan in their perspective on good UX, but it feels silly to be spartan on a topic that is so, so far from being solved.
blymphony··on California moves to exempt Linux from its age-verification law after backlash
I'm as a big of a horror movie fan as you can find, and I'm completely dumbfounded by the jump scares marketing is allowed to show in trailers nowadays. IMO (coming from someone who is basically unaffected by jump scares), they've gotten more shocking in the past couple years.
blymphony··on How We Broke Top AI Agent Benchmarks: And What Comes Next
But it's odd that these characteristics are the same across models from different labs. I find it hard to believe that researchers across competing companies are coordinating on something like that.

What are other memorable tag lines from them?

Not a startup, but a winddown (wind down)

Warning that this links to illustrations of bugs. That sort of thing makes me jump out of my seat

Sounds like a fancy name for a hiring freeze
blymphony··on Choose your status game wisely
I'm surprised people in this thread are so opposed to trying to gain status. It took me too long to realize, but status, like money, is just a tool at your disposal in society.

You can be too obsessed with status, just like you can be too obsessed with money, and use them for the "wrong" reasons.

But there are things money lets you do that you couldn't do otherwise, like buying a home for your family or bootstrapping a company.

For status, it's the same. Going to X school gives you an easier chance of getting into X company. Knowing X amount of people gives you more opportunities to meet other well-connected people, allowing you to gain more diversified interactions and/or spread your own influence. Having a trustworthy reputation gives people a reason to give you a minute of their time, and sometimes that first impression is all you need to start a relationship or get funding for your company.

Finally, there are things that status gives you that all the money in the world won't.

blymphony··on How to Drop Out (2004)
Definitely, agree. And before someone argues with the expected rebuttal, I think there’s a difference between chasing happiness and rationally acting upon your wants.

In the US at least, “the pursuit of happiness” is such a fundamental concept, people really aren’t challenged to question it.

blymphony··on Using const/let instead of var can make JavaScript code run 10× slower in Webkit
Isn't it a good habit to store the length of the array regardless of browser implementation? Technically, accessing a variable is simply faster than a property access on an object, and this wouldn't be a case of premature optimization either--just sound coding practice.
blymphony··on AMD Announces Ryzen “Zen 3” and Radeon “RDNA2” Presentations for October
It's not out of the question to save the best part of a presentation for last.

I also map my Caps Lock to Control, but don't forget that Ctrl + [ is the equivalent of Escape in vi/vim. It's a chord, but it ends up being much more convenient for me since the keys are both comfortably around the home row keys.
blymphony··on Open Food Facts
Maybe not as comprehensive, but https://cronometer.com/ goes to lengths to break down foods by amino acids (super helpful for protein tracking and weightlifting) and micronutrients
blymphony··on Covid-19 is now officially a pandemic, WHO says
As an Asian American, let's not try to speak on behalf of a minority of 18+ million.

Especially to downplay a possibly valid concern of an individual of your supposed group

blymphony··on No CS Degree – Interviews with self-taught developers
That is true, since the commenter never specified. I work for the U.S. government.
blymphony··on No CS Degree – Interviews with self-taught developers
Not even government jobs are out of reach for you. I work as a federal employee without any college degree doing web development with React/Node/AWS.
blymphony··on Ask HN: How to stop feeling depressed about whether you will be successful?
If you want more information than can be given by a comment from a friendly stranger, I’d suggest reading “How to Be an Imperfectionist” by Stephen Guise. Although I’d assume that most of the advice in this book is obvious to most people, for a “perfectionist” like me, it helped me to unravel my illogical views of success and personal expectations that I had built over the course of my life.
blymphony··on Ask HN: What Are Your New Years Resolutions or 2018 Goals?
That's a clever layout you have going on there.
blymphony··on Vim after 15 Years
I wrote a plugin [1] that highlights the first occurrences of characters from your cursor, to make f/F/t/T/;/, easier to use.

blymphony··on To Master Vim, Use It Like Language
I consider myself at least an intermediate user of Vim, and I'm glad that you mentioned the "f" motion (along with its cousins "t" and ";"). I don't think these keys get enough exposure among beginner Vim users (they aren't mentioned in vimtutor), but they allow you to quickly and efficiently move across files and do things like "ct(" (change text up to first left parentheses), which is super useful for changing function names.

Shameless plug: I wrote a plugin (https://github.com/unblevable/quick-scope) that facilitates the use of "f" and family that even beginners can take advantage of.

blymphony··on Spritz – read 500 words per minute without any training
Why wouldn't they just implement a stop/start button and a zoom out/in button? If you want to return to a missed word or reread a section, zoom out to see a page and then touch a word.
