bluetidepro··on Costco gold bars are selling out within hours
Huh? That’s not true at all. I use my credit card at Costco all the time.
bluetidepro··on Epic Games is laying off 16% of its staff
I wonder if this is related to the class action that is just now finally going through the submission phase for people: https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2023/03/...
bluetidepro··on DJI Mini 4 Pro
Slightly off topic but it's wild how their online store is almost a direct rip-off of Apple's store. Has this been discussed before?
bluetidepro··on The Frustration Loop
The author mentions that they were basically already doing that by no-indexing the content. Plus, that can end up costing you more money hosting the quarantined content.
bluetidepro··on Hackers can use credit bureaus to dox nearly anyone in America
I wonder how often or how fast it would get back on there once it stops being removed? Maybe with the typical life events that trigger it? Buying a house, new drivers license, etc. etc.
bluetidepro··on Hackers can use credit bureaus to dox nearly anyone in America
I think the concept of "Remove yourself from all major data broker websites for 1 year." is what worries me, like do they just resubmit your info once you stop paying? Do I just have to pay for this until forever? haha Or do you think you could get away with paying for a year, then again in like 5-10 years after you cancel the first year?
bluetidepro··on Hackers can use credit bureaus to dox nearly anyone in America
Has anyone ever used that DeleteMe [1] service the article mentions? It's not very cheap, and I'm wondering the value or if anyone has any first hand 2 cents on using it?

bluetidepro··on Show HN: If you have over 99 tabs in Firefox mobile, you will get an infinity
As someone else said, Chrome does a smiley face. I just always assumed this was because of a UI limitation of space and the UI not working if it had 3 characters. I personally don't mind it. It's not like the tabs go away, if you go to the tab view, they are all still there. It doesn't limit you or anything.
bluetidepro··on Twitter's Recommendation Algorithm
Is your app up to date? I have it on my iPhone, iPad, and an Android device which all have no problem always remembering the "Following" tab selection. As well as desktop/web.
bluetidepro··on Twitter's Recommendation Algorithm
> "Today, the For You timeline consists of 50% In-Network Tweets and 50% Out-of-Network Tweets on average, though this may vary from user to user." I have spent significant effort creating a network and there you go choosing to ignore my efforts by putting in 50% of crap-I-don't-want-to-see. That is why I despise your algorithm.

This is just one feed (the "For You" recommendations feed), they also have the "following" feed tab next to it that is 100% your network (want you want), and it remembers your selection when you change between them (they fixed that a few months ago), so really this is kind of a pointless thing to despise for that reason. It's just an option you can 100% avoid if you don't want to see it.

In fact, Twitter is probably one of the only few left in the large social media space that actually gives you an 100% following network feed (minus maybe ads) in chronological order that REMEMBERS your selection (Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok don't). Which makes this even more silly to say. Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok do all have in-network exclusive chronological order feeds, BUT they are extremely hard to find, or don't remember your selection to them.

Hate of Twitter is easy to spoon out, but at least complain about things that aren't already solved for you.

bluetidepro··on Epic Games to pay $245M for tricking users into making unwanted charges
You're missing the point. The point being there is plenty of use cases that are not fraudulent ones.
bluetidepro··on Epic Games to pay $245M for tricking users into making unwanted charges
You could be right, but at least it start to set some sort of tone to this practice, even if it's not the final nail in the coffin for ending it.
bluetidepro··on Epic Games to pay $245M for tricking users into making unwanted charges
Yes and no. Sometimes it's more grey than that in services like Uber or Doordash where it could be at the fault of one bad apple and not the company at a whole. Or as others said, sometimes you are at the mercy of losing a massive library of content if you get blacklisted like on Steam or Amazon, for example.
bluetidepro··on Epic Games to pay $245M for tricking users into making unwanted charges
I take it you have never tried to use the support system of many of these services? Yeah, you may sometimes get a good rep that will actually help you and refund you. More often times than not you are forced to jump through massive hoops, auto replies, no help, etc. to the point that you have to do a chargeback. Also, chargebacks are not always a guarantee, VISA (or whoever) does their own investigation to make sure you're in the right, so you would only likely go that route when you're confident that the service is in the wrong.
bluetidepro··on Epic Games to pay $245M for tricking users into making unwanted charges
> Additionally, the order bars Epic from blocking consumers from accessing their accounts for disputing unauthorized charges.

This could be bigger than people realize. This is very common in many tech companies like Uber/Doordash/Sony/etc. where if you do a chargeback, you often get blacklisted on their service. It would be amazing if this starts to end this practice, and you can actually have authority to get your money back from your credit card and not be penalized by the service for it when they refuse to actually help.

bluetidepro··on Ask HN: Is Hacker News slow for anyone else?
Yes, it's slow and timing out for me (getting "We're having some trouble serving your request. Sorry!" message). Reddit is also currently down with "Our CDN was unable to reach our servers." Wonder if it's a CDN that they both use that is stalling them out?

bluetidepro··on Explanation of the Domino's Pizza tracker
> Seems unlikely that each step is actually updated by the workers themselves. I’d put money on an algorithm. The button or tablet they’d have to use would to signify completion would just get loaded with schmutz. Plus they’d be likely to forget to update during peak hours. A foot pedal might work.

Obviously Twitter is not the best for long form, but did you scroll through the replies from the first tweet that she added? She literally explains how it works, the options workers have, etc. No need to speculate haha

bluetidepro··on NPM repository flooded with 15,000 phishing packages
Slightly off topic, but it's so odd/annoying to me that they used a GIANT TikTok logo image as the header photo for this article. Then the only ref to TikTok after is:

> A large number of corrupted packages use names related to game cheats, free resources, and social media platforms, such as "free-tiktok-followers" and "free-xbox-codes," to entice users to click the links and direct them to multiple well-designed phishing webpages.

So just because the spammers are using the TikTok brand/name in their spam (also mentioned is "xbox" but they didn't use the Microsoft logo), they used THAT as the image? Not the NPM logo or something much more relevant? I know it's minor, but that rubs me the wrong way as very "sus" and clickbait for when the article is used on social sharing sites and they most likely pick that image as the article open graph image. You also know it's most likely for clickbait because the avg person is much more likely to click some link with the TikTok logo and "phishing" in the title, vs some NPM logo that they may not even know.

bluetidepro··on I created an eBay account and bought an item, today I got indefinitely suspended
Why would that even matter? If eBay approved/listed the item he was buying from another user, it should be fine to buy. This wouldn't make it HIS fault? If anything, it would suspend the person listing the item.
bluetidepro··on Apple is convinced my dog is stalking me
> The disable isn't a disable of notifications. It disables the airtag from reporting its status as an anti-stalking measure. So it wouldn't work for anyone.

OHHHH okay, that makes more sense. That was the part of the puzzle that was confusing me. Thanks!

bluetidepro··on Apple is convinced my dog is stalking me
> My AirTags keep notifying me that I've left stuff behind and that it was last seen at my home address.

After the 2nd or 3rd time this happened to me, the notification had an option to turn on like a "okay location" or however they phrased it. This stops that from happening when you lave it at a known/home address. That worked for me. You may have missed it?

bluetidepro··on Apple is convinced my dog is stalking me
> The problem is that the AirTag is registered to my partner’s device. That means that Apple doesn’t recognize my iPhone in connection with the AirTag, seeing the unknown tracker as a threat to my safety.

> The notification provides an option to disable the AirTag, which would be helpful to stop an unwanted third-party from knowing your location. That feature renders the AirTag useless, though, so it would no longer be able to track my dog if she did get out.

I'm confused. That doesn't make it useless? If you disable the notification on HIS phone, his partner would still get notifications on HER phone as it's link to her account? I'm confused what he means. And if it's not even linked to his account to begin with, how is he even able to track it besides the stalking notification? Something doesn't add up to me.
