bluehorseray··on Meta’s metaverse hype leads to real-world backlash
I can't help but think that they would gain the kind of traction they're looking for if they dedicated most of their resources to developing a VR, first person shooter game like COD or Fortnite.

You need to give your customers something they actually want to do with that headset on.

Forget about gesture recognition, facial tracking, even the joysticks for now.

bluehorseray··on [dead]
Not taking any sides here, but here's an article I read a few months ago before knowing anything about this situation. Certainly offers another perspective:

bluehorseray··on Evaluation of TikTok vs. Instagram Reels
I think Meta really screwed up by not creating a stand-alone Reels app and instead trying to integrate it with Instagram. As someone who doesn't really like Meta as a company, I would admittedly be interested in trying out a totally new video-centric app released by them.

But instead all they did was make instagram a little worse. I mean they already had instagram videos, shoe-horning a fifth tab at the bottom isn't what people wanted. Seems like a really corporate, safe way of trying to compete.

bluehorseray··on Pope Francis instructs Vatican entities to move all funds Vatican bank by Sep 30
I imagine he has some sort of financial advisor advising him on these decisions. It would be funny if one of the Pope's responsibilities was to manage billions of dollars.
bluehorseray··on Image generation ethics: Will you be an AI vegan?
To a certain extent I agree, but another argument would be that at the end of the day, computers are deterministic (even on the incredibly large scale of these image generators, given parameters x, it will produce y).

We're still not sure whether humans are deterministic or not. So you can't really equate the human process of art creation to a computers. Humans may still be pulling from some external inspiration that will never be within the reach of computers (I like to think that's the case).

Do you think these events could be coincidences? If not, do you think someone is coordinating these things? To what end?

Hmmm HR chief of LinkedIn ... interesting
bluehorseray··on As TikTok grows, so does suspicion
Fair. I guess I just don't think TikTok is misleading anyone into thinking once you hit x views, x likes, and x follows, you'll see an appropriate financial return. Maybe I'm wrong though. I figured everyone views (or at least should view) TikTok HQ as a kind of neutral medium, not an employer.
bluehorseray··on As TikTok grows, so does suspicion
Umm people definitely don't consider posting on tiktok "labor" like you're suggesting. a) It's fun, and b) they're getting social status / minor celebrity status. Even if there was no chance of making any money I can guarantee you people would still try to grow a following.

Posting tiktoks =/= working a 9-5 at Microsoft

bluehorseray··on Jupiter CEO Quits $68B Firm to Sit at the Beach and ‘Do Nothing’
I wouldn't go that far haha. This man definitely achieved "FI" well before he became CEO of Jupiter. In any case hats off to him.

(edited "FIRE" to "FI")

bluehorseray··on Misplaced Crypto Schadenfreude
It's not schadenfreude if people on HN criticize crypto when it's hitting ATHs, which we absolutely do...
bluehorseray··on Possible impact of functional active gpcr-autoantibodies in long Covid
Well for a study trying to find biological markers of a condition, I imagine the only way to source people is by self reporting. Because they haven’t found the markers yet…

bluehorseray··on The Great Crypto Grift May Be Unwinding
To be completely honest--and I don't mean to sound mean--that doesn't seem very cool at all to me. That's a lot of words to say that with crypto you can own a token that signifies you're a part of a community. And that's the coolest thing you can think of. The iPhone is much cooler than that, I use it all day. And Steve Jobs didn't talk about it nearly as much before it started being used widely.
bluehorseray··on Bitcoin Is Acting Like Just Another Tech Stock
Have you ever held 24k gold? It's actually beautiful, and I think that's why it's consistently been valued throughout history. Couple that with scarcity and I think it will always be valuable.

bluehorseray··on Bitcoin Is Acting Like Just Another Tech Stock
Proof of work existed long before bitcoin, and I haven't seen any evidence that bitcoin is an important innovation despite it being 13 years old. Send it to zerooo

bluehorseray··on Ask HN: Confused – Whats the best extension after .com?
Not sure if there's more meaning behind the extensions than I'm aware of, but I've always liked ".io". It's clean and short, used by a lot of "tech" websites I've seen.

Or .org lol

bluehorseray··on Scientists Find No Benefit to Time-Restricted Eating
At the very least timed-restricted eating has helped my relationship with food. When I was eating three evenly-spaced meals a day, I was constantly in this pseudo state of kind of hungry, kind of full, but never really very hungry or very full, and always thinking about eating but not eating too much. After doing a pretty easy variation of time restricted eating I literally never think about food other than when I'm eating. I really like the feeling of actual hunger, and then eating when I'm actually hungry. And how much I eat or want to eat just kind of never seems to be a problem.

But beyond that I'm skeptical of the claim there's no benefit, I've felt healthier and my bloodwork has improved, but maybe something else caused that (I wouldn't know what).

bluehorseray··on My take on Elon's offer for Twitter
I don't see how the problems the author describes can't be resolved by putting an end to banning accounts / de-platforming people for posting offensive, albeit legal, content. Which is what I thought Elon said he was going to do.

If neither the left or the right can point to accounts being banned, I think at the very least they may stop complaining about the "censorship" issue.
