blondie9x··on Heat dome causing record breaking heat wave
To some seeing records such as these fall is heartbreaking. It’s agonizing and vexing when you wonder what can you do to help slow down climate change? The reality is we aren’t doing nearly enough to slow it down and the Earth is gradually destabilizing. We see insane cold snaps such as those that impacted Texas this winter, and at the opposite end of the spectrum heat waves unlike anything humans have ever experienced before. The worst part is these will continue to get worse year after year while greenhouse gas emissions rise. Imagine the record high temperatures falling this week and year. In 5 years or 10 years they might seem to be distant memories as we continue to see records broken and the planet becomes less livable.

The worst part of this is Earth is all there is for us. There is no where else to go. We are this tightly interconnected ecosystem where all beings are completely bound to one another. Our home is surrounded by darkness for millions of miles. There is no option B. There won’t be, that’s just the way it is. Mars won’t be option B. Don’t kid yourself. If we don’t right the course on greenhouse gas emissions with urgent changes to limit emissions now, then we will have lost the habitability of Earth. I can envision us having to live inside year round without being able to go outside. Does this feel so much like a remote possibility now? It seems year over year temperate days become more elusive. Fires. Droughts. Extreme weather events. Floods.

The destruction and extinction of entire ecosystems hangs in the balance. The crazy thing is we can stop this. But only with urgent individual and societal actions and sacrifices now to address the climate crisis.

If it's reducing keystrokes. Eventually it might reduce the problem down to no input needed at all.

In that case? Are those who don't control the AI needed? What about when those optimizations can be made by the AI itself also?

blondie9x··on How Do Animals Safely Cross a Highway?
“I want everyone to be super excited about wildlife crossings, but I don’t want people to forget that a wildlife crossing is like a Band-Aid,” said Trisha White, an environmentalist who was integral in moving wildlife crossings from the fringes to the mainstream in the United States. The structures, she emphasized, can only fix a small part of the road’s damage to wildlife habitat.

“The road,” she said, “is like a wound.”

It has already started over last few hundred years. It's called the Holocene extinction or Anthropocene extinction. It is the sixth extinction.
blondie9x··on Chinese paddlefish, one of the world's largest fish, declared extinct
The unbridled enthusiasm of man again pushes us deeper into this 6th mass extinction event, the Holocene extinction https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocene_extinction.

I still remember the Baiji https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baiji or the finless porpoise https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narrow-ridged_finless_porpoise . Can we realistically ever taper down and live more simple minimalistic lives that strike a better balance with our ecosystem?

Moreover does anyone know why the Wikipedia pages do not show the Baiji or Paddlefish animals extinct? Under the EW or EX status?

blondie9x··on World Now Likely to Hit Watershed 1.5 °C Rise in Next 5 Years
Can people please push for 100% renewable crypto mining and chips in the next 1/2 years? There isn’t a lot of time left.

Beyond crypto need to stop all deforestation now and focus on ways to make cities more livable by decreasing or moving homeless and increasing transit and affordability of housing. Cities need to be more livable and comfortable. This will drive down deforestation of suburbs and the extensive fossil fuel use involved in transportation and movement of people outside of denser urban areas.

There isn’t a lot of time left and action needs to be taken urgently.

Fukushima and Chernobyl pics remind me so much why we need to move past the old style nuclear reactors. Those reactors and future plans to build more of them need to be abandoned. The future of nuclear should be small modular reactors with alternatives besides light water reactors. Thorium cycle or Molten salt reactors. That’s the future.

Please can we regulate the carbon use of cryptocurrencies. This is getting out of control and governments are too slow. Bitcoin mining consumes more energy than the entire country of Argentina uses now. I do not want to hate on Bitcoin but climate change is getting out of control and there is little time left to reverse course. Last year with a global pandemic CO2 still rose by near record amounts. Bitcoin mining does have something to do with this. There is a connection. Please be open to the idea that we need to regulate the energy that Proof of Work mining cryptocurrencies use. I don't want to stop crypto. I just want us to use types that require less energy to mine. The planet is running out of time and this is FACT offsetting lots of progress on reducing emissions. https://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/ccgg/trends/gr.html Please don't downvote because you love crypto. I do too. I just want us to do better at preventing CO2 emissions from rising because of its mining.

blondie9x··on Policy assessments CO2 sustainability of Bitcoin blockchain operation in China
From the article -> "Due to the proximity to manufacturers of specialized hardware and access to cheap electricity, majority of the mining process has been conducted in China as miners in the country account for more than 75% of the Bitcoin network’s hashing power, as shown in Fig. 1. As one of the largest energy consuming countries on the planet, China is a key signatory of the Paris Agreement18,19,20. However, without appropriate interventions and feasible policies, the intensive Bitcoin blockchain operation in China can quickly grow as a threat that could potentially undermine the emission reduction effort taken place in the country."

It needs to be regulated, that’s a fact. Governments are behind the ball on regulating the mining of it. The environmental damage of unbounded mining is offsetting much of climate change progress.
blondie9x··on Japan's cherry blossom 'earliest peak since records began'
So many world records involving the climate have been broken in recent years. Is there still hope left for our planet? I was in the ocean a few months back and the water was calm, the sound of the waves was peaceful. The beach was beautiful. But there was a problem beneath the surface. Plastic everywhere. Pieces of it broken down throughout the water and when I exited the water it was all throughout the sand as well. I walked up the entire beach and plastic was everywhere. Throughout such refined sand. I hit a low that day. Sometimes I lose hope, I'm just not sure we will be able to right our course towards sustainability and minimalism in time to avert climate disaster and this sixth mass extinction in the anthropocence. I just hope one day when I'm old I will not lose the sakura blossom festivals altogether and that posterity will still be able to enjoy the tranquility of a new spring.

blondie9x··on Bitcoin miners in Abkhazia are causing blackouts in remote villages [video]
You are trying to brush off criticism with a red herring. The US military doesn’t secure USD... and we need to have a conversation about energy consumption and Bitcoin. We need to regulate mining for it the same way we regulate other mining on the planet. Physical or digital or still uses energy and we need to have a conversation and look at options. Not just dismiss critics for pointing out the obvious.
