blondie9x··on Solar generates fifth of global electricity on summer solstice midday peak
I wish it was this simple. All energy is still borrowed. Mining and producing and disposing of solar panels is still very energy intensive.

Renewable energy is a piece of what needs to be a much larger effort to fight climate change.

blondie9x··on Priced out of home ownership
I'm not talking about just senior living or senior care places. I'm talking about total independent just 55+ or 62+ senior apartments that have affordable rents available. There are very few of these and waiting lists are usually completely closed off and take 10+ years if your name is called at all.
blondie9x··on Priced out of home ownership
The problem is pretty easy to fix. 50-70% of homes (Depends on Area) are owned by people over 58-70 (Baby Boomers). They don't have good senior apartment/living options. Make more senior housing and provide incentives for them to sell their homes. There are so few available affordable senior apartment options. It's really saddening. Most places have 5-10 year waiting lists, if the waiting list is open at all.

Fixing senior living options will create inventory in the market and give seniors better choices with an active community.

blondie9x··on DuckDuckGo was down
Is it just me or is search terribly broken on the internet.

It’s Google or Bing and Bing imposters.

Why aren’t there more broad search options? Search was better when we had page rank algorithms. It’s gotten over condensed into 2 companies.

blondie9x··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
The most dangerous monopoly Apple maintains is iMessage. Everyone hates to be the non-blue message recipient.

The reason customers are loyal to Apple iPhones is simple. iMessage and iCloud.

It is definitely anti-competitive the way iMessage and iCloud function to lock out other cloud backup alternatives and to make subordinate non-iPhone recipients.

Like the lightning cable to USB-C migration. There should be 1 message platform for phones that builds upon SMS.

blondie9x··on Ex-Google engineer charged with stealing trade secrets
Of course he did. How could he not know taken documents and giving to a competing company wasn’t a violation?

Need more locks on this kind of stuff.

Should all uploads and content transmissions out of network require an approval by default?

Difficult to say it but it needs to be considered

blondie9x··on Houthi Attack on Ship Led to 'Environmental Disaster,' US Says
I see it more as a statement of fact. But even more, as a tragedy that we destroy each other and our planet in the name of some section of land or border or religious cause.
blondie9x··on Microplastics are everywhere: Is it possible to reduce our exposure?
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9885170/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7068600/

Research is still in the early stages. Obviously funding is poor since the plastics are being created by the oil industry and no one wants to scare the public.

blondie9x··on Microplastics are everywhere: Is it possible to reduce our exposure?
The impact on the endocrine system is very serious. Testosterone and estrogen levels have been proven to be impacted by microplastics.

Human sexuality and reproduction is definitely being influenced by consumption of microplastics. Sexual differentiation and sex determination in human development are impacted.

As sexual hormonal levels become increasingly out of balance, what happens to children and adults?

blondie9x··on The Plastic Chemicals Hiding in Your Food
The risk to the endocrine system and hormonal levels is very concerning.
blondie9x··on Tech's DEI backlash is here
Implementing new bias initiatives makes the cycle never ending, for all time. We must focus on equality now to prevent preferential bias going forward.
blondie9x··on Tech's DEI backlash is here
DEI is truly division and exclusion. It is a euphemism for new types of discrimination. Hopefully Supreme Court rules on this soon as they did on affirmative action.

You cannot fix the world by implementing new types of bias and discrimination, even if it is being wrapped up and sold as diversity and inclusion or however else it is pitched. This should be unconstitutional and against the Equal Protection Clause in the Constitution period.

We cannot and should not ever judge a book by its cover. We must always focus on merit, ability, and equality first. However, I do think society needs to provide social nets to help people get free education that are not able to afford it if the education has promise to lead to great career opportunities.

From the film Lincoln, 'Euclid's first common notion is this: "Things which are equal to the same thing are equal to each other." That's a rule of mathematical reasoning. It's true because it works; has done and will always will do. In his book, Euclid says this is "self-evident." You see, there it is, even in that two-thousand year old book of mechanical law: it is a self-evident truth of things which are equal to the same thing, are equal to each other. We begin with equality. That's the origin, isn't it? That balance-that's fairness, that's justice.'

We are all homo sapiens and need to be treated fairly, equally. No one should be given structural preferential bias on a public or private level. We have fought so hard for equality in this country, DEI is a step backwards in equality by sanctioning new biases.

blondie9x··on Exploitive, illegal photos of children found in the data that trains some AI
We need to dissect training data more. Too much push to enhance models without ensuring the input data is free from issues.
blondie9x··on AI and Mass Spying
Real question you have to ask yourself. Is AI spying and AI law enforcement Minority Report in real life?
blondie9x··on U.S. agency declares 21 species now extinct
I wish I could interview Musk. Give him a hard interview for once. Going on Lex Fridman is like going for an interview with an adoring fanboy.

Just want to see someone interview him who is as smart as him.

Anyway sad to see this report. Reason I bring up Musk is he is so self righteous about focus on rockets and EVs. What's the point of a rocket reaching Mars if there is no Earth left to supply it?

We are in the Holocene Extinction and the best minds are ignoring the problem and driving the dagger in deeper. That's sad.

blondie9x··on Animated AI

blondie9x··on Cratering motor fuel sales in Norway show the death spiral that can end oil
Oil is still being used for plastic products. It will still be mined and drilled or fracked until all uses of oil diminish.
blondie9x··on Snowbanks are set to get whiter – offsetting climate change's effects
Please please add "some of" to your title. It will not offset much. It will be a fraction of a degree C.
blondie9x··on Extracting Hacker News book recommendations with the ChatGPT API
Why are there so many issues with the list? Descartes didn't write Meditations. Some links are dead or point to wrong item.
blondie9x··on Investigating a teen’s death on an ebike and the Rad brand’s safety
No it isn't. Riding a bike to a nearby station doesn't require lithium mining and is better for your heart and body. Where did you come up with most efficient transit option? By what metric?
blondie9x··on Investigating a teen’s death on an ebike and the Rad brand’s safety
It's sad because if better transit options existed I doubt these e-bikes would have ever proliferated.

Sad also how slow and ineffective government is, from the perspective of housing and transit, and more over from failure to regulate danger to the public well.

blondie9x··on Iconic tree at Hadrian's Wall's 'Sycamore Gap' has been 'felled'
Doesn’t need to be cameras. Tighter restrictions might be more practical during off hours.
blondie9x··on Iconic tree at Hadrian's Wall's 'Sycamore Gap' has been 'felled'
This is a crime. A terrible senseless crime in a time of environmental destruction by mankind. What we need to do is take any seeds of this tree and plant 20-100 of its potential children in the area. We need to grind this tree up and make food and strengthen the soil for the future trees in the site.

Potentially we then need more cameras or tighter restrictions when it comes to visiting the site during off hours.

When a tree is felled it will take decades or centuries for a baby tree to offset the same amount of carbon per year. Therefore we need to make sure hundreds are planted with compost for the trees.

Can anyone with connections to site discuss with them or share ideas with the community?

blondie9x··on Ask HN: I’m an FCC Commissioner proposing regulation of IoT security updates
What about requiring proactive exploit identification to be paid out and then patched by manufacturers for reasonable life of equipment?

The reasonable life of the equipment should be based on equipment type. It should also be clearly described and communicated to consumers how much support the manufacturer will provide the product over the life of the product and into future.

Manufactures should have to estimate how long a product can last and will receive updates based on their testing and in reasonable conditions of use. And what environment it was tested in.

Also, based on the Samsung recent leaks where many accounts were related to IOT devices we know the security risk is not just at the device level but in a broader sense the company itself.

How a company manages and deletes / archives data safely is a paramount issue that also flows into securing IOT devices better as well.

blondie9x··on AI demand is already shrinking
Something about searching and parsing through content myself just feels so satisfying. Being able to dive deep and find parts that are meaningful for the context I'm driving towards just makes the whole experience more enjoyable then having an AI tell me what meaning is based on training.

blondie9x··on Flash mobs invade luxury L.A. retailers with brute force, overwhelming numbers
The company that allows the live streams should do the moderation. Not government.

If a video stream is going to move forward it needs to be approved and vetted for crime or privacy abuse.
