blastro··on Stephen Fry – AI: A Means to an End or a Means to Our End?
That's fair.

Not trying to be pedantic, but:

> We don't simulate a bird's bones and muscles

Isn't really true, is it?

We simulate the bones with an airframe, and we simulate the muscles with a prop/jet. The wings are similarly simulated.

Every time the stock market shits itself, the large brokerages seem to "go down"

> share the same general morals of the rest of the population

funds don't share those morals

blastro··on Fake job interviews are securities fraud
The idea that retail buying/selling pressure has any effect on market price is a very old fashioned idea.

My best friend in grade school was a bit of a deviant and we definitely experimented with these things. Very powerful!
blastro··on Show HN: Every mountain, building and tree shadow mapped for any date and time
Wow! This is an awesome observation
blastro··on Dymaxion Car
He provided one very important thing (at least to me): an optimistic view of the future and our ability to support ourselves.
blastro··on The Rise of the Forever Renter Class

Reminds me of the Busch-Gass Gambit in chess - something so new and mind boggling that it absolutely destroys the best chess engines in the world. Discovered through computer analysis. Insane to watch this opening played well.
blastro··on Anger is eliminated with the disposal of a paper written because of provocation
There's no way for you to know
blastro··on Ice to treat soft-tissue injuries contraindicated by creator of protocol
They do sometimes - like when they're trying to gain strength. At other times, recovery is more important than growing stronger (like during a tournament).
blastro··on Ice to treat soft-tissue injuries contraindicated by creator of protocol
Mostly a way to reduce inflammation, ice bath isn't exactly a "painless" experience
blastro··on Ice to treat soft-tissue injuries contraindicated by creator of protocol
Surprising that this fact is being often overlooked in this thread. If you're in a multi-day golf tournament for example, an ice bath for immediate recovery and lack of hypertrophy is exactly what you want.
blastro··on Ice to treat soft-tissue injuries contraindicated by creator of protocol
I find I need two different modes:

- hypertrophy to actually gain strength and muscle (ie. longer recovery time)

- maximum recovery to heal from a strenuous exercise and be ready for more the next day (ie. shortest possible recovery time)

In the second scenario, I don't care about gaining strength at all, and the recovery is the only important aspect.

blastro··on Anger is eliminated with the disposal of a paper written because of provocation
Yes, forgiveness is really for the offended, not the offender. It can be a heavy weight to carry.
blastro··on Avoid blundering: 80% of a winning strategy
In golf, reducing bogies helps more than increasing birdies, so same idea there
blastro··on Ugly Avatar
Yes, you are correct!
blastro··on Ugly Avatar
Ah, you're right. It's been a while since I've seen the show.
blastro··on Are We Living in the Roaring 20s?
Fair points, no doubt.
blastro··on Are We Living in the Roaring 20s?
Malthus never factored ephemeralization into his calculations. We can produce more with less than ever before. Buckminister Fuller addresses this head on in his magnum opus "Critical Path"

Looks like the animation style of the cartoon "Home Movies" - seriously underrated show. Jon H Benjamin is the voice of the main character.

blastro··on How we engineer feedback at Figma with eng crits
Was excited to learn something here and did not. Seems like a very normal technical review process. My team uses discovery trees for the same goal.
blastro··on Home Assistant: Three years later
My story: Spent weeks / months setting up a fairly sophisticated home automation set up running on a Mac Mini. Worked great for 3-4 years, occasionally I would have to re-pair all of the Z-Wave devices after a power outage, but nothing too serious. Then one day the Mac Mini died and I thought about the days/weeks of work to replace it and just decided not too. In the end, it didn't provide a ton of value beyond the shiny UI and charting abilities. It was fun but I don't think I would do it again, unless I was retired or something.
