Of course with Brexit bare in mind that the majority of the populace did not vote for it. Many of us are very pro-EU and believe in European social democracy.
I’m a Frontend Dev - I don’t miss the ‘glory days’ of IE6 and Safari for Windows one bit. Accessibility, performance, adaptive designs, state management and rich UIs are far more interesting and challenging.
My kids are 12 and 13 - wfh was is getting very old for me, especially during the school holidays when I’m constantly in ‘dad mode’. Don’t get me wrong - I love them with all my soul but sometimes I really want a break.
At least where I live (France but not Paris) all the decently paid jobs in my field all seem to be fully remote. I’d love to go back to partial RTTO but it’s simply not financially viable given the paycut and commute costs.
My Dad’s got early stage dementia and Facebook is an absolute nightmare. The apps infested with AI slop and the algorithm seems to fill his feed with stuff designed to get him worked up (currently badly behaved cyclists even though he no longer drives).
Yes, but just as a ruler. It belonged to my Dad who was an avionics engineer starting back in the 1950s. He worked all over the world seeing out the end of the British Empire. It smells of old cigarettes and is very worn and chipped.
My monitor (a Samsung ultrawide thing) has an option to reduce contrast (I think it’s called ‘eye saver mode’) that makes a massive difference. I don’t use for gaming but for work it’s made a massive difference to my comfort.
> McDonalds pays nearly $20 an hour these days, if it keeps the lights on, don't be above it.
I was between jobs several years ago and my startup failed - I ended up washing up at a restaurant to be able to continue feeding my family. At the time it was humiliating to be in my late 30s scrubbing pots and pans for the minimum wage but looking back it’s probably one of the periods of my life I’m most proud of: Putting pride aside to do what’s required to be a father and a provider.
Which country are you relocating to ? Certain ones such as France don’t allow ‘digital nomads’ - there are workarounds but it inevitably involves paying taxes and social charges. Working cross borders can also be difficult- I’m English but have French residency but cannot work for a non-French (and possibly Ireland) without getting a blue card or getting my EU citizenship back which was stripped from me against my will…
I can rent cars and vans from the supermarket 200m from me - the problem is the faff of waiting for a member of staff, the pre inspection, the post inspection, the cleaning, refuelling, the scanning of my drivers license, the payment of the deposit and fee - if it was as simple as turning up with my phone, scanning something and driving off I wouldn’t need a personal car and I doubt many would either.
Homes? Nah they’re ‘investments’. I live in Brittany, France and new buyers, low earners etc are completely priced out of the market. My partner is a nurse and at her hospital they are closing wards because nurses, cleaners, healthcare assistants and even junior doctors can’t find, let alone afford accommodation.
…because the Tories are the ones being manipulated. A PM earns less than 200k£, a Minister even less and an MP even less - they’re incredibly cheap to ‘buy’.
On a more serious note I use MS OneDrive family account and iCloud - I figure if either of those companies goes under there are bigger things to worry about. I print a lot of my photos so I’ve always got hard copies of the kids when they were growing up - everything else is unimportant or replaceable.
None of what you mention is important to me (an iPhone / Apple ecosystem user) and no, I am not ignorant to Apples forced limitations . If I actually wanted the same as you I'd buy an android and use linux as my OS, but I just want to forget that my devices exist - I want them to melt away into the background like a dishwasher or a sofa and let me get on with living my life.
As does most of the educated populations of rEurope and India etc - I’m an English dev working in the EU and the fact that I speak English is of no real advantage over my peers.
It’s obligatory in France. Until recently the french ID was comically large which led to men having to carry massive wallets which gave rise to the ubiquitous “man bag”.
I’m English and it was a balls up that cost the company six or maybe seven figures. I actually left on good terms (at least with the team) but they needed a sacrificial lamb for the board.
I’ve been fired from a job - it’s glaring obvious from my CV - I’m just honest, tell then how I learnt from my error and how I believe it makes me a better dev having reeeealy messed up that one time. If a company doesn’t want to hire me after for that reason it’s not a company I’d want to work for anyway.
