blakblakarak··on Ask HN: Which book has had the most meaningful contribution in your life?
Probably not as profound as others here but ‘Allen Carr’s easy way to stop smoking’ - I quit 15 years ago and because the pub was a massive trigger for me I spent the evenings learning how to program which led to my career, saved enough money to go travelling around Asia for six months and discovered cycling.
blakblakarak··on UK: No-fault evictions to be banned in reform of rental sector
It's horrific in the UK for those that don't own - I've got friends (a couple - he's a teacher, she's a nurse) who in any reasonable society should be able to easily afford to own a decent house, but finding themselves stuck in the rental trap are unable to make plans six months ahead, let alone think about starting a family because they never know if / when they might be evicted. This is in a costal area 1.5 hours from London and for the past two years they've found themsleves evicted in the Spring as the landlord can make more money AirBNBing over the summer.

I too learnt webdev with Jeffrey back in the jQuery days of 2011 - I subscribed to laracasts at the start of the year (primarly to evaluate Laravael for work) and was delighted to see that he runs the site - he's like the Bob Ross of webdev.
blakblakarak··on People who use Notion to plan their whole lives
We tried it where I work and had the same result - we've since gone back to boring old Redmine. I do think it's great for personal use though - I use for everything from shopping lists to dream journals (don't judge me ;) ) to 5 year plans.
blakblakarak··on Companies to publish salary ranges in job adverts under new EU rules
I didn't realise that was the case for the public sector - my wife's a nurse and hers is provided.
blakblakarak··on Framework Laptop 16
Personally I use an Xbox Series X and just stream my games to my phone or macbook air (using https://github.com/unknownskl/xbox-xcloud-client/releases) - performance is great.

In France you get 'top up' insurance called a mutuelle (the state pays the first 70% - 80% of most healthcare costs - chronic conditions are paied 100% by the state). A basic mutuelle is obligatory at all jobs, but many will provide a decent one (that includes glasses, advanced dental work, hearing aids etc) as a benefit.
blakblakarak··on Dell to layoff 6,650 employees as demand for PCs plummets
We get issued Dells at work - I've been there five years and had to send back 4 machines for various issues ranging from persistent BSODs, intermitten freezes to GPU problems. I currently have an I7 / 64gb XPS workstation and it's noticably slower than my personal MBA M1....
blakblakarak··on Startup is fining employees for contacting colleagues on vacation
That sounds similar to the UK system in that working days are mon - fri and weekend bankholidays roll over into the week (eg If Christmas Day is on a Sunday, Monday is a bank holiday). Compared to France where I work where Saturday can be counted as a work day (even if it isn't usually worked) and bankholidays that fall during the weekend aren't rolled over. In 2022 in the UK you could have taken 3 days and been off 25 Dec - 02 Jan whereas in France it would have required taking a full 7 days off.
blakblakarak··on Portugal’s digital nomad bubble
I'm an English immgrant in France - lots of my compatriots complain about French bureaucracy but in all honesty it's far more efficient and accessible than it is in the UK.
blakblakarak··on Z-library founders arrested in Argentina
No doubt they'll be chucked in a supermax prison in the arse-end of nowhere for fifty years.
blakblakarak··on W3.css – A minimal alternative to Bootstrap
This is a good resource for beginner too: https://tympanus.net/codrops/css_reference/
blakblakarak··on Ask HN: What is the cheapest laptop I can buy for development
Where are you based ?
blakblakarak··on Ask HN: M1 MacBook Pro/Air users, how is it going?
MBA 16gb / 256ssd

- It has pretty much ruined other PCs for me - it runs rings around my work provided Dell XPS / I7/ 32gb - and it has completely replaced my tablet (the instant on feature / battery life and size rendering the tablet obsolete)

- I wish I'd got the 512gb model

- I only use docker for postgres but I've had no problems

- I usually run Webstorm, Figma, countless Chrome tabs Spotify hooked up to a Samsung Ultrawide 5120 x 1440 and it doesn't skip a bit.

blakblakarak··on Ask HN: Looking for feedback on our website (freelance platform))
Why does a website need a loader? There is no excuse with all the optomisation tools available.

> Top 1% of best freelancers > Each specalist goes throwgh rigorous screening process before starting the work > on any important project, and only 1% of all candidates are able to pass it.

I hope they have better attention to detail than you.

blakblakarak··on Angular without SSR is faster than Next.js with SSR
It's simpler once you know it. I bounce between Angular and React and whilst it's true that React is easier to get started, changes in the API (hooks, class vs functional componentns) and ecosystem (eg forms, UI Kits, state management, architecture etc) mean that I find it's a constant learning curve, whereas aside from a few minor changes Angular has been the same since V2.
blakblakarak··on Ask HN: Burnt-out, directionless but want to turn it around
Why not combine them ? - personally mountain biking + photography. My brother does boat restoration + sailing etc.
blakblakarak··on Ask HN: What do you pay for your internet connection, and where do you live?
France 29EUR a month (which includes TV, unlimited national and international phone calls to most countries) - ~700mbs down / ~500mbs up.
blakblakarak··on Show HN: Website changes design each time you blink
How can you be sure that all lights don't do this already ?
blakblakarak··on Myths in cycling: wider tires are slower
If you can spin out a 50x11 or similar on the flat you're in a very small minority of cyclists...
blakblakarak··on Myths in cycling: wider tires are slower
My 15 year old Surly Crosscheck is probably my most ridden bike - it was one of the 'first' gravel bikes (they've been making them for 20 years) before they really became a thing. The cantilever brakes are rubbish but that just makes it more fun.
blakblakarak··on Context switching costs more than we give it credit for
There is a Netflix series of the same name by the author that's worth a look - she's an engaging host.
blakblakarak··on Twin – Tailwind with the flexibility of CSS-in-JS
Whatever you do, don't look at the RXJS docs: https://rxjs-dev.firebaseapp.com/
blakblakarak··on Smoking Banana Peels Is the Greatest Drug Hoax of All Time
A friend succesfully managed (once) to get it to work when we were 12. First we lightly grilled and boiled the bananas and mixed it with some reseve rolling tobacco that his dad kept above a kitchen cabinet in an old biscuit tin. We smoked one joint and then collapsed onto the sofa. It never worked again regardless of how many times we tried.

A few years later his dad invited us to smoke a joint with him while his wife was away - and let us into his secret stash of premix, squestered in an old biscuit tin, stashed above a kitchen cabinet...

blakblakarak··on Wooden bikes
Carbon bikes are made for stiffness and ride quality - you can make equally light bikes with Alu / Ti.

I doubt the risk is any worse than with carbon fiber. http://www.bustedcarbon.com/
