blacksmithgu··on Poll: How are you doing currently?
I'm on a similar boat with general malaise, breathing issues, and insomnia. Has been going on for about 2 years and has destroyed my quality of life and ability to do any kind of physical activity. Doctors have no idea and have essentially just told me to live with it.

It seems like being caught in limbo - being just well enough to work and subsist but too ill to go out and really do things. I just keep hoping one day it will just got away.

blacksmithgu··on Obsidian Dataview: Turn Obsidian Vault into a database you can query from
Whoa, very weird to see my plugin hit HN! Dataview was initially borne as "Notion tables for Obsidian", but quickly became a way to do flexible data annotation + querying after I realized how powerful metadata can be. Viewing your notes as "text + data that can easily be accessed" can really alter how you think about note taking and knowledge management.

There is a fair bit left to do for the plugin (export to raw Markdown, section-level metadata), but I hope you find it useful!

blacksmithgu··on Java record pattern matching in JDK 19
I love seeing modern language features coming to Java! Sadly, I suspect it will be at least a decade before I see Java 19 used anywhere I work...
blacksmithgu··on Why do you waste so much time on the internet?
Chronic media consumption is not always based on avoidance. It is very easy to open social media during genuine downtime "for 5 minutes" only for an hour to pass before you know it. That is just bad self control due to dopamine addiction.
blacksmithgu··on A Difficult Diagnosis
Treatment for non-obvious disease is awful and slow. I feel mysteriously ill with severe breathing problems two years ago that was not COVID related and my doctors all scratched their heads. My last one just eventually shrugged and told me to live with it.

I can't afford a personal doctor who actually cares, so I've had to manually look up possible conditions and request tests and hope for useful results. My empathy goes out to anyone who has struggled with chronic illness.

blacksmithgu··on Kotlin Asynchronous Framework, Ktor 2.0, Released
I've used Ktor for a few toy projects, and it's coroutine-based concurrency model is actually very cool. You can write very readable synchronous-looking code with just coroutines and message passing - highly recommend messing around with it (or other coroutine/actor system models).
blacksmithgu··on The Brilliance of “nil” in Objective-C
Even optionals with bad 'is null / get' assessors are better than nulls, because they come with nullsafe operators like map / flatMap and the 'get' call usually always errors or panics on failure.
blacksmithgu··on Ask HN: Is all code crap?
Any actively maintained codebase always devolves into crap. Scopes change, technology shifts, bugs patched; code quality monotonically declines as you trend away from the assumptions the program was written with.

No amount of rigor and discipline can stop this trend. If you truly care about high code quality, design your programs to be small and modular, and redesign them when assumptions change instead of repeatedly patching them.

Rewriting is often unsuccessful as well, though. So practically speaking: best get used to the smell.

blacksmithgu··on What a better Rust would look like
This article effectively read as "I want to write Go instead of Rust." Which is fine... just go write more Go instead of lamenting over aesthetic language design choices.
blacksmithgu··on Your time is the furthest thing from free (reimagining the way we look at FOMO)
While I generally support anything that advocates for less social media addiction, it's worth noting that self-improvement is an exhausting affair which can lead to its own brand of FOMO. There's no shame in occasional indolence or "wasting time"; just spend it on something marginally higher quality than endless MMO grinds or scrolling through the 700th page of Reddit.
