blackbrokkoli··on Gmail Services Global Outage
I fail to see your point here, we're looking at the situation of someone stuck on Gmail. Nobody is suggesting that people should give up their homebrew domain system in favor of fastmail.
blackbrokkoli··on DeepMind – StarCraft II Demonstration
It's not about an AI in the sci-fi sense though. It is about an actual real world AI playing the game StarCraft II.
blackbrokkoli··on Why are glasses so expensive? The eyewear industry prefers to keep that blurry
Title correction: Why are glasses so expensive in the US? The American eyewear industry prefers to keep that blurry.

Please stop using the US as the "that's how it is"-standard.

In Germany, you pay a very reasonable (from my layman perspective) price for the lenses, maybe about 40$ plus another 30$ if you want to have non-reflective glasses or product from big name producers and stuff like that. Like every fashion product, frames start at a few bucks up to whatever you want to pay. Measurements, bending the frame are included in the service. None of this involves health insurance, as far as I know.

blackbrokkoli··on Road Tripping Around Europe in a Tesla Is Less Fun Than You’d Think
Holy shit! Did this have consequences?
blackbrokkoli··on Pathfinding for Tower Defense
Try Unity3D! The Asset store has more art than you will ever need, especially if graphical consistency is no priority
blackbrokkoli··on Great Wall Motor unveils $9k electric urban car with nearly 200-mile range
Ignoring whether this is a great engineering accomplishment or not:

> In addition, the big data cloud that is created as the result of the information collected from the ORA app, the ORA shopping site and the Tmall e-shop opens the way to the development of multiple scenarios for offline sales

I don't see that much discussion about this trend, but I consider it a threat to security as well as just plain bad UX. All these UX gimmicks and "features" I already loathe in web apps, I really don't want them in my car. Pay to unlock, tracking, remote control, AI. Sure, it's comfort, but what is the price? At this point I prefer a 90's car where you just turn the key and it works or don't.

Is this just "get-off-my-lawn" thinking?

blackbrokkoli··on State of web browsers in 2018
"fastest" doesn't mean "fast", "friendliest" doesn't mean "friendly".

Suffocating progress with monopoly abuse is not a good platform for claiming to have the "best" browser...

blackbrokkoli··on Ask HN: Why don't big softwares use App Store on Mac OS X?
The site you linked uses tweets with certain hashtags related to publishing in the app store as "data". This is highly inaccurate, not statistically profound, biased, easily manipulated and not conformable.

(That's why you're downvoted, probably)

blackbrokkoli··on Aether – Free, privacy-sensitive public communities
How to prevent that tho? Everything seems to be at the risk of either the first or the second...
blackbrokkoli··on 3D printers have ‘fingerprints,’ which could help trace guns, counterfeit goods
The difference is that you can get a 3D-printer without doing anything shady whatsoever, as opposed to contacting a black market. This makes no difference if you're a drug cartel, but for lone-wolf shooters it does.
blackbrokkoli··on New York Times app autoplays video ads on articles even with paid subscription
You're just getting downvoted because of your phrasing. You sound like this isn't a problem because people can use adBlock. I think most people who downvote actually agree that his is an efficient counter measure.
blackbrokkoli··on New York Times app autoplays video ads on articles even with paid subscription
The problem with your argument is that you unify the creator of the content and the entity placing the ad.

Supporting people via Patreon or PayPal? Donating to software? Participating in open source you use? Watching an ad embedded, vetted and filmed by the video creator (popular example: end of CinemaSins)? Buy silly merch which is actually thoughtfull? Sure thing! I always did that und will always do that!

Getting a screaming Shooter Ad from EA in the middle of my "Better sleep meditation"? Giving Sony money because I want to listen to Bethooven and they copyright-trolled that? Playing endless cat and mouse with the dark patterns added every other week to let me click on ads? Explaining my little sister what a dildo is because YouTube is busy demonitizing everyone but inappropriate scam ads? FUCK NO.

blackbrokkoli··on [dead]
I'm not sure what the article is trying to convey. The example is absurd. Maybe the decline of the article was part of the global conspiracy of the patriarchy. Or maybe the person who declined it just had a bad day. Or maybe the website where the sources needed were published just had horrible UX and the two editors who cared just gave up. Same with the "breastfeeding" example. No causality proven.

The rest of the article is just incoherent numbers and elevator talks of Wikipedia. What is the point of all this? Of course the Wiki mirrors the real world, that's its very purpose, right? I'm not sure what the suggestion is here. Over-represent the achievements of minorities to generate a pseudo-equality is a really bad "solution". I'm pretty sure a big player like Wikipedia can contribute to equality but I don't see any meaningful example for that in the article...

blackbrokkoli··on 5000 financial services jobs to move from Britain after brexit
Would you mind naming a few of reasons that are valid in your book?
blackbrokkoli··on Uniqlo cut 90% of staff at one warehouse by replacing them with robots
But your argument is solely build upon fancy words.

Here, let me pull an absurd scenarios out of nowhere too: Two of the now jobless workers are destined to become the next Beethoven and Musk, only able to follow their dreams being relieved of their crushing day job.

It is just absurd to diminish the positive effects of automation just because the negative effects combined with the (US-only) horrible state of state provided safety nets makes for better sob stories.

blackbrokkoli··on Windows 10 October 2018 Update no longer deletes your data
Linux one is just untrue.

If you're not technical, just go with Mint. Looks like Windows 7, behaves like Windows 7, doesn't break. You don't have to leave GUI environments once, neither in installation nor in usage. Doesn't break. Gives you the opportunity to optimize your workflow if you want to.

Off topic, but thanks for pointing that cool HN feature out
blackbrokkoli··on The Best Article Ever Written About Bragging
Please keep the discussion on topic. You start with an example from the article but then just ramble about massively over-simplified issues and socialist strawmans, adding in some up-to-date buzz like amazon workers. This is not constructive.
blackbrokkoli··on Elon Musk Settles SEC Fraud Charges
Well arguably it would be even worse than.

I think it's save to say that the relative amount of money lost is more important than the absolute money lost for most people

blackbrokkoli··on The woman who accidentally ticked: 'I am a terrorist'
This is an excellent example of one of the three pillars of classic test theory (the basis of which such forms should be based), validity:

Is this parameter measuring what I want to measure?

This is an examplariously hilarious case of absolutely not. Saved.

blackbrokkoli··on Coinbase Wants to Be Too Big to Fail
This is just deliberately "well-technically" misinformation. Here, let me buy a steam game:

Store Page.

Yes, buy for myself.

Yes, accept.

Yes, PayPal Oneclick, accept.

Yes, thanks.

Conformation via email on phone, game starts downloading.

Not even 20 seconds. Yeah, maybe the mills of the old COBOL databases of my local bank who is probably already calling it a day this time on a friday might grind a few days before there is an 'actual' transaction or whatever. Point is, me representing the average day-to-day money user, this system, backed by reciproc trust is completely sufficient for the VAST majority of transaction the VAST majority of people will ever do. I'm not saying cryptocurrency is useless. Au contraire, I think it has great potential.

But claiming that it's easier, safer, faster, cheaper or less likely to fuck you over at this very point in time for the Otto-Normal customer is just plain wrong.

blackbrokkoli··on Ask HN: Better tools for the software requirements / scoping phase?
How do they have opposite meaning? Can I use "by" to declare A and B as opposites in such a context? (Trying to learn, I never heard the usage of "by" like this)
blackbrokkoli··on Modifications to Google Chromium for removing Google integration
This is not wrong, but you're missing the reciprocity.

Devs don't optimize for Chrome because they're evil, they do it because a vast majority of users use Chrome and they know that. So both parties can do their part.

blackbrokkoli··on How to be alone: the difference between loneliness and solitude
I'm really surprised of the thread here, considering nothing is faster calling out people overstepping the bounds of their credibility than HackerNews, usually.

The author wildly mixes statistic sources with inspirational tinder-quotes, mentions research about that abnormal whale, than boils it down to grandma-psychology and does a general bad job separating "my opinion", "read somewhere" and "credible source".

In a similar fashion, comments here confusing anecdotes with science and vice versa. Of course loneliness is compared to network-cryptography a wider experienced phenomenon and can be discussed on a personal level if you declare that, but I find it very hard to extract anything of value here...

blackbrokkoli··on Element – A Desktop UI Toolkit for Web
Yeah the whole landing page is focused on "this is why our product is the best" but I still don't get what their product is. Probably just means that I'm not the target, but still...
blackbrokkoli··on Microsoft intercepting Firefox, Chrome installation on Windows 10 Insider build
Well they did learn to sell a better image convincing even the ever-cynical HackerNews apparently, looking at the threads of last months.
blackbrokkoli··on Microsoft intercepting Firefox, Chrome installation on Windows 10 Insider build
Remember getting downvoted on Hackernews for pointing out that you don't trust their new image of "openness" and what not a month ago? People praising the new line of the new CEO and analysing that there would be nothing to fear from Microsoft anymore (github contret) - That didn't age too well...
blackbrokkoli··on Pinterest Is a Unicorn, It Just Doesn’t Act Like One
As others mention here, I would say we shouldn't overdo the praise.

I can't really comment on the financial/entrepeneur side of Pinterest, but on the user side:

* It's a walled garden, closed source, force signup, the UX is bad even if aren't a user (dominating Google Image Search taking you too pictures you can't click), it has lot's of dark patterns

* It heavily suggests signing up with Facebook or Google, making all the critic on privacy of those platforms also theirs

* It has all the features for the mob-mentality, abuse and so on (Like system, sharing, popularity based rankings)

There aren't as many of these problems visible because of the content(no sensitive fotos, banking information or much politics) but that's not because of their great buiseness model but the theme of the platform...

blackbrokkoli··on Tell HN: Using Gmail? You will be force logged into Chrome
Well they didn't tell people that they're not either...
blackbrokkoli··on Tell HN: Google requiring phone number to log into Chromebook
Yeah, maybe.

But it's Google. I could name at least 12 datapoints to check wether it's still the same user it was for 10 years on top of my head. Starting with "still using the same device" going to probably things like "typing style", given how sophisticated their AI is.

There is really no excuse for Google's ADD and implementing half-assed features and stopping to support them 2 months later...
