blackboxxx··on Is the Party Over at Google+?
Google+ is too late to win the social media throne. It's boring and only superficially different. The only way Google+ can survive and not shrivel up like Wave is to stop trying to be Facebook 2. Be different Google. Don't be boring.
blackboxxx··on Ask HN: Is Google's +1 button one of the signal for Google Search?
I'm a professional SEO but I haven't done a lot of testing with +1. I may never. I think it's tacky and easily gamed.

That said, it's my understanding +1 is not a signal yet, but will be (albeit of little weight). Not worth worrying about.

blackboxxx··on Is a web app earning $100/month a failure?
Depends on how much time and mental cpu cycles you spend making that $100. If it's only a few minutes to a couple of hours a month, it's a keeper.

Assuming that's the case, scale your app so it brings in more (it's already proven itself) ~or~ put it on the backburner as a "passive income generator" and go hard on something that will bring in real money.

blackboxxx··on How writing creates value
I remember reading this on Hacker News about a year ago. Too lazy to look it up though.
blackboxxx··on Bing Becomes a Distraction for Microsoft
Bing isn't different enough to gain mindshare, and it's search results can't compete with Google (or even Blekko's IMO).

You know what would be disruptive? A search engine for physical spaces. When I'm scouring my apartment for a matching sock or my keys, I'd do a search and the missing item would be located.

I don't know how, but someone should do this.

EDIT: No, I'm not high. Just weird.

blackboxxx··on Amy Winehouse found dead, aged 27
Hard to believe your comment was downvoted. It's true, people like me knew more about her "trouble-making antics" than her music. That's wrong. She deserves better.

Sad day. Rest in Peace Amy.

blackboxxx··on Our security auditor is an idiot. How do I give him the information he wants?
This is a case of social engineering, not of a security auditor, but of the poster. The poster wants to know an easy way to collect public and private SSH keys and fake 6 months of inbound traffic. There is no auditor.

Maybe the poster is writing a book on cracking systems? Who knows. But it smells like a hoax.

blackboxxx··on [dead]
I have a few. In social media and a service based startup. 'Nuff said. They all make money, but my living expenses, taxes, child support are more.
blackboxxx··on [dead]
It's funny. I sympathise with laid off unskilled workers too, but they don't do any worse than most tech savvy startup entrepreneurs. Most of us, including me, are broke and in debt.
blackboxxx··on [dead]
Thanks for the chuckle.
blackboxxx··on Alternatives to GoDaddy
Namespro.ca is good, especially for Canadians. I transferred all my domains there from GoDaddy after the elephant killing.
blackboxxx··on Project Noah: A tool to explore, document wildlife.
Big upvote on this one. I'll be using it. Instead of immediately freaking out when we see an insect (and calling an exterminator) perhaps this app will help us appreciate and respect them more?

I'm allowed to dream.

blackboxxx··on Picking the Lock of Google's Search
I've been using Blekko for research in a broad range of topics. Yesterday I searched for French grammar rules and was happy with the results (I actually made a purchase because of it).

I quickly referenced Google but the SERPs were far less interesting and diverse.

EDIT: Ah yes, almost forgot Blekko's SEO/competitive intelligence features. Makes for nice client reports.

blackboxxx··on What Would You Like to See In a Hosted Blog Service
Integrated backup and recovery, with technical support available 24/7 to help get a blog back online.
blackboxxx··on Cobra Effect: Lionfish-style
I don't like the editorial slant on the title kaptain. You're declaring it a bad idea when you likely don't have anywhere near the credentials to make such a call.

Either we continue to eat the same popular fish out of existance, or we can try and eat overpopulated predators like the Lionfish.

It makes sense to try an idea before we condemn it.

blackboxxx··on Picking the Lock of Google's Search
I'm almost hesitant to say this because I don't want spammers jumping all over this like they have Google, but Blekko is the shiznit. Yes, it used to suck, but try it now. Tell me if the search results aren't much higher quality.

Mums the word.

blackboxxx··on Ask HN: How to make sense of death in Rangers game?
Without even looking at your profile I can tell by your remark you still live at home and are no older than 17.

That's not a bad thing. You just need to grow up a little. But for now, go ahead, obsess over needless things.

blackboxxx··on Courtney Love does the math (2000)
After reading both articles I'm left wondering what wacko liberal definition of plagiarism are you going with anyway?
blackboxxx··on Ask HN: How to make sense of death in Rangers game?
In a world with urban sprawl and animal cruelty, depleting natural resources, and families living on the streets, you're going to focus on a stupid freak accident?
blackboxxx··on Ask YC: Why Did Your Company's 20th Employee Join?
Dumb question. Dumb answer.
blackboxxx··on Lessons Learned: The Lean Startup Book is here
"Exploded on impact with the market in spectacular fashion"? Leverage the "awesome psychological powers of branding and the publishing hype cycle"?

I suggest you switch to decaf ;)

blackboxxx··on Startup Therapy: How to deal with feeling like you live a lie?
I am going through what you describe right now.

Here is what I am doing:

- brainwashing myself. I am reading positive books like Peaks and Valleys by Spencer Johnson and The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino. I didn't have the time so I made the time. Everyday.

- I am reaching out to my family members and pushing away from work.

- I am enjoying the sunshine and trying to laugh more. Both are free.

- I have spoken to my accountant and the tax man about dealing with some of my debts. There are other debts I don't know how to deal with, so I don't worry about it.

- I am learning a new language. It's another way to change my thinking. This post explains the idea behind it: http://dreaminespanol.com/spanish-lifehacks/eradicate-bad-me...

If you ever catch yourself hating life or yourself, you must stop. It's a downward spiral and completely toxic. Take corrective action now.

Start your life over again. You can. That's why we have a new day every 24 hours. Start over as many times as you need to to get it right.

blackboxxx··on Why I read Hacker News even though I understand very little of it
I did the exact thing with Slashdot, when I first got on the Internet in '98. And I'd read Linux Journal although much of that was over my head as well.

But slowly you learn, and get to know the stuff, and then it gets boring and so you check out something else you know little about. That's what happens to me.

I think you're on to a good strategy alex.

blackboxxx··on Ask HN: Methods of Self-Discovery
Have you tried Rejection Therapy? http://rejectiontherapy.com
blackboxxx··on Firefox 5 - Completely irrelevant and totally pointless
Good post. It had to be said.
blackboxxx··on Want a public profile for your pets? Check mine.
Perhaps petowners can use this site when animals are lost?

I would explore that angle.

blackboxxx··on Change your mental perspective
Thank you Lance. I needed to read that.
blackboxxx··on More letters to RIM; employees rally alongside anonymous exec
I know a RIM exec personally (and leave it at that) and he mocked my iPhone for several years, calling it "fragile" and a "toy for children".

It's been only in the past month or so that he muttered something about the competition getting tough lately.

It just seems RIM leadership is extremely arrogant and proud. They see the train coming right at them, but are too afraid to make the radical blue ocean product that's required to save them.

blackboxxx··on Ask HN: Can someone please recommend interesting startup/tech documentaries?
Seconded. One of my all-time favorite documentaries.
