blackaspen··on Microsoft Becomes Linux Foundation Platinum Member
Makes me more interested in Azure, actually, on the backend...not working for MSFT.
blackaspen··on Microsoft Becomes Linux Foundation Platinum Member
Ah! Ok, that actually makes a bit more sense... thanks for clarifying! That's actually quite neat then.

Sarcasm? I imagine that they're not emulating the Linux Kernel on Windows... From what I've gathered from job postings and whatnot, their virtualization system is in line with AWS's (Xen) on Linux.

I guess the other thread was the one that became the dupe:

I'm fairly certain all of 2016 is a mass-hallucination. Or something. In all seriousness though, I don't think this is surprising. Visual Studio on macOS is more surprising to me. Azure runs on Linux and that's a really, really big business for Microsoft. And they've also built a Linux Subsystem into Windows. Rock on Microsoft, rock on.

blackaspen··on Microsoft joins the Linux Foundation
Maybe Microsoft will pour a bit of support into WINE?
blackaspen··on Microsoft joins the Linux Foundation
Awesome! Way back when, I was a huge Microsoft fanboy, until Mac OS X came out, then I hated Microsoft...then I used a Windows Phone from day one until just before Microsoft bought Nokia. And I own a Surface. Definitely come full circle.

blackaspen··on AT&T reaches deal to buy Time Warner for more than $80B
I'm not so sure about what our future interactions with Google or AT&T will look like, but I do know Taco Bell will win the forthcoming franchise wars...
blackaspen··on “The Depressed Person” by David Foster Wallace (1998) [pdf]
I can say, for me at least, it's absolutely worth the investment.
blackaspen··on Twitter Is Expected to Field Bids This Week
Your startup has over 300 million users? Operating at scale is functionality that requires a lot more work than a lot of people sometimes realize.
blackaspen··on Ask HN: What happened to Facebook graph search?
Wow...and for _years_ I thought I was in some annoying holdback pool... I had UK-English set just for the readable timestamps.

Just changed to US-English and Graph-esque searches work fine. Thanks!

blackaspen··on Palo Alto mayor pushes for ban on large tech companies taking over downtown
Facebook was also in one of the University Ave buildings for a bit before they moved to Page Mill and ultimately to Menlo Park.
blackaspen··on Palo Alto mayor pushes for ban on large tech companies taking over downtown
I lived in Palo Alto in 2012 and even then, Palantir's building collection seemed a little excessive. I'm mostly happy that they're doing well...but every time I've gone back, it feels less like the already-strange downtown it was and more like a Palantir campus.

I joked with friends then that Palantir's only real business model was buying Palo Alto so they could sell it later.

"I put all my genius into my life; I put only my talent into my works." -- Oscar Wilde.
blackaspen··on 10 Most Coveted Cars That Aren't Made Anymore
It's also worth saying that most of the cars on this list deliberately don't weigh over 3000 pounds and don't have unmaintainable technology components.
blackaspen··on A Denver Suburb Experiments with Free Lyft Rides to Light Rail
I'm surprised Call-N-Ride even gets that much ridership.

I've never run into anyone who has _ever_ used it. I saw a Call-N-Ride bus in my neighborhood driving in circles and it was certainly a strange sight.

This sounds like a good plan. But personally, I'd like to see Bike sharing to get to Light Rail (or in my case 36) as an alternative solution too.

blackaspen··on Confirmed: Walmart buys Jet.com for $3B in cash
Based on how Walmart's eCommerce has failed to grow I think this is a waste of $3B. Hopefully the Jet employees get a nice payday out of it.
blackaspen··on Wal-Mart in Talks to Buy Web Retailer Jet.com for $3B
Walmart would be better off buying $3B of Amazon stock -- eCommerce is not their strong point.
blackaspen··on Wal-Mart in Talks to Buy Web Retailer Jet.com for $3B
I think it's 12Bn of investment in eCommerce, which includes but isn't solely Labs.
blackaspen··on Netflix Billing Migration to AWS – Part III
Amazon Prime (Video) is backing "The Grand Tour" as well as many others -- they're definitely getting into producing original content.
blackaspen··on [dead]
SFO doesn't use TSA, they have a private firm doing security. Not sure about Boston.
blackaspen··on Wal-Mart Plans to Test Grocery Delivery Through Uber, Lyft
King Soopers (Kroger) has it in Colorado, as do a few local ones...That said, I don't know anyone that uses it.
blackaspen··on Twitter Wins NFL Deal to Stream 2016 Thursday Night Football
There's a Periscope AppleTV app.
blackaspen··on Etsy stock has lost 76% of its value in 9 months
Twitter's YoY revenue growth is pretty respectable. I don't think they've 'failed to monetize'. (User growth, now that's a different story...)
blackaspen··on The CIA-backed startup that's taking over Palo Alto
I really wanted one of those when I lived in Palo Alto so I could get the Palantir discount at Philz...
blackaspen··on Pandora to Buy Rdio Assets for $75M, Rdio Files Ch.11, Will Shutter Service
Bummer. I really like(liked?) Rdio. I've been a subscriber for several years -- the UI I find to be pretty good, but their mobile apps are garbage.

So, who wants to write up an Rdio -> Spotify migration tool?

blackaspen··on Sideloading f.lux on iOS with Xcode 7
I'm so insanely happy to see this, even with it's minor shortcomings. f.lux has eliminated all eye-stress for me while computering -- it's been one of the only reasons I've considered jailbreaking my iPhone...until now! Serious thanks to the developers.
blackaspen··on Editing of Pig DNA May Lead to More Organs for People
My thoughts exactly!

Last year I wrote a paper on Oryx and Crake and found a case of using slightly modified pig membranes/ligaments to repair human ones...We're just getting closer to OrganInc.

blackaspen··on Twitter announces layoffs
It's not great, but it's certainly better than something like "We've decided to move forward with a new strategic initiative that will involve a synergistic restructuring of our organizations and in that process it's possible that some people may find themselves seeking opportunities"...
blackaspen··on Atlassian Planning U.S. IPO
Funny -- I find Pivotal to be hands down the best tracking tool I've ever used. You have to conform to it a little more than Jira can conform to you though, but it's not bloated.
