bla3··on Apple is open sourcing Swift Build
I wish swift was built against normal LLVM instead of against Apple's fork of it.
bla3··on Janus Pro 1B running 100% locally in-browser on WebGPU
This needed a 4 GB renderer process and about that much additional memory use in the GPU process for me, in Chrome.
bla3··on Wild – A fast linker for Linux
Isn't the new linked just the default these days? I'm not sure adding that has any effect.
bla3··on A curious case of O(N^2) behavior which should be O(N) (2023)
Except it wasn't improved in this case, if I'm reading the gist correctly. The author didn't like their fix enough to make a pull request.
bla3··on Making memcpy(NULL, NULL, 0) well-defined
It's a big jump from "this behavior annoys me" to "I hate a person".
bla3··on Listen to what gets lost when an MP3 is made (2015)
Note that the original project did more involved processing, as described on https://www.theghostinthemp3.com/theghostinthemp3.html:

"Using the python library headspace, and a reverb model of a small diner, I began to construct a virtual 3-d space. Beginning by fragmenting and scrambling the more transient material, I applied head related transfer functions to simulate the background conversation one might hear in a diner. Tracking the amplitude of the original melody in the verse, I applied a loose amplitude envelope to these signals. Thus, a remnant of the original vocal line comes through in its amplitude contour."

bla3··on Linux Syscall Support
Might be a license thing? The Linux headers are probably GPL like the rest of Linux.
bla3··on The Anvil Text Editor
Vim can do multiple cursors as long as they start on the same column: ff<ctrl-v>jdw
bla3··on Show HN: 2048 turned 10 this year, I built an updated version to celebrate
Still very fun!

I didn't notice anything different from how it was in my memory. That seems like a successful modernization :)

I didn't notice that there were power ups until reading your post.

bla3··on [dead]
This felt a bit familiar to me despite being published today. Turns out it reminded me of https://samkriss.substack.com/p/taylor-swift-does-not-exist by the same author.
bla3··on More annoying macOS 15 Sequoia prompts: Bluetooth
Their "Find My" network relies on many Apple devices having Bluetooth enabled and reporting seen device names to Apple (in some anonymized way), as far as I understand. If that's right, then Apple is interested in people not turning off Bluetooth.
bla3··on Cores That Don't Count [pdf] (2021)
[2021]
bla3··on Rust in Linux Revisited
Ladybird isn't using rust.
bla3··on Hacking with PDF (2022)
Do you know if it's still maintained? I have a bunch of PDFs where images don't show up in Preview. I filed bugs for them, but they're being ignored.
bla3··on CPI for all items rises 2.9%; shelter up
That's intentional, to incentive people investing their money instead of stuffing it in their mattress, where it doesn't help anyone. As long as wages raise as well, it's not a problem. You shouldn't compare prices to prices 100 years ago, but purchasing power 100 years ago to purchasing power now.
bla3··on Google Pixel 9 Pro
It's rare in the US too. Less rare than outside it, but still < 5% market share.
bla3··on Large Enough
I think their desktop app still runs the actual LLM queries remotely.
bla3··on Python grapples with Apple App Store rejections
Oh, thanks for pointing that out, I read "App Store" and thought iOS. The macOS app store is used much less, and doesn't have to be used. If this doesn't affect the iOS app store, I'm surprised Python is making any concessions here.
bla3··on Python grapples with Apple App Store rejections
> The problem at hand is that Apple's macOS App Store is automatically rejecting apps that contain the string "itms-services". That is the URL scheme for apps that want to ask Apple's iTunes Store to install another app

It's sad that there's nothing that people using iOS can do about these hamfisted policies.

bla3··on Writing GUI apps for Windows is painful
The linked post does mention that:

> or distribute object files for recompilation

bla3··on The Byte Order Fiasco (2021)
https://commandcenter.blogspot.com/2012/04/byte-order-fallac... covers that part.
bla3··on Humans began to rapidly accumulate technological knowledge 600k years ago
For what it's worth, I used to be certain that I thought in words too. Then I moved to a different country and used a second language often enough that I sometimes think in it. I then realized that there are periods where I think in neither my native language nor in my second language, even when I'm thinking. YMMV of course.
bla3··on New GitHub Organization for the Swift Project
Does this mean Swift will finally be built on top of public LLVM instead of on top of Apple's fork of it?
bla3··on I learned Vulkan and wrote a small game engine with it
There is a native API too, not just JS. You can link it into your game like any other library.
bla3··on Opening Windows in Linux with sockets, bare hands and 200 lines of C
Does anyone know of an example like this that shows a bitmap, without external libraries?

As far as I know, you have to ask the server for the active bit depth and send bitmap data in a matching way, meaning every client needs to have code to convert to every pixel format under the sun.

Maybe that's not true though, I'm not sure.

bla3··on We were wizards – a foreword to Learning Perl (1993)
That split was terrible and it took over a decade to fully resolve, but it's behind us now.
bla3··on Fractional scales, fonts and hinting
Say your UI had a one "pixel" wide vertical line. At some point, resolution becomes high enough that you need to draw it two device pixels wide. What do you do at scales in-between?

Do apps start drawing their lines wider if the default font size goes up? When? Is it consistent system wide?

bla3··on All my thoughts after 40 hours in the Vision Pro
Is there another way?
bla3··on Google Chrome goes native for Windows on Arm
How many people are there on windows arm? It doesn't seem super popular.

If anything, this looks like Google thinking that that might be changing.

Does anyone know if there are new windows arm products that might make it more popular?

bla3··on X Purges Prominent Journalists, Leftists with No Explanation
I parsed this as (X Purges Prominent Journalists), (Leftists with No Explanation) at first and was pretty confused. If that should happen to anyone else, it's supposed to b (X Purges Prominent Journalists, Leftists) (with No Explanation).
