bksenior··on Yahoo is shutting down about half of its content verticals
I couldnt care less.

It just screams inexperienced teenager that thinks everything adult is stuuuuipd. Just had higher expectations for the discourse, thats all.

bksenior··on Yahoo is shutting down about half of its content verticals
Content that deals with a specific theme or topic. ie. Sports, Business, Stocks..etc
bksenior··on Yahoo is shutting down about half of its content verticals
Would you prefer them say "categories of content on the site that tend to deal with a central topic or theme." Content vertical is a pretty standard term.

These kind of judgemental blanket statements have no place on a site like this, and worse show a lack of experience working in any large company. Please try to be more productive when contributing.

bksenior··on Jet.com Raises $350M, Expects $150M More
This screams Pets.com
bksenior··on Didn’t Homejoy Shut Down?
Dude, you weren't unclear. You literally lied by copying customer testimony to mislead. At least apologize or take some responsibility. Id honestly rather you not say anything than this extremely weak response.
bksenior··on Broke
Youre looking at it from the wrong side. NCCAF is one of the largest making money leagues in the world and certainly the largest money making "amateur league" the reluctance is on the systems side, not the employee side.
bksenior··on Death to Bullshit
tl;du

The world is full of ideas and things being built everyday. Not respecting the "bullshit" effort of attempting to get an idea to standout with messaging, marketing or any other type of distribution reflects a naiveté and is in fact a practice of inflexible bullshit on what type of ideas are important.

bksenior··on Death to Bullshit
It's funny. This page strikes me as the height of bullshit.

It's basically a manifesto written by an individual interested in being another absolute arbiter of taste. It completely ignores the nuances, relativism and circumstance of how people internalize ideas, make decisions and generally connect.

It even go as far as to say that it is the reason why being a great engineer or creator of things is am anti-pattern for NOT ultimately adding something worthwhile to society.

There is no absolutism to quality of ideas or structure of communications. Their is genuine hard workin taking what you create and weaving into people days and narratives.

This manifesto will one day embarrass it's creator with it's naivety when they are older and more experienced.

bksenior··on Entrepreneurs don’t have a gene for risk–they come from families with money
I can't stress this enough. I was a lower middle class kid who grew up with rich kids and seeing HOW other parents made a life made it so I had no question what I wanted to do. I learned from an early age what I could just apologize for and I developed a very high risk tolerance with proper research. I never took a dollar but always found a way to make it work. 2cents
bksenior··on How the World Looks to Your Phone
It's a painful lesson in how difficult it is to shift expectation once a large group of people brand you as being use for x. Its why myspace couldnt be a music company, why Mel Gibson will always be seen as anti semtic and why it took Rob Lowe two decades to escape a sex tape. Its really hard to change peoples minds once their made up.
bksenior··on Los Angeles Plays Itself
Im born and raised in LA and now live here again, I found this article to be pro-LA in a way that ive almost never seen written. To your point once you "get" LA it's the most interesting diverse city that has ever existed, but like any great love it takes a little patience, a little trial by fire and ends with a huge reward.

This article made me so happy I almost teared up because I sometimes forget how engaged and comforting this city is.

bksenior··on Richest 1% to own more than rest of world, Oxfam says
Wrong. Money becomes family money and when there is an inequity large enough that they can affect large parts of infrastructure you are basically guaranteeing power to scions who were not trained for the responsibility or the value of the fortune.
bksenior··on Show HN: App for Falling in Love
LOL, I've been doing the same thing tonight. Funny that I found this afterward.
bksenior··on Kim Kardashian Mobile Game Makes $43M in 3 Months
Why are you so angry about her ability to generate revenue? I dont like the values she promotes, but clearly there is a market that really responds to her. Learn from her dont hate.
bksenior··on The Ironic Effect of Significant Results on Credibility (2012) [pdf]
Anyone got a tl;dr for this?
bksenior··on What are hedge funds, and what social functions do they serve?
No, you are conflating 'social' with 'legal.'
bksenior··on First Data agrees to acquire Gyft
Any deal details?
bksenior··on Sixth grader's internet-famous science project may have been plagiarized
It's a children's science project! How is this a story?
bksenior··on Just how much is that 2% really worth?
That is a bit shortsighted way to look at value added for being part of a startup. Experience and an elevated role can increase earning power regardless of the start-up outcome.
bksenior··on Square Begins Offering Data Driven Cash Advances to Small Businesses
A credit card is by definition a loan, so Id say they have. Thats why when you open a new business you have an Orcas weight in "sign up for this credit card" envelopes at your door.
bksenior··on An Uber Impact
Anecdotally I take way way more Lyft's and Uber's now than I did taxi's 3 years ago with very little change in my expendable income. FYI, im in LA.
bksenior··on Rap Genius Co-Founder Moghadam Fired
He has had a pattern of this stuff and I can;t really think of another way they could have done it, but all of these stories are starting to read like TMZ.
bksenior··on Rap Genius Co-Founder Moghadam Fired
Terrible comment, but for an industry built on fringe ideas and people it seems the guillotine of public or consensus opinion seems to act quicker and quick with extreme finality. I don't endorse what he said, and agree that he has down some clown'ish things in the past, but the 98% perfect of the non-offensive stuff he does gave Rap Genius a brand in a hyper competitive space and helped establish a brand.

I don't know much about the internal situation at RG and can only imagine he was on thin ice if he was cut so fast, but this trend of public hanging really doesnt give much confidence in unpopular ideas being discussed in public forums.

bksenior··on Ask HN: Horror co-founder stories.
In my experience the important things are:

1. Do they proactively do the tedious stuff when things aren't exciting? Passion waxes and wanes and good co-founders dig deep and push through the bottoms of the motivation cycle.

2. Would you feel comfortable with the, representing YOU if you were not around?

3. How quickly can you find a comfortable and systematic way to constructively criticize one another?

There are more specific details, but these are the non-negotiables

bksenior··on Tesla's relative asks Elon Musk for a donation to finish the Tesla Museum
It would be great if he made the donation as a portion of stock. I think it would fit the "Tesla, the unsung hero" narrative perfectly.
bksenior··on Reasons Not To Raise Venture Capital
A simple voting mechanism would work where you announce the shares you own to the pool you want to join.

bksenior··on In Some Ways, It's Looking Like 1999 in the Stock Market
Thats crazy. IN my experience a good hotel experience is not 9 in 10 trips, but instead significantly less.
bksenior··on What I Learned Negotiating With Steve Jobs
Thats not his job, he is not a historian. His job is to tell an entertaining story and there is a high probability you will be disappointed.
bksenior··on [dead]
This attitude is a big problem at best and purposefully dangerous at worst. In most systematic oppressive situations the smaller voice gets very few moments to speak. All issues are complex and worse yet opaque, but videos serve as smoke, and when your eye follows the smoke sometimes you find fire and sometimes you dont. So now people can peruse their own facts and share this video to others who might jump in the fray.
