bjord··on Marc Andreessen: I regret not doing more to support and defend Brendan Eich
incorrect—eich donated to the campaign for california proposition 8, which was "a state constitutional amendment intended to ban same-sex marriage", and actually passed at the time, but was later overturned in court

bjord··on The Airship to Orbit Project
in contrast with some other commenters, I'm actually not bothered by the terrible website—it makes me think their priorities are in the right place
bjord··on Telegram's peer-to-peer SMS login service is a privacy nightmare
which provider are you using, out of curiosity?
bjord··on Telegram's peer-to-peer SMS login service is a privacy nightmare
it's a really creative solution to sms delivery issues and high costs, but I think it's pretty clear that the issues here outweigh the benefits

glad it's opt-in, at least

bjord··on Detect when your installed Firefox addons have changed owners
It's possible(?) that mozilla automatically generates a similar key for addon devs, but I definitely was not required to upload one when I first published this.

Honestly, I'm not sure what difference this makes. If someone really wants to hide their sale of an extension, they can absolutely include the usage of their dev account to the buyer, rather than making use of mozilla's system for transferring ownership.

If you're curious, here's the relevant section of code. I'm totally open to reworking it if you have alternative suggestions:

https://github.com/maxtheaxe/under-new-management-firefox/bl...

I'm hitting the AMO API directly, so you can see an example response of all the data I'm working with here:

bjord··on AI Infrastructure Landscape
try the guide section! they detail a lot more helpful information about background there
bjord··on AI Infrastructure Landscape
the guide section of the site needs at least a little work

from the guide:

bjord··on Losing Trust in Google
I appreciate the explanation, thank you
bjord··on Losing Trust in Google
grow up and explain why I'm wrong, instead of just downvoting me into oblivion—if I'm really so far off-base, wouldn't you want to correct my understanding of the situation?
bjord··on Losing Trust in Google
99% sure this is the "google hates white people" thing that a specific set of people have been absolutely losing their minds about

gemini produced images of non-white people in a lot of situations in which it shouldn't have

I've read theorized(?) that, in order to counteract disproportionately large amounts of pictures of white people in training data, they basically added instructions after the fact in an effort to generate more non-white people, and totally over-corrected

feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't paid super close attention

bjord··on Frugly vs. Freemium
I respect the effort either way, but is anyone actually paying to remove the frugliness?
bjord··on Aleksei Navalny has died, according to Russian authorities
"died", ok
bjord··on Bard is now Gemini, and we’re rolling out a mobile app and Gemini Advanced
I was able to sign up for the trial, but the page on which I would actually use gemini is a 404.
bjord··on Orange Pi Neo Coming as a Ryzen 7 and Linux Powered Handheld Device
I've also recently fallen into (reading/watching about) it, and from what I've seen, some of them have really impressive levels of community software support

e.g. https://onionui.github.io

bjord··on Orange Pi Neo Coming as a Ryzen 7 and Linux Powered Handheld Device
you'd actually be surprised how much competition there seems to be in the chinese SBC gaming space

it's mostly emulation, though (see https://www.reddit.com/r/SBCGaming/)

bjord··on Ask HN: Looking for lightweight personal blogging platform
every time I've tried to set something up using jekyll and a theme I actually like, I've run into dependency issues, so I'm really liking the look of this
bjord··on Russian guy used ChatGPT API to talk with 5239 girls one Tinder and found a wife
I read his whole thread, and if I understood it correctly (russian is not my first language), his total costs were: $1432 and 120 hours of work: https://twitter.com/biblikz/status/1752348278702641230

That being said, it sounds like, aside from when he was physically in-person with her, ChatGPT did basically all of the communication. It might even still be doing so!

All of it, though technically impressive, is super creepy.

bjord··on Darknetlive Sold to Incognito Market
thanks!
bjord··on Darknetlive Sold to Incognito Market
I'm just disappointed they don't have an RSS feed.
bjord··on Ask HN: Those who've joined a friend's startup as an employee, how did that go?
I was preparing to quit my previous job and begin working full time (I'd already started part-time), and just before I'd planned to do so, he changed his mind and let me and a bunch of others go. At least I got paid for the time I'd already worked.
bjord··on Why isn't Bluesky a peer-to-peer network?
I wish there was a version of this that stooped to a slightly lower technical level, or linked elsewhere to where I might learn more. Given that the tech is relatively novel, are there many other friendly writeups like this?
bjord··on Show HN: EXT – an easy way to build cross-platform desktop software
Just installed it via .deb (on Pop_OS!) and tried to install Vapor Trails, but it crashes. The error is `Endpoint /v1/launch/version-current timed out`, which it spams via popups about a dozen times before I can close it properly.
bjord··on Ubuntu Looking at Discontinuing Its Source ISOs
Did you read the article?

> The Ubuntu sources will remain available and this isn't anything about closing off that, but rather whether the merits and ongoing maintenance burden is worth it for assembling source ISOs.

bjord··on Tell HN: Merry Christmas
oh wow, this is the first time I've seen someone else in almaty on hn
bjord··on The Closing of the Bulgarian Frontier
right at the top of the essay it is the following:

"All illustrations featured in this essay are part of the Bulgarian Visual Archive, a digital project that curates thousands of found and donated photographs. BVA aims to narrate the history of 20th-century Bulgaria through the visual record of both private and public events that have usually been pushed to the margins of official narratives. As part of its mission, BVA offers all of its photographs for download free of charge, for both personal and commercial purposes."

bjord··on MemoryCache: Augmenting local AI with browser data
your site is not loading at all for me on firefox (emulator error) and is totally non-functional on chrome (TCPCreate failed)

might be worth having some sort of automatic fallback to a static site after a certain amount of failed loading or an error

just saw the link to your html version in another comment and it took literally five minutes to load on firefox

bjord··on The Case for Memory Safe Roadmaps
Depends on the company these days. In my initial role, I was given a couple days to "read over the codebase" and was then expected to start producing results. Most of my peers had weeks or months-worth if training before they started contributing.
bjord··on HN website is/was down. I'm curious why?
honestly, I thought it was blocked in my country—glad that wasn't the case
