bjord··on Asahi Linux lead developer Hector Martin resigns from Linux kernel
is this just weird religious adherence to the belief that a multi-language codebase will be harder to maintain? what's the rationale, exactly?
bjord··on Evolving my ergonomic setup (or, my laptop with extra steps)
it's a cool setup, though I wonder if it might be more compact if one designed a new case for the framework (laptop), given that the built-in keyboard and trackpad will go unused

one complaint: I initially had no idea what a "hook and loop fastener" was, and even then I had to google it to confirm it was velcro

bjord··on The Cold Email Handbook
out of curiosity, how do you feel about cold emails asking for a conversation?

I am currently looking for a new job (potentially in a new industry), so I'm doing cold outreach to people whose experience seems relevant and/or interesting, asking for advice, and usually a phone call in which I can pick their brain

would you also view my emails as spam? if not, would you bother replying?

bjord··on Google Cache is fully dead
oh, wow, same! this comment just made me realize that some of my older projects will no longer work after this
bjord··on Show HN: Sisi – Semantic Image Search CLI tool, locally without third party APIs
it's also the name of egypt's authoritarian leader

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdel_Fattah_el-Sisi

bjord··on Show HN: MinutesLink – AI note taker for online calls
not sure if it's just a firefox thing, but something is wrong with some of your previews (html id: animation3), I genuinely think they'd be epileptic seizure-inducing
bjord··on Open-Source Cola
anyone working on a self-hosted CI/CD for this yet?
bjord··on Make Firefox Private Again
that seems to me like a bad faith interpretation of what I wrote—I'm using "bloat" to mean all additional changes beyond the vanilla ff installation

re: "ridiculous", do you think it's likely that there's a deep conspiracy within mozilla (at the behest of google) to make users watch ads? or were you hoping that they'd write a whitelist of adblockers that should never be removed, even when wiping the browser?

bjord··on Make Firefox Private Again
I just did a quick search of your comments on HN and I see that you're regularly sharing/using links to archive.is in an effort to bypass paywalls.

So, given that you're unwilling to pay and that you believe advertising is unethical, how do you expect people to fund the content you consume?

Don't you think it's unethical to expect they do it for free?

bjord··on Make Firefox Private Again
it is—it uninstalls all of your bloat

the suggestion that its purpose is to trick people into uninstalling their adblocker is a ridiculous one

bjord··on Make Firefox Private Again
looking forward to ten years from now, when it meets those requirements
bjord··on France high-speed rail traffic disrupted by 'malicious acts' on Olympic ceremony
what exactly are you arguing? russians should be allowed to keep doping and everyone should look the other way?
bjord··on McDonald's is ending its drive-thru AI test
you do not deserve them
bjord··on Show HN: Unforget, the note-taking app I always wanted: offline first, encrypted
Priavcy first!
bjord··on Sending emails to my three-year-old
it might be enough just to have a headless email client logged in on a personal server somewhere that pulls down incoming emails, and can act as a backup in a pinch
bjord··on Toyota's hybrid bet, once mocked. Now gambles on the combustion engine
What's up with the title?
bjord··on Ask HN: Is anyone else getting eerily similar connection requests on LinkedIn?
Could be. Still, the fact that they both also followed me makes me wonder, because none of the spammy connections in the past did so.
bjord··on Ask HN: Is anyone else getting eerily similar connection requests on LinkedIn?
I'm not really talking about the verification component, moreso the fact that they sent me basically the exact same message.
bjord··on Ask HN: Is anyone else getting eerily similar connection requests on LinkedIn?
They follow me, then immediately send a connection request with a variation of the same message and similar formatting. Is there a Linkedin growth botting service that's gotten popular recently or something? They also have verified their IDs via CLEAR.
bjord··on 300k airplanes in five years
I don't think they're limited to "a thousand planes," I think that's just all they need

the capabilities of planes from ww2 and today are almost not worth comparing

bjord··on Launch HN: Muddy (YC S19) – Multiplayer browser for getting work done
any interest in pointing someone curious about those repeatable patches in the right direction?
bjord··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2024)
I really wish companies like you or mozilla, with righteous missions, had opportunities for people below senior level occasionally
bjord··on Framework won't be just a laptop company anymore
agreed, the service point is a big one and should not be discounted
bjord··on Framework won't be just a laptop company anymore
agreed, it's just not obvious to me what they'd be able to offer over a company like system76, for example
bjord··on Framework won't be just a laptop company anymore
are TVs these days displaying ads over HDMI inputs or something?

what's stopping you from just getting any modern TV and not using the "smart" features?

bjord··on Framework won't be just a laptop company anymore
battery-wise it's a sacrifice, but only because I run linux

wouldn't really be a problem if I were on windows

bjord··on Framework won't be just a laptop company anymore
to be fair, you can always have the package forwarded (that's what I did)

it's obviously not perfect, though

bjord··on Framework won't be just a laptop company anymore
it would be quite funny if it just ended up being basic desktop tower PCs
bjord··on Claude 3 beats Google Translate
yandex translate has been better than google translate for as long as I can remember, at least as far as languages of the former ussr

I'm curious how it stacks up against claude

bjord··on Marc Andreessen: I regret not doing more to support and defend Brendan Eich
my opinions about morality aside, someone pointed out elsewhere that mozilla specifically has an outsized relationship with the LGBTQ+ community, thus making it practically impossible for him to be an effective leader there

he himself actually literally said as much: "Our mission is bigger than any one of us, and under the present circumstances, I cannot be an effective leader. I will be taking time before I decide what to do next." [1]

it was reported on beforehand [2], but as far as I'm reading, there wasn't a serious outcry until 2014, six years after the donation, after he was appointed as CEO (and subsequently ousted)

as for politicians, I think they're by definition mealy-mouthed, and they often just say what they think people want to hear at any given time
