I worked for an ecommerce website a few months ago, when we launched we received big orders we were so happy but unfortunately it's turn out that we had been scammed by people with stolen credit card. Scammers are always looking for new ecommerce to scam, they love ecommerce that are fresh because it's easier to scam newbies :/

RateMySpeaker seems like a great idea ! That could be really useful to detect great underrated speakers as well as a good way to call out overrated speakers . That data must be precious for event organizers IMO

I understand your pain. Things you could (not must) do:

- have many recommendations on your LinkedIn profile from previous startups CEO you worked for (a portfolio is great, but I also want proof that things went smootly)

- show me that you are a long term contributor to an open source project (I know that many startups are afraid that you are gonna close skype and never "show up" again, I think that could reassure them)

- show me that you have a reputation online (twitter/stackoverflow/HN) if you are an authority I will not be skeptical

- dont be (too) cheap. cheap = low quality

That's my PoV, and again it's things you could do not must do. You shouldnt need to prove anything more than a US remote worker (in a perfect world).

Actually I loved the beginning of the welcome message (thank you for taking the time on your busy life ...) but passed a few sentences I scrolled down to find the link.

On the feed page, I think you could reduce the text on the sidebar. I dont care about the welcome message, if I'm registered why do you explain me the website again I should already had understand what Sparkmuse is about. I would delete that paragraph and replace it only by the "Create Spark" button (make it big and colorful, I didnt saw it the first time I saw this page)

You can also reduce the "We want feedback" block maybe you can install uservoice or something.

On the spark page the solution appear 2 times at the top of the page and on the sidebar. Why ? Maybe you should put the question and the solution at the top of the page like Quora/Stack Overflow or other discussions board.

First of all RoR isnt the absolute best programming language in the world. There isnt a best programming language in the world but there is language more suited to your needs !

Ruby on Rails as a Ruby Framework and Django as a Python framework are often praised to be good language to build a MVP. Because with RoR/Django you can build a product relatively quickly and easily.

If you want to learn how to develop, there is vibrant community for both of these frameworks and yes that is important if you want to start !

IMO: Choose your project then choose a language.

I just registered on your site, I love the idea and the design. I was also afraid that I would land on an empty site, but there is already lots of idea to read and discuss about.

One little think that I think you can improve. You seem to love to write :) and I guess talk . We feel that on your website there is a looooot to read maybe to much.I find so much text overwhelming maybe you could reduce or delete some of it. My 2 cents...

On a side note: I tested you product a couple of months ago for my startup (campfire was too expensive for our use) and we finally choosed jaconda.im because they have the gtalk/jabber integration and it was a killer feature for us! We dont need to have a special tab or install another program. We keep our current workflow with one more contact in our list. My 2cents

As far as I know an app cant post or send an anonymous notification to a friend of the user.. So basically that kill the whole concept. Initially we wanted to do a facebook but ToS seemed pretty harsh on the subject...

I will post next week a blog post about how we made the site (design+video+copy+testing+user feedback) . For the moment, we are 100% focus on how to improve the product and build a momentum thanks to the feedback we are receiving :)

To answer your remarks:

1. We added a copy of the email we are sending in the frontpage (click on "what will they receive?") so you can see by yourself that it is a cute little mail. We are monitoring strongly the pourcentages of the crushes and we are testing some variations to know what perform best. You are right we need to communicate trust and we work toward that.

Although if she delete the email there is no arm for you as your anonymity is still preserved.

2. People are generally not that bad, I cant assure you that it won't happened. But SecretPoke only offer 3 free crushes so it should limit the secret poking ring .

I hope you will be served and that it will be with a person for whom you have a crush ;) Give it a try ... Life is full of good surprises :)

Seabee is right, the limit of 3 free crushes help to limitate that side effect.

We cant prevent 100% non-good-faith crushes but you could still have answered to Julie that you entered her email because it was obvious that she was in love in you ;)

SecretPoke only reveal identity if it's mutual so if somebody was joking you, you can always answer that it was the same for you. (I know that it's a little childish but it's "effective")

If you have any ideas to prevent Julies of the world to use SecretPoke to break our little hearts please share with me, we would love to implement some to see what is happening :)
