Don't the empty <div>s just get left behind taking up space when using this method?
bitsoda··on An open letter of gratitude to GitHub
While GitHub makes millions per year, it's important to keep in mind that "GitHub" and every other company is really just a collection of people like you and me. I'm sure their engineers are paid well, but money isn't everything, and it's nice (and motivating) to show up at the office and know there's people out there who appreciate the work you put in regardless of what you're being paid.

There's nothing wrong with showing gratitude from time to time, even if it's for a for-profit corporation if you truly appreciate what they do.

bitsoda··on A new Japanese magazine about construction workers
Heh, it's good to know I'm not the only one snapping shots of construction sites in Tokyo. I was surprised by how well they dampen the noise so as not to bother the surrounding areas. Also, every site had those same white perimeter privacy walls. I wonder if that's mandated for all projects.
bitsoda··on To Fall in Love with Anyone, Do This
Great job, this is really well-done.

Small quibble: the link to the Spanish version of the web app links to the Italian version.

bitsoda··on New Windows 10 Devices From Microsoft
I'm not crazy about paying extra for the tablet capability and hinge as I'll only ever use it in laptop mode, also curious that there's no USB-C port. However, I'm glad Microsoft is showing its OEMs what a proper Windows laptop should be. The OEMs have been shitting the bed on this for years.
bitsoda··on Google Nexus 5x and 6P
Look at it another way, you bought a great phone two years ago that you now get to enjoy for another year! I'd be thankful not for not feeling compelled to shell out ~$400 for a new phone. The only downside is reduced Li-ion capacity, of course.
bitsoda··on VW emissions scandal hits 11m vehicles
Don't forget animal agriculture.
bitsoda··on The Solar Sunflower
Ack, those circles waste so much space. They should put a in an array of hexagonal reflectors instead.
bitsoda··on You Do Not Have to Drink 8 Glasses of Water a Day
If you're thirsty, drink water until you're no longer thirsty. If you're not thirsty, don't drink water.
bitsoda··on Apple OS X El Capitan
Hooray for native window snapping. This is one less utility app I need to install on a fresh copy of OS X.
bitsoda··on Google Self-Driving Car Project
I'm hoping by 2025, but that may be a bit optimistic.
bitsoda··on Apple now rejecting apps with Pebble Smartwatch support
Absolutely. The only other way is through the Cydia app store which requires a jailbroken device, or with a nifty web app.
bitsoda··on The Apple Watch
Gruber's scenario with the two high school kids sending each other love taps, scribbles, and heartbeats was poignant. While the Apple Watch isn't for me, I can't begrudge those who decide to buy one. I think back to the late 90s and how I wouldn't have met my wife if not for IMing a screenname a mutual friend of ours passed along to me.

The internet, a crappy eMachines desktop, and AIM made this possible. Technically, I didn't "need" my own computer at the time, but it made interactions like this possible. Maybe the Apple Watch will create new interactions that could spark something great between people.

Shrug

bitsoda··on Baseball’s Fight with Fatigue
I think he wants MLB to implement a timer between pitches, which already exists (it's 12 seconds), but is rarely enforced.

bitsoda··on Baseball’s Fight with Fatigue
Interesting ideas by the Marlins, but I'd like to see the MLB take this further by cutting down the number of games from 162 to 100, and trimming the inning count from 9 to 7. Sure, the historical data won't match up, but it would be better for the players and more entertaining for the fans to watch shorter, less frequent games.

On an unrelated note, it would be nice if they expanded the playoffs to include 16 teams with the first two rounds being a best out of 5, concluding with the NLCS/ALCS and World Series being a best out of 7, of course. It would get more fanbases interested in their team if they at least made a playoff appearance more often.

The sport could use a shot in the arm in terms of viewership as the average age of your typical MLB viewer is ~54 years.

bitsoda··on How Caffeine Can Cramp Creativity (2013)
I thought it was well-known that when you want to come up with zany ideas you should drink a beer, and when you want to execute on them, grab a coffee.
bitsoda··on Amazon Echo
Hopefully it'll let you program your word trigger keyword -- 'Alexa' is one syllable too many IMO. Also, somebody out there is bound to have a crazy ex-girlfriend by the same name :]
bitsoda··on Mac OS X Yosemite Under the Magnifying Glass
The delivery of the comment was jovial in nature, but I do believe him that the team spent considerable time refining the trash can until they were satisfied with its look.
bitsoda··on Apple Introduces iOS 8
Apple's iOS support for older products has been stellar, though I'm betting iOS 8 will be the last update the iPad mini, iPad 2, and iPhone 4S receive -- they will have had a good run of four years (except for mini) by the time iOS 9 is released.
bitsoda··on Firefox and Flux: A New, Beautiful Browser is Coming
Some users are skittish of Chrome's autocomplete since it could potentially send anything you type into the address bar to Google's servers. Mozilla also makes money from selling 'search box real estate' to different providers. So it's more discoverable when the search is in its own designated box.
bitsoda··on A Tipless Restaurant is a Well-Run Restaurant?
There's nothing that grinds my gears like that blank tip line staring back at me when I pay for my takeout or counter order. The soured rapport is palpable when I hand back the signed receipt and the cashier glances at the striked-out tip space. It leaves an unpleasant taste in my mouth after what should have been a simple transaction. Ugh.
bitsoda··on Phaser – Desktop and Mobile HTML5 Game Framework
No problem! Thanks for investing time into the project -- I'm sure it's a lot of work, and I'm sure the community really appreciates it. I enjoyed your tutorial and look forward to a few more :P
bitsoda··on Phaser – Desktop and Mobile HTML5 Game Framework
Some guy is using this framework to make a game a week. His third game is particularly addictive, yet very simple. Check them out: http://www.lessmilk.com/
bitsoda··on Python with Braces
Why do some people feel like meaningful indentation is a deal-breaker with Python? It makes for readable code even in curly brace languages like JS, Java, and C. In fact, I found the first curly brace example with the odd indentation jarring. Being able to quickly scan a block of code and get a sense for what belongs to which block is incredibly valuable.
bitsoda··on Uruguay legalises production and sale of cannabis
Al Jazeera English posted a really good interview with Uruguay's president, Jose Mujica. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend it.

bitsoda··on ZTE Open Firefox OS phone is available on eBay
I'm not gonna lie, although I love the convergence the iPhone provides, I still miss T9 and have many fond memories texting directly from my pocket to other classmates in high school. Once you mapped the alphabet to the number keys in your mental model, communication was a breeze -- until it came time to actually read a response, of course.
bitsoda··on Google Blindness
Hey guys, use whatever products and services work best for you. There's no need to pledge allegiance to any company, nor is there a need to tear down somebody else for having an opinion.
bitsoda··on Hikikomori: Why are so many Japanese men refusing to leave their rooms?
This hit like a ton of bricks. There are days when I could easily identify with these Japanese men. On the days where I'm more outgoing, confident, and social, I've noticed that feeling productive -- and what I deem to be "happiness" -- go hand-in-hand. It could be something as simple as helping a friend set up their wireless router or tutoring my niece in math. It's almost as if I allow myself to be a part of society once I feel like I've earned it -- as silly as this may sound to those who haven't experienced this phenomenon. Ultimately, and I'm not saying it's a panacea, but what never fails for me is to attain some feeling of productivity or importance.

When I was a kid, my dad told me something that has always stuck with me: "Pretend like everyone you meet has the following sentence stamped on their forehead: 'I want to feel important'".

bitsoda··on Firefox OS Building Blocks find a new home, and get more streamlined
For those wanting to take FF OS for a spin, load up Firefox and search the add-ons directory for "Firefox OS Simulator".
bitsoda··on Learn Python in minutes
What taking notes does for me -- and I assume most other people -- is that it forces me to internalize what I just learned in a way that makes sense to my brain and fits within previous constructs I've already developed through n years of living.
