bitsoda··on Introducing Android 9 Pie
Feels kind of lazy going with "Pie" after having used "Key Lime Pie" in the past. Though technically not a dessert, I was rooting for "Pancake".
bitsoda··on The Effect of Sleep on Happiness
Thanks for sharing this and congrats on the baby. Our first due October 6th and I feel like every day I read an article about how sleep deprivation will kill me and it's been bumming me out. Hopefully our baby will be a good sleeper fingers crossed. 3x/night sounds like a dream!
bitsoda··on Home Depot stocked shelves with empty boxes in its early days
I’d say so! Our family just celebrated 50 years in business.

bitsoda··on Home Depot stocked shelves with empty boxes in its early days
On a related note, my grandfather used to give away a tub of ice cream to his customers on their way out of his furniture store so they’d be forced to go home and freeze it —- preventing them from shopping the competition in the same day.

bitsoda··on What if JavaScript wins?
WASM is a compilation target. Think of it as a little machine in the browser you're writing code for. While you technically could write direct WASM code, the idea here is to have other languages compile to it, which you could then debug as normal.

Outside of needing some extreme performance optimization, most web developers should never need to read or write WASM code.

bitsoda··on Google Is Pulling YouTube Off the Fire TV and Echo Show
You know what, good for Google. I hate to sound like a child, but Amazon fired the first salvo by dropping the Chromecast a few years back. This move only seems fair.

The term is 'Bliss Point' in case anyone was wondering.

bitsoda··on The new Google Calendar for web
7p is just shorthand. Either way, it doesn't work for 7p or 7pm whereas it used to for either format.
bitsoda··on The new Google Calendar for web
Seems like they got rid of their intelligent time parsing. In the old Calendar I could type "Walk dog 7p" and it would create a "Walk dog" event at 7pm. Now it just creates an all-day event with the text "Walk dog 7p". Feedback sent.
bitsoda··on The Life, Death, and Legacy of iPhone Jailbreaking
Regardless of its eventual fate, I'm deeply grateful to the jailbreak community for speeding up Apple's implementation of the useful tweaks power users wanted most like 3rd party keyboards, picture-in-picture, control center, F.lux, etc. iOS is a better platform today because of the JB community, so cheers all around.
bitsoda··on Take Naps at Work
Right? The smell alone isn't fair to other coworkers.
bitsoda··on Apple HomePod
Without Spotify support the HomePod is a non-starter (for me at least). Here's hoping for BT speaker mode.
bitsoda··on Training Your Brain to Be (and Stay) Happy
CGP Grey recently posted a great video titled "7 Ways to Maximize Misery". It's worth checking out.

bitsoda··on Pinboard Acquires Delicious
About a year ago I went into my Pocket and Pinboard archives and realized my collection had ballooned to well-over 10,000 items. Yet, I rarely, if ever, went back to dig up old links so I did a mass purging and closed my Pinboard account. I still use Pocket to save links I plan to read within a week, but I no longer archive anything and keep the list to < 10 items.

I'm not sure what the point of this comment was, but lately I've been thinking about physical vs digital hoarding and thought I would share.

bitsoda··on Sublime Text 3 Build 3132 released
I totally agree with you. I code as a hobby in my spare time making no money off it so I'd rather use a free option.
bitsoda··on Tesla Model S and Model 3 comparison
If you're one of the people who put down the $1K refundable deposit, how do you feel about this page? I understand they're trying to push Model S sales, but don't do it at the expense of customers willing to wait years and put a hefty deposit down.

This strikes me as a rare misplay by Tesla. The Model 3 comes with a glass roof standard so it's conveniently left out of the premium options section -- that's pretty misleading. By the tone of the spec table, you'd think a well-equipped Corolla will be competitive with the Model 3.

bitsoda··on Sublime Text 3 Build 3132 released
The guilt of never paying for Sublime Text finally overtook my conscience so I ended up switching to Atom. Atom would chug memory on Windows 10 so now I curiously find myself using Caret[1] which is much lighter on resources despite using the same web technologies in the background.

bitsoda··on Kotlin is the hero Android needs
You're coming across as a Kotlin hipster. I would just be happy the language is now on more people's radar. Maybe some folks had never even heard of the language before this year's IO. Learning a new programming language and its idioms isn't a trivial time investment for devs swamped with work, so waiting until a heavy hitter like Google throws its weight behind it is quite a pragmatic approach.
bitsoda··on Android O Beta Program
Not yet, but they did provide packs of Oreos for attendees. Apparently they gave these out last year, so it's not a lock.

bitsoda··on Japanese toilet industry agrees to standardize complex bidet controls
Bidets are the way to go, aside from being harmful to the plumbing system, soft wipes still require you to, well, wipe which is kind of barbaric once you get used to cleaning your bum with a jet of water and simply drying yourself after. It also saves a lot of money on paper costs if you use a towel to dry off.
bitsoda··on MacBook Pro
Constantly having to shift your vision forward and down and back again is a usability nightmare. This isn't too different from the gimmicky nature of the Nintendo Wii U. Apple has lost its compass.
bitsoda··on How Apple Scaled Back Its Titanic Plan to Take on Detroit
Agreed, but do we even trust Apple to nail down autonomous software when Siri and anything cloud, mapping, or machine learning-related is always a few steps behind Google's offerings?
bitsoda··on The man behind the million dollar homepage 11 years later
Ironically, the completionist in me would be stressed out knowing there's new content waiting for me everyday. I'd feel compelled to listen to the day's new audio track before it has a chance to pile up over a week, which makes for good business, but would personally stress me out and ruin the whole point of Calm and similar mindfulness services. I'm probably just a weirdo edge case, though :]
bitsoda··on Muhammad Ali has died
Would've loved to see him fight Teofilo.
bitsoda··on Atari co-founder: mobile games make me want to throw my phone
He obviously hasn't played Lara Croft Go. That game is a single-player treasure.
bitsoda··on MacBook gets a Skylake speed boost, 8GB of memory, longer battery life
This is shaping up to be a nice machine. Now if only the keyboard travel weren't so shallow...
bitsoda··on John Oliver on the ugly state of credit reporting and background checks
On the topic of credit checks, it would be oh so nice to have two-step verification whenever a hard inquiry is made. As a recent credit fraud victim, it's been a nightmare spending hours on the phone with the credit bureaus. Some let you dispute inquiries online, while others require a phone call. I ended up just freezing my accounts (for a fee of course, and another fee to unfreeze), and am gonna wait it out until two years pass.

All of this could have been easily prevented if I were required to reply via a text message sent from the credit bureaus when an inquiry was made.

Credit cards already have two-step, why not apply it to potentially life-ruining inquiries? Is there too much money in mafia-like companies who will keep the bad guys away if you just pay them a monthly fee like LifeLock?

The credit system infuriates me to no end.

bitsoda··on Tesla Intrigue Deepens with Musk's Twitter Barrage
Don't rule out HUD gauges projected onto the lower left of the windshield. 95% autonomy in a commercially available car by 2018 is very unlikely IMO.
