bitshiffed··on EasyList: Ad-serving domain removed due to DMCA takedown request
Other weirdness in the commit log for that event: https://github.com/easylist/easylist/commit/1ba8d4afeec6d562... .

Not finding much else, except they do appear to be hosting ad-block detectionn ( https://unknowntray.com/4430b41e83ded20e5f99d3149b838ba9394d... , ref: https://forum.adguard.com/index.php?threads/resolved-venture... ).

Are they DMCAing about blocking ad-blocker-blockers being a tool to "circumvent copyright access controls"?

bitshiffed··on EasyList: Ad-serving domain removed due to DMCA takedown request
I wonder if these were included in the DMCA: unknowntray.com , broadboundary.com , anxiousapples.com , boilingbeetle.com , ... ( https://www.threatcrowd.org/domain.php?domain=functionalclam... )

There appear to be quite a few of these domains, serving the exact same landing page, with Namecheap whois protection, and hosted on Google Cloud.

Hawking radiation, yes. They eventually evaporate.
bitshiffed··on Enhancement of human color vision by breaking the binocular redundancy
I didn't realize we have so much red-green overlap; like we barely qualify as trichromats.

That Cyanistes Caeruleus sensitivity graph is beautiful, even without the fourth cone.

bitshiffed··on White House proposes steep budget cut to NOAA
The really absurd part is that they still wanted that data provided to these private companies from the NWS, just not available to the public.

Almost all of these companies simply regurgitate NWS information pretending it's their own anyway.

Forecasts are fuzzy enough that they may play in that area; but serious things like severe weather warnings only come from the NWS.

bitshiffed··on Raspberry Pi Zero W, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, priced at $10
I eventually gave up and ordered my Pi Zero from eBay scalpers. Will probably have to do that with the Zero W as well.

If they're already for sale at brick-and-mortars then the listings won't be far behind (I don't see any yet, though).

bitshiffed··on Ask HN: How can I volunteer my software skills online?
thorn ( https://www.wearethorn.org/ ) is another project that takes technical volunteers: https://wearethorn.typeform.com/to/pZtK7Z
bitshiffed··on OSX Chrome 55 Blocking non-store extensions without dev mode
I do use my own extensions, that I don't distribute, for many everyday conveniences during browsing. I've reluctantly, given lack of good alternatives, stuck with Chrome for a long time; but this is the change that finally forced me to switch to Firefox. It's not perfect, but it definitely is the least evil.
bitshiffed··on Visual Studio for Mac Preview
It sounds like you're done messing with it; but if you're not, you can install it without the Android/Java stuff. If you let the installer start running, but deny it elevation to write to your system directories when prompted, it will throw up a "manual install" dialog with instructions and links to download the individual components separately.

Then you can download just the IDE, the Mono framework, and the Xamarin.Mac or Xamarin.iOS pieces if you want them.

bitshiffed··on Realistic alternatives to Apple computers
Exactly. This is a list of everything the new MacBooks already have. It sounds like the author should just get the new MBP.

Some of the listed attributes are just odd too: only 16GB RAM? No HDMI? No SD?

Guessing from the relative volumes of complaints that I've seen, a more useful list would probably be something comparable to the previous MBP, but with more RAM and a better CPU, and bonus points for a dedicated GPU.

bitshiffed··on Ask HN: GUI Git client for macOS recommendations
GitKraken (gitkraken.com) is very nice, though not open source.
bitshiffed··on Talos Secure Workstation
This machine is way out of my price range; but I am very interested in the frequently mentioned "open-toolchain FPGAs" in their descriptions.

AFAIK there are only a handful of very specific chips that you can currently get away with not using vendor tools against, like ICE40s.

I would be willing to put a fair amount of money into crowdfunding for better open source -full- toolchains for FPGAs (especially something targeting Xilinx devices). The vendor tools, aside from being closed source, are all huge bloated disasterpieces, and none available for macOS.

bitshiffed··on Forget virtual assistants, Asteria wants to be your AI friend
I had the exact opposite impression.

The hardware didn't sound like anything too special to me; especially with it only needing to handle audio. Fitting enough processing power to handle realtime "AI" in a package that size is the only thing jumping out at me. I'm sure they would be planning to offload that work to some 'cloud' to crunch though. (I personally dislike functionless, network-dependent hardware, but everybody seems to be doing it...)

Promising to deliver an AI that people could see as a friend is absolutely insane though. I don't see people being friends with something that couldn't complete the Turing Test, which will likely stand for at least another decade. Speech recognition and synthesis are in fairly good places, but not human interaction that isn't transparently shallow.

bitshiffed··on Five Types of Virality
I followed the link, having misread it as "File Types of Virality" and thinking it was something about file formats, relating to hosting viruses.
bitshiffed··on Why do so few humans kill themselves?
I think the post is very interesting, and not completely obvious.

It's not as much about people deciding whether or not to commit suicide; it is, that all of the benefits of intelligence also come with one potentially huge evolutionary problem, suicide. Given that any natural variance in likelihood to commit suicide should be very heavily selected for or against, what adaptations might we have that were picked up to decrease it's likelihood?

The idea in the post is that some mental illnesses may be connected to these adaptations.

I do agree with your point; but traffic must very quite a bit along the line. My VTA commutes are almost always full up, to standing room only, unless I go outside of the to/from-Caltrain schedule (and even then, it's almost never empty south of Convention Center).

bitshiffed··on Amino.bio – Homebrew synthetic biology kit
Amino was previously discussed here https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10409433 .

It does look fun and educational! ... But, if you're excited about a "homebrew synthetic biology kit" you definitely want to read the specifics of this kit. It actually has very limited uses. Not to dismiss it though; it probably is the best thing you could currently buy in the area. And the kind of sequence-grow-repeat DIY synthetic biology that may come to mind is still, unfortunately, outside the realm of any realistic affordability.

bitshiffed··on Evidence that “disfluencies” in speech enhance comprehension
I love these disfluencies, at the right times.

Obviously there are variations on use; where cases like overuse from being unprepared can be painful to listen to... But when obviously pausing to think of the best way to describe something to a particular/unfamiliar audience, or summarize a broader idea down to a specific area being discussed, I've noticed how helpful it can be in understanding, at least for the way that /I/ listen to people.

When I hear somebody "um", to think of the best intersection between what they know, context, and what I know, my mind is trying to do the exact same thing, or even beat them to it. For me, this definitely engages me more; even if I come to the wrong conclusion, my conscious thought is saturated with putting these pieces together. Any related information is already active, and easier to link together. -- Compared to someone speed-reading a prepared statement, where I may come away with some high level knowledge, but be too busy parsing the flow of speech to contemplate many of the finer points as they come.

bitshiffed··on Difficult Times at Our Credit Union
The number of US credit unions thrown around is a fairly misleading. The majority of decreases in this number are mergers, not CUs being "shut down". A more useful number may be the total number of US credit union members over the same period of time.

The credit union that disappears form the official count usually doesn't see much more than a name change, and adding new services & members. This usually results in better service for both original CUs members; a combination of branch locations, ATMs, and services from both of the original CUs.

I've also never heard of "force them to merge their assets into bigger credit unions". Would be very interesting to hear more specifics about this, if it actually means something more than 'hassle them so much that they find a larger CU to merge into, on their own, just to escape'.

bitshiffed··on Introducing the Plex Media Player
For Roku, you want the "Plex Classic", instead of "Plex", channel if you don't want to be forced to sign in.

That version is open sourced (https://github.com/plexinc/roku-client-public). The Plex developers have abandoned it, for updating the newer client only; but it's still perfectly usable as the old-version.

bitshiffed··on Introducing Amino: Desktop Bioengineering for Everyone
Amino only covers the next step; growing your bacteria. The kit comes with a single, "living nightlight", sample that you can grow. They also plan to offer additional samples ("Apps"...) that you can buy. As far as tinkering, it sounds like the only intended modification is to the growth liquid: grow in water vs grow in liquid-X.

The company they're working with, Synbiota, does have a "DNA Tinker Studio" kit that looks interesting. It's not full synthesis either though. It contains specific set of available 'parts' to work with, that you combine and get existing bacteria to take up.

There are services, not difficult to find, that offer actual digital->DNA synthesis. Current state, they are expensive, and are focused-on/able-to create only relatively short sequences. Sequence->Modify->Synthesize->Grow, or even targeted splicing, aren't really available things yet, AFAIK.
