bithush··on Poll: Are you a drinker or a teetotaler?
Tee-total. Male 30 living in London, UK. I used to drink in the teens but gave up at 18. Not had a drink since.

I also don't do any drugs so no weed for me.

bithush··on Larry Ellison Will Step Down as CEO of Oracle, Will Remain as CTO
Indeed I thought he was mid 50s, I was kind of shocked when I read 70. I am surprised I never knew this considering.

bithush··on Amazon releases new Kindle products
The Kindle Voyage looks really nice but at £169 (a £60 increase over the Paperwhite) there is no way I will be getting one. That is a lot of money for just an ereader to me.
bithush··on Doom
Well a net worth of around $300 million gives you that luxury ;)

And if the Microsoft rumours are true Notch could be well on his way to being a billionaire

bithush··on CLion – Brand New IDE for C and C++ Developers
It is a shame it only supports MinGW and not MinGW-W64 at the moment.

I hope they settle on Clang/LLVM for the main tool chain and include a complete version of Clang for Windows (when the Clang standard library is done).

I am guessing this would make Notch a billionaire? Wow!
bithush··on Show HN: My first app – The minimalist distance-based transit alarm
Thank you for such a detailed reply!
bithush··on Show HN: My first app – The minimalist distance-based transit alarm
The future of Windows Phone is solely dependent on how Microsoft executes its universal app strategy. If they successfully launch a way of running the same app on Windows (desktop/laptop), Phone and Tablet (non-x86) then it may be able to come back from the dead.

Unfortunately Microsoft have almost no experience at doing such a thing, they have always lived in their [big] Windows eco-system bubble and that may very well be the thing that stops Windows Phone, Windows Tablet's etc from ever becoming a real player in the market.

The next year is going to be critical to Microsoft's long term success as a platform provider outside of PCs.

bithush··on Show HN: My first app – The minimalist distance-based transit alarm
I am quite ignorant when it comes to Windows Phone development, mainly because it never took off how Microsoft wanted it too.

Would you mind sharing the tools and technologies used to develop your app? If not here then a blog post would be fantastic, describing the process from start to end, issues you had with the tools/processes, etc.

One small bit of feedback on the UI, make the background for the "Type or tap destination" text entry field darker, it looks kind of messy at the moment as the background information is too visible.

bithush··on Dyson 360 Eye
I had the same experience. Can't remember the exact model number but it was a normal upright model. That thing was amazing. Shame the wife got it in the divorce :( (heh)

The only things that broke were simple to replace (and pretty cheap to be fair) parts like the hose which split because I over stretch it one too many times. Can't really fault it for that though.

I have had wood floors everywhere now so make do with a dirt cheap hoover but if I had carpets I would buy another Dyson without question. It did such a fantastic job and maintenance was as easy could be.

bithush··on Dyson 360 Eye
Clearly it was designed and tested in IE as that is the only browser that it actually works in. It almost kills Firefox for me.

Is VBScript/JScript not an option? It should be on every machine you come into contact with.
bithush··on Conrod – A Rust GUI Library
Is there any word from Mozilla on their position for an official UI toolkit for Rust?

I am past caring if it is a totally native looking toolkit, just as long as it looks good/consistent across all platforms with hardware acceleration I am good to go.

edit: before anyone gives me shit for doing this it isn't exactly a big secret, it is a pretty poor way of 'securing' the forum. Just stick a captcha on it for gods sake.

bithush··on Computer Games Better Than Medication in Treating Elderly Depression
Indeed. I was diagnosed 5 years ago (age 25) with recurrent major depressive disorder (aka chronic depression) along with PTSD (due to childhood abuse I only started to deal with in my twenties) and generalised anxiety disorder. While the anxiety problems were horrible the worst was chronic insomnia. I have taken part in a number of sleep studies in NHS and private hospitals and two universities as my sleep disorders were rated as "most severe" in that I would sleep for less than an hour per day over a 14 day period which led to all kinds of horrible things such as hallucinations and false memories. For a while I was diagnosed schizophrenic but that was a misdiagnosis as it was simply (ha!) down to exhaustion. I was on 50mg of Zolpidem (Ambien) a night but even that couldn't shut my brain off.

Thankfully my depression and other issues are much better now although I still find it close to impossible to sit down and play a game, watch a movie or read a book for some reason :( It is a great shame as I used to love playing video games as a kid/teen. It is horrible not being able to enjoy something you used to love. It is almost like that part of my brain is been switch off and I can't find the on switch anymore.

bithush··on Computer Games Better Than Medication in Treating Elderly Depression
I am the complete opposite in that my depression made it impossible for me to enjoy any kind of video games (and tv shows, movies and music).

Yeah Ubuntu Mono is lovely. On OS X I really like Source Code Pro but it looks pretty naff on Windows I have found, shame really as I love that font!

Police took a photo with a "swirl" effect of a paedophiles face and reversed it to reveal a very usable picture. So good in fact he was found and arrested.

bithush··on Hacking POS Terminal for Fun and Non-profit
I did some work with PoS systems in the early 90s and I shit you not the VNC password on the customer deployed machines was 'godmode'. These machines were still used, with the same password most likely, in 2010. Scary shit.

No problem, I totally understand. Best of luck with Bvackup.

PS I realised you are the guy behind Hamachi. I used that a lot a while back so thanks for that also!

bithush··on Show HN: Bvckup 2 – Simple Fast Backup for Windows
Yeah I can imagine. Win32 was never designed for animations like that :) You appear to have done a pretty remarkable job though as they are some of the best I have seen in Windows outside of things such as WPF. Well done!

Do you blog at all? I imagine you have some very interesting things you could talk about in regards to Win32 programming. Understandably there are fewer and fewer pure Win32 developers these days and even fewer who take the time to really make a Win32 application look good.

Purely for personal curiosity I have decided to learn C (and most likely C++ as well) as I have no real experience with native development and it is something that has always bugged me. Would it be incredibly rude of me to maybe shoot you an email for a little chat one to one? I totally understand if you are unable too. Thanks!

bithush··on Show HN: Bvckup 2 – Simple Fast Backup for Windows
Ahh yes Dina! I tried it out long ago but have been using Consolas since its release. Just installed Dina and I have to say it looks rather lovely at 8pt on a dark theme! Is that a custom theme you have in VS or something from vsstyles?

The animations in Bvackup are very OS X like. They are beautiful. It has been a very long time since I clicked a button in a Windows app and went "ohh that is sexy!" haha. Also your /wip is very interesting. The level of detail is impressive. I ended up spending about half an hour reading every entry.

Are all the animations completely home baked then?

bithush··on Show HN: Bvckup 2 – Simple Fast Backup for Windows
Lovely looking application. The animations are super smooth. Would you mind sharing what technologies and tools you use? Also, and this is a strange request but this is HN! but what editor theme and font are you using in this screenshot? http://bvckup2.com/wip/tree-db.png
