bitdestroyer··on Washing Machine Cycle Notifications (2020)
I’ve done essentially the same thing for several of our heavy load circuits around the house using an Iotawatt to relay data to InfluxDb. From there it’s pretty easy to write a script that will query the current load and toggle a switch in HomeBridge for automation. Pretty fun stuff.

bitdestroyer··on Factorio is coming to Nintendo Switch
Same, and I have a Steam Deck arriving today…

Also, never play Dyson Sphere Project. It ruined me worse than Factorio. Jokes aside, it’s a fantastically beautiful and well done game.

bitdestroyer··on The Hipster PDA (2004)
I don't think we're supposed to notice him.
bitdestroyer··on ‘This game is so realistic it feels just like working overtime’
I love both of those games but recently took on Dyson Sphere Program after it was gifted to me. I quickly put in twice as many hours as I had in Factorio. There is no combat, it's beautiful, and the blueprint system makes it less tedious. Most of the complaints I have about it are nit-picks and at $20 on Steam, it is absolutely worth the price of admission.

Here's hoping. In the meantime, I've had a ton of fun making small ESP devices that integrate with Homebridge. It's really opened up so many possibilities, even beyond the things that Homebridge is typically praised for.
bitdestroyer··on Why is LinkedIn so cringe?
You're right re: needing a backend server, but that was kind of the point of it. You'd have to be "in the know" enough to install it and then you'd see the styling. It relied on Firebase storage for the backend piece. In the end, it was mostly for a joke in regards to ongoing discussion from an old Mule podcast. As such, it was just for fun anyways and never really intended to be more than that.
bitdestroyer··on Why is LinkedIn so cringe?
Forever ago, I created a Chrome extension that allowed you to annotate skills that had been endorsed by others with a "Hell No" label if you felt it was not deserved. For obvious reasons, it never got traction but got a few laughs on the podcast that inspired it, which was enough for me.
bitdestroyer··on DOOM Captcha
People think they can't figure out which images have stop lights, crosswalks, or bicycles in them now, wait until they introduce the Marauder Captcha.

Just a note, that's Pasco county which is north of Tampa. I believe you're referring to this story that broke a few weeks ago: https://projects.tampabay.com/projects/2020/investigations/p...
bitdestroyer··on Roblox hits 100M monthly active users, bigger than Minecraft
I had to remove Roblox from our devices because all of the levels my daughter would load were either not age appropriate or would put IAP purchase buttons under the controls so you couldn’t avoid hitting them accidentally. It was incredibly scummy. My kids are young so maybe they just don’t know how/where to find decent levels but it felt gross and wasn’t something we wanted to encourage. IAPs were absolutely everywhere in the levels I saw her playing before we made the call.

bitdestroyer··on 2018 Mac Mini Review
There's a running joke on ATP that Marco buys just tons of mics. Not to mention he made Overcast, so he knows audio pretty well.

> 0-249 National Security Orders Received

> 0-249 Affected Accounts

So, I would assume it's fairly safe to say they got 249 NSLs or am I missing something about how people are using ranges to go about skirting this ridiculous law? Obviously it could be within that range, but that's an oddly specific number.

Hence the push for differentiated instruction within classrooms, which I'm sure you're intimately aware of being a teacher. My understanding from my wife, who is also a teacher, is that it can be a pain for a lot of teachers but seems to offer some promise if an instructor can successfully integrate it into the learning process. There's obviously a lot of debate around this subject since teachers are asked to do so much already, but figured it's worth mentioning.
bitdestroyer··on How I Got to the App Store Top with a Simple Currency App
It's probably not eating into your user-base too much, but there is at least one somewhat well known competitor in that space that my wife and I use called You Need a Budget. I say it's probably not eating into your user-base too much because while it's somewhat popular in personal finance circles, I've never met a person on the street that's known about it. I definitely feel like there's room to grow in that area. Anything that helps people meet their financial goals is great so good luck!
bitdestroyer··on A Localization Horror Story: It Could Happen to You
Not to mention that the context of each line of dialogue is pretty close to unambiguous since you have the source material right in front of you for a movie. I imagine it's still a huge job, but has to be more enjoyable that translating/localizing for us asshole programmers and our magic translation strings.

bitdestroyer··on Reddit Acquires Alien Blue, the Most Popular Unofficial Reddit App
The diagonal post context menu "ribbon" is such an odd design choice to me. I suppose it's for using it left handed given the context toggle at the bottom, but still. Seems like something much simpler would also be much more usable.
bitdestroyer··on Shrturl: Faking the web since 1942
If you're feeling particularly nefarious, run the URL that Shtrurl.co gives you through often used and more readily "trusted" shorteners like bit.ly or tinyurl.com.
bitdestroyer··on Nest introduces their Smoke Detector
I would also agree about limiting the complexity, but I do think there's something to be said for the benefits of having the additional technologies the Protect offers, coupled with the ability for the Nest team to update them ([1]) as improvements are found.

It seems to me that as usage increases, the Nest team can use that data to come up with additional features that could incrementally increase the safety of your home over time, however small that increase might be. The obvious caveat being that the updates need to be safe as well, but I think the long tail of a product like this could be increased safety over time, which to me sounds attractive.

Not to mention the benefits this adds if you already use a Nest. We have two in our home and the ability for it to know more about the temperature in different rooms is something I've wanted since we installed them.

In addition to that, you can purchase smart power strips that detect the drop/increase in power on one plug and turn off/on the other plugs.

I've been using one of these for several years now for our entertainment center. You just have to be sure you turn off any devices you don't want the power hard cut from before you turn off the television.
