bitcurious··on Did fermented foods fuel brain growth?
In fact, we’ve got brains so smart they lead to wealthy societies with flat to decreasing populations. Just need to get past the hump.
bitcurious··on Stable Diffusion 3
The latter; there is already an executive order around AI safety. If you don't address it out loud you'll draw attention to yourself.

bitcurious··on Alexei Navalny has died
I’m not sure how the calculations work in other countries, but the US was/is heavily depreciating its donations, and funding/facilitating a much of European donations.

bitcurious··on Developers revolt over Apple's new app store rules
> In the US, laws are taken as very literal, and any technicality that can be exploited usually will be. In Europe, they’re far more focused on the spirit of the law and don’t put up with games.

I was looking to confirm or deny that statement and came across a fun detour in the form of an article entitled "What's So Special About American Law?". It doesn't address the point about spirit vs. detail at all, but is an amusing and informative read.

> As I said, this fact seems to me a deep and fundamental point of difference. The American legal system, to a greater extent than any other Western legal system, encourages the direct injection of democratic values into the legal process. Our legal system, like our society, places great emphasis on the value of equality. We do not fully trust professional elites.

bitcurious··on Built-in workaround for applications hiding under the MacBook Pro notch
Hidden bar has the added benefit of not asking to record your screen, an insane thing to consent to for this very basic bit of functionality.
bitcurious··on I Was Illegally Fired by Amazon for Speaking Out About a Coworker's Death (2023)
In absolute terms are more “modern day” slaves than at any point in time. Actual slaves, treated as property, raped, beaten, worked to death. They don’t work in Amazon.

bitcurious··on Tiny quadrotor learns to fly in 18 seconds
A paper airplane can learn to fly on a breeze in being folded. I posit that a fulmar is closer to a paper airplane than to a drone.
bitcurious··on Just 137 crypto miners use 2.3% of total U.S. power
Bitcoin could be a very market-efficient means of meeting demand for money laundering, extortion, etc., and we could still declare it a useless waste.
bitcurious··on Apple Vision Pro review: magic, until it's not
> It’s been pretty disingenuous of Apple to have all their marketing photos with the single strap, when the unanimous opinion is that strap doesn’t work at all for comfortability or longevity.

"I found the solo loop much more comfortable" - direct quote out of the article you're replying to.

It's a bug/choice that is present in the original as well.
bitcurious··on Proposed top-level domain string for private use: ".internal"

bitcurious··on ICJ orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, stops short of ordering ceasefire
>Personally, as a commander, I would like to say that I have no ill feelings towards the Palestinian people, but we need to get as many of the hostages back as possible, and we cannot allow Hamas to continue ruling Gaza and attacking our civilians as they did on October 7th.

I'm curious about this - the idea that both goals are achievable is a fiction. You either get the hostages, or you eliminate Hamas. Do y'all talk about this?

bitcurious··on ICJ orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, stops short of ordering ceasefire
>There is now no real Palestine state and no realistic prospect of one.

There was never a real Palestinian state. Locally there were Egypt and Jordan, two states that still exist in the same way that Finland does.

bitcurious··on ICJ orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, stops short of ordering ceasefire
>They just want Palestinians to have full human rights on their land, from the river to the sea.

What about the rights to elections? Free speech? To be gay and not be thrown off a building? They don't even support these basic human rights in the land they rule, for the people they claim as their own.

bitcurious··on ICJ orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, stops short of ordering ceasefire
> Well, the alternative to diplomatic solution is total annihilation of palestinians in west bank,

This conflict is taking place in Gaza.

bitcurious··on ICJ orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza, stops short of ordering ceasefire
Germany and Japan were conquered and unconditionally surrendered, after massive civilian casualties. Nazis were tried and executed. If Israel is should model itself on those examples, it's doing the right and moral thing in waging war until Hamas is destroyed, or unconditionally surrenders.
bitcurious··on Teaching D from Scratch: Is it a viable first language? (2021)
> I’m not sure that the choice of the language matters a great deal for an intro course to be honest

Huge disagreement from me! The choice might not matter for the already motivated students who were going to learn to code no matter the language, but for folks on the fringe of CS the language matters immensely. There are arguments to be made about frustration, developer experience, grokability, but imo the most important is distance between code and gui. It’s very motivating to build something you can interact with. It’s very demotivating to work on contextually-meaningless algorithm problems.

bitcurious··on Tesla Employees Using Vehicle Cameras to Spy on 'Private Scenes;' Owners Suing (2023)
A hit and run is detectable by accelerometer, and a half-dozen other sensors on the Tesla. There is no need to upload video unless an event like that is detected, and that scenario should be opt-in.
bitcurious··on Apple Vision Pro available for pre-order
It’s an advantage for passive entertainment but means the device isn’t a real contender for a lot of games.
bitcurious··on Posthog is closing their Slack community in favor of forum
A useful LLM-based product would be something that can scan discord discussions for "useful" information and replicate it in a forum format, for posterity, but ignore the mundane/trivial.
bitcurious··on Pinker was right, I was wrong
I see this curious bit of misinformation repeated quite often, but believing it requires one to be quite credulous.

You have to believe Hamas casualty numbers but ignore IDF, AND you have to believe Russian casualty number but ignore Ukraine’s.

Weird, right?

If you listen to Ukrainians, who I have to believe are at least as credible as Hamas, something like 25k civilians died in Mariupol’ alone.

bitcurious··on Did a 1997 merger ruin Boeing?
That doesn't make sense, the decisions which lead to the 737 MAX debacles were made well before the now receding wave of corporate DEI efforts. 737 Max was announced in 2011, work (likely) started a few years prior to that. DEI started gaining traction around 2014, really took off in 2020, if you trust google trends.

A Boeing with chutzpah would have committed to a new plane in the last decade. Their real failure was a failure to aim high. Long before DEI.

bitcurious··on Apple Vision Pro available in the U.S. on February 2
With a minor press release and just 256GB storage, it seems like Apple is losing faith in this direction. Hope I'm wrong, underlying tech seems super cool.
bitcurious··on FAA orders grounding of more than 170 Boeing 737 Max 9s
The seat is at the very least missing some fabric and cushioning. Winds that can do that to an airplane seat probably wouldn’t leave a human uninjured.
bitcurious··on I Vote on Plagiarism Cases at Harvard College. Gay's Getting Off Easy
The plagiarism allegations were first surfaced about a year ago, entirely unrelated to Dr. Gay’s embarrassing failure to condemn antisemitism.

> Over the past year, the accusations against Gay were a frequent topic of discussion including accusations that she is a serial plagiarist.

bitcurious··on Goodbye Windows Mixed Reality, we hardly knew Microsoft's VR software
Apple’s headset isn’t even available for purchase yet, and you’re already doing a retrospective. Give it a few years, then ask the question.
bitcurious··on Hyperloop One to shut down
I read through a bit of that thread+screenshots, and from what I can gather Paris never actually interacted with Elon, and is basing his retelling on an uncharitable interpretation of someone else’s account.
bitcurious··on 'Like we were lesser humans': Gaza boys, men recall Israeli arrest, torture
>According to the UN, over 150,000 people have been killed in Yemen, as well as estimates of more than 227,000 dead as a result of an ongoing famine and lack of healthcare facilities due to the war.

I think the OP point is why is this the only war being discussed, not that war is victimless.
