binxbolling··on Every company should be owned by its employees
Seems like it's deliberately using "committee" as a pejorative to make a political point. Flip it to "you'll find no statues of groups of people" and it's patently false.
binxbolling··on HPE closing on $13B deal to buy Juniper Networks
HPE did not buy Polycom.
binxbolling··on Facebook Has Been a Disaster for the World
Cancel culture is not primarily anywhere. For as long as humans have existed we have wanted to persuade our peers to avoid some things and embrace others; we have wanted some voices amplified and some quieted; we have wanted people to face the consequences of their actions and to reap what they've sown.

That's all cancel culture is at its root. It's been rebranded in America's asinine culture wars so we can pretend there's some insidious new threat to free speech while the real threats go perpetually unchallenged.

binxbolling··on They Write the Right Stuff (1996)
It's in the article: $35M per year budget ($57M in 2020 dollars).
binxbolling··on In Secretly Recorded Phone Calls, Officers Say Innocent People Were Framed
Well exactly, so we get the concept of "swing states." For 2020, there's likely to really be just 5-6 of them. The fact remains a candidate has to focus on winning electoral votes, and candidates would campaign drastically differently if they had to win the popular vote.
binxbolling··on In Secretly Recorded Phone Calls, Officers Say Innocent People Were Framed
You absolutely don't need to appeal to them (unfortunately). You win over the 11 most populous states and the presidency is yours even if not a single person in the other 39 voted for you.
binxbolling··on Mark Zuckerberg faces employee blowback over ruling on Trump comments
"We will not curb violent speech if the speaker is a notable public figure" is already political. That's a political stance, not an apolitical one, and it's very naive to believe otherwise.

Besides, Facebook has a PAC! In what way is this attempting to be apolitical? Although their donations are split, since 2012 they've given 14% more to Republicans.

binxbolling··on Mark Zuckerberg faces employee blowback over ruling on Trump comments
Amazing to me that so many people in these comments believe Facebook is or can be apolitical. This is a very childish stance, and Zuck is not standing up for their right to remain out of politics: they're deeply political, and Facebook is just asserting which political viewpoints they subscribe to as an organization.
binxbolling··on Facebook executives shut down efforts to make the site less divisive
If you're not being given the benefit of the doubt, it's because your employer has 16 years of lying about this and related issues. Zuck long ago torched whatever shred of trust ever existed, so no, we are not going to be impressed by an extra 0.003% of annual revenue thrown to problems you've created.
binxbolling··on Restaurants rebel against delivery apps as cities crack down on fees
In Germany, 41.8% of households have just one person.

In the USA, 28.4% of households have just one person.

Bitbucket != Gitbucket
binxbolling··on The Subway Is So Late, It’s Making New Yorkers Early
Pretty good description of the T in Boston as well.
binxbolling··on Ask HN: What alternatives to Powerpoint/Prezi are there?
You've just described Articulate Storyline and/or Adobe Captivate.
binxbolling··on Launch HN: Solve (YC S17) – We Save International Travelers Hours of Time
I'm interested in Amsterdam too, but $345 is essentially 34.5% of the price of my direct flight. For many US folks $345 is going to be more than 50% of the ticket... Just way too hard to justify, even to an employer.

And frankly, the 5% discount they're throwing out is more insulting than offering no discounts at all.

Edit: I think to further clarify, the problem is that this seems most useful to casual/recreational travelers, but at business traveler pricing. E.g. if I fly to Amsterdam frequently for business, I'm not likely to need help navigating Schiphol AND you're competing with Privium (cheaper, more benefits). If I fly to Amsterdam as a tourist, I need the help but am unlikely to find the price appealing. IMO Solve is better off targeting casual travelers at a much cheaper cost and leave the business travelers to the clubs & memberships they already belong to.

binxbolling··on How Utah Reduced Chronic Homelessness
FTFA:

"In fact, Utah still has a substantial homeless problem. The overall homeless population is around 14,000.

The chronically homeless, on the other hand, are a subset of the homeless population that is often the most vulnerable. These are people who have been living on the streets for more than a year, or four times in the past three years, and who have a "disabling condition" that might include serious mental illness, an addiction or a physical disability or illness."

Hi there, saw your profile online and was very impressed. I see you're looking for brunettes in their thirties in Metro Boston. I have a blonde in St. Louis who is just a bit over 50 but who I think would be PERFECT for you. Call me ASAP.

binxbolling··on Netflix Is Now Available Around the World
I would agree. I've been on since day 1 of streaming and I'm skeptical the movie catalog has gotten significantly better or worse. Movies come and go, but overall my queue has consistently had hundreds of unwatched movies in it at any given time.
binxbolling··on Martin Shkreli Arrested on Securities Fraud Charges
Sorry I wasn't clearer: I was referring to colloquial use of the word, not what's actually clinically accurate. My experience has been that in everyday use "sociopath" can refer to any of the three, even if (as you mentioned) these are very different diagnoses.
binxbolling··on Martin Shkreli Arrested on Securities Fraud Charges
Also covers Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder.
binxbolling··on Telegram gains 1M users after Whatsapp ban
Not for me. It's every time, even though I can see right in the app my exact computer & browser it still wants me to re-scan.
binxbolling··on How the Washington D.C. Metro got so bad
Would also love to see an in-depth look at how the MBTA got so bad. A couple fancy new/remodeled stations and 3rd rail replacements can't hide the fact that it's an utter shitshow right now.
binxbolling··on Optimizing Content Quality Control at Netflix with Predictive Modeling
I don't even think basic filtering is only appealing to power users. Just some way to find films apart from their recommended, too-cute "genres" would be appreciated.
binxbolling··on Optimizing Content Quality Control at Netflix with Predictive Modeling
Just curious: what are you interested in that Netflix doesn't have? My queue always hovers around 350 unwatched titles, so this always baffles me a little bit.
binxbolling··on Optimizing Content Quality Control at Netflix with Predictive Modeling
So much (great) emphasis on viewing experience, so little emphasis on browsing experience. I've been a customer for over a decade and am just perpetually frustrated; e.g. on the Netflix PS3 app titles automatically start playing when you view their info. So if you wanted to watch that title, it saves you the agony of clicking "Play." If you were just browsing, you now have this thing playing while you're trying to read the synopsis, director, actors, etc. Then, it'll show up in Account Activity as "started" and also affects recommendations ("Based on your interest in...").
binxbolling··on Social media encourages us to follow those we envy
Basically the same for me. Changed my name to a pseudonym in 2009, hid all my photos, and deleted all my info. Now it's a glorified rolodex + lets me see pages for businesses & events that are Facebook-only for whatever reason. Spent a total of 4 years as active user, 6+ as inactive, and vastly prefer the latter.
binxbolling··on The Sports Bubble Is About to Pop
Not sure about dozens, but: you can get push notifications to your phone about teams you follow; scores & updates available right within your fantasy sports app; highlights endlessly replayed on Vine etc; blogs and analysts on Twitter to provide insights without need for a bloviating ESPN pundit; endless ways to identify with your favorite teams, non-score updates & behind-the-scenes stuff via Facebook and Instagram; near real-time sports news on any number of sites.
binxbolling··on Adobe Animate CC, a New Era for Flash Professional
Edge Animate is great, it's really a bummer they're deprecating it.

(Who knows, maybe Animate CC will be Edge Animate more-or-less.)

binxbolling··on Even the LastPass Will Be Stolen
I have 363 sites in my LastPass vault... I'm supposed to write these all down?

Even if you assume many of those sites I don't use anymore, we're still talking a shitload of passwords I'm supposed to have written down somewhere.
