billsmithaustin··on How many American children have cut contact with their parents?
As a parent myself, I think most parents go into it with the best intentions but do not realize how hard it is. Of the parents I know, a handful seem to be naturally good at it. The rest of us muddle through the best we can.

I did not keep in closer contact with my parents after I became a father but I did come to appreciate how well they raised me.

billsmithaustin··on What’s your API’s “Time To 200”?
It’s important if you lose a significant number of potential API users along the way.
billsmithaustin··on Texas gov knew of natural gas shortages days before blackout, blamed wind anyway
The Texas Legislature, which meets every two years, is wrapping up a session right now. To get a sense for how the Legislature has prioritized addressing the grid failure relative to other issues, and what they propose to change, see this list of pending bills at the Texas Tribune: https://apps.texastribune.org/features/2021/permitless-carry...
billsmithaustin··on A teenager's guide to avoiding actual work
I remember around 1980 seeing a “computer programmer wanted” sidewalk sign in front of a strip mall. I wonder if they found anyone that way.
billsmithaustin··on Who Is “Public” Data For?
Rather than debate what “open data” really means, maybe there need to be more specific terms for the Op’s different aspects of openness.

The Worshipful Company of Woolmen is an awesome name for an organization. And their Shop page features waistcoat buttons!

This is a good source for up to date information: https://bikecando.com/forum.aspx.
billsmithaustin··on Great American Rail Trail
I rode the trail from Pittsburgh to DC two years ago. The little towns on the trail were all welcoming. The scenery was fantastic. I look forward to doing more multi-day rail trail rides in the future.
billsmithaustin··on One in five Covid-19 patients develop mental illness within 90 days – study
From the article: “In the three months following testing positive for COVID-19, 1 in 5 survivors were recorded as having a first time diagnosis of anxiety, depression or insomnia. This was about twice as likely as for other groups of patients in the same period, the researchers said.”

I wonder if that means twice as likely as for some other groups of patients, or twice as likely as all other groups of patients.

I remember reading the Spanish flu caused cognitive impairment in some patients, too.

You must have a big pocket if you can fit a 4.6” x 4.4” x 1.55” box in there.
billsmithaustin··on Show HN: Turing Pi 2 – a compact ARM cluster with 32 GB RAM
I don’t understand the claim about 32GB RAM. The diagram shows slots for four RPi compute modules, each of which has 1GB RAM.
billsmithaustin··on Memorizing a Deck of Cards
“Moonwalking with Einstein”, a book by Joshua Foer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonwalking_with_Einstein), is all about memorization techniques and memorization competitions. It’s a great read. He found that while practicing with specific techniques allowed him to win competitions, he still tended to forget where he put his car keys.

How about a tool that spams a Twitter user on behalf of every follower?
billsmithaustin··on Bicycle Geometry Terms
An example: if you want to carry saddlebags (panniers) attached to a rack over the rear wheel, it helps to have a bike with long chain stays so that your heels do not bump into your saddlebags when you pedal.

Sounds like it should run for political office.

billsmithaustin··on My Code Was in the Original Terminator Movie
So it's true: when he's not killing people, the original Terminator processes New Jersey unemployment insurance applications.
billsmithaustin··on Worst Ed-Tech Debacles of the Decade
That was my reaction too. Is there a different market where the ratio of bad ideas to good ideas is better than in education?

I've had tinnitus for as long as I remember. Haven't tried this, but I've read some people have luck treating it with biofeedback.
billsmithaustin··on Show HN: Autopilot written in Keras for Self Driving Cars
How big of a risk is overfitting for these kinds of models? I think common practice is to hold back some of the data for testing.
billsmithaustin··on The architecture of declarative configuration management
My experience is that the production operations engine is hard to get right because your target environment can drift from the desired configurations for reasons that you did not anticipate.
billsmithaustin··on NASA Flew Gas Detectors Above California, Found ‘Super Emitters’
I think it would be more precise to say they are influenced by consumer demand. Consumers consume from landfills, dairy farms, and natural gas facilities, but they do not control them.

It is true that as a consumer, I can try to regulate my demand to reflect how I feel about those facilities' emissions.

At the time time, saying that consumers control those facilities seems to imply that the owners and operators bear no responsiblity for their emissions and are not empowered to change them.

billsmithaustin··on The economics of streaming is changing pop songs

billsmithaustin··on A Manager’s Guide to Kubernetes Adoption
Whether Kubernetes will really drive up your server utilization levels depends on how effective your Operations staff were at bin-packing and whether your a Kubernetes cluster uses cpu quotas. There are inefficiencies in how the Linux scheduler deals with cpu cgroups that constrain CPU utilization.
billsmithaustin··on Judge claims mobile phone is not a computer
Setting a precedent that a smart phone is not a computer seems like a bad idea. Surely there are other laws that smart phone owners (and makers) would want to apply to both smart phones and more traditional computers.
