The 40% "wasted sunlight" doesn't have a cost—sure, yes, kind of besides the point—but it also generates no electricity. That efficiency is further compounded by reductions in incidence by latitude, cloud cover, and time of day. The diminishment thus could be quite serious on any given panel or farm.

My personal true claim about solar that is generally ignored or unknown is that dust reduces solar efficiency by 40% and that the mitigation is frequent washing of panels, which results in considerable water use in precisely the worst areas for that.

This 2024 paper cites a 2016 paper about clouds and dusts that finds 10.4% reduction in efficiency when the relative humidity was 52.24% after two weeks. (The 2016 study is cited in footnote 184 under clasim 12). That's not a desert condition, I can assure you.

The bunny will often include patches in its replies that the PR author can commit. I've never been clear as to which of us is doing the committing but that could be the need for write access. (I always do it myself but I can see how some might prefer the convenience.)

This is very helpful context. I have disparaged HathiTrust in my mind for several of these public domain problems and it makes sense that it's actually a Google Books problem.

The use case for LLM assistance that provides value for me is solving obscure lint or static analysis warnings and errors.

I take the message, provide the surrounding code, and it gives me a few approaches to solve them. More than half the time, the resolution is there and I can copy the relevant bit in the literal verbiage. (The other times it's garbage but at least I can see that this is going to require some AI—Actual Intelligence.)

It remains to be seen whether it's a net value once the VC firehose dries up and the true costs are revealed. It's quite possible that the profitable price is not worth it for most companies.

Orion (made by Kagi) is a WebKit-based browser that eliminates the need for an extension.

I compare LLMs to a door with a slot where you put a piece of paper with a request on it and you get something back related to that request. If it's the same every time, great. But it might be different or completely wrong. You don't know what goes on behind the door and measuring the error rate tells you little predictive.

I was laid off from a company that spent two and a half years transitioning to Salesforce (Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Marketing Cloud, Commerce Cloud, Experience Cloud, Scheduler, 600+ seats) and decided to re-platform to Shopify plus a constellation—like 14 in total—of supporting startups to serve the various needs that Salesforce fulfilled. I was the tech lead and architect of the Salesforce move so I was intimately involved in every use by various teams.

I entered the move skeptical of Salesforce's value; I left impressed with the flexibility of the platform but aghast at the costs and development effort required to do much of anything. (I was also disgusted by the rough edges of its myriad acquisitions and their partial integration into the ecosystem—even after many years.)

Regarding the last paragraph, I'd recommend the feature film "Mystery Men" and the graphic novel series "Astro City." The Amazon TV series "The Boys" also covered this ground but did it a little too ham-handedly for my liking.
