bikeformind··on Tax Season: Why I loathe paying taxes since moving to CA from the UK
The fact we do not receive a simple pie chart from the government that shows exactly where every penny we pay in taxes goes is a criminal travesty.
bikeformind··on Twitter's Recommendation Algorithm
I opened this thread just to verify this would be top comment, good job hn
bikeformind··on Ask HN: What books helped you in your entrepreneurship journey?
Here are some suggestions on the more creative and less tactical spectrum.

How To Get Rich: Felix Dennis

Don’t be fooled by the title. A lifetime of insights and experience from a pioneering publishing magnate condensed into a light enjoyable read.

Creativity Inc by Ed Catmull

goes into great detail about the early days of Pixar. So many actionable lessons about entrepreneurship and operating a creative organization.

The War of Art by Steven Pressfield

Not just for artists this book is a bible for anyone who has difficulty getting out of their own way. provides useful frameworks to understand the concept of resistance and recognize negative self defeating thought patterns that many entrepreneurs struggle with.

bikeformind··on Ask HN: Share Your YouTube Channel
I knew there were a few big creators lurking on hn. I have been a fan of your channel for many years.
bikeformind··on Ask HN: Share Your YouTube Channel
Damn, drug induced psychosis. That sounds frightful. I’ve often thought psychedelic drugs are taken a bit too lightly in public conversation…

I can see how being violently launched into an altered state of consciousness and forced to confront your most fundamental assumptions about base reality is not necessarily a glowingly positive experience for everyone.

Electric Future https://youtube.com/ElectricFuture

Forward looking coverage of sustainable energy technology.

bikeformind··on Interview with the founder of Teenage Engineering
Remember this thing? https://play.date/ (Gameboy with a crank) Made it to the front page on here a couple times, if I’m not mistaken.

Did this ever ship? looks like it’s been in pre-order for the last three years?

bikeformind··on Mysterious Adderall shortage puts ADHD patients at risk
“$26 Billion Agreement with Opioid Distributors/Manufacturer On July 21, 2021, a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general announced final agreements with Johnson & Johnson, a manufacturer of prescription opioids, and the three major pharmaceutical distributors — Amerisource Bergen, Cardinal Health, and McKesson.”
bikeformind··on Mysterious Adderall shortage puts ADHD patients at risk
“In recent months, patients have reported problems filling nearly every type of ADHD medication. What’s stranger is that no one seems to know why.”

Let me help you. Telemedicine apps are prescribing stimulants like candy and half the country has a sweet tooth.

Everyone involved knows what’s going on, and people are getting rich, but the action is a little too hot. Pharma’s nervous about impending regulation so they’re chilling operations to avoid getting targeted in the crosshairs of the impending scandal.

bikeformind··on Need help with students who've turned my class into a dating service
This sounds like the college age mischief you read about in the biographies of founders who go on to build multi-billion dollar companies.

Ladies, let the sweet engineering student help you with your astronomy homework and buy you a chai latte.

The world needs more smart babies.

bikeformind··on Show HN: I'm a doctor and made a responsive breathing app for stress and anxiety
pick up a cheap Fitbit on Amazon, they have a pretty good haptic breathwork flow.

another interesting thought, maybe user could lay down on their back place iPhone on chest, and you can measure breathing with accelerometer? that could be even more accurate than camera + mic

bikeformind··on Show HN: I'm a doctor and made a responsive breathing app for stress and anxiety
You might want to explore using haptic feedback via the devices vibrator motor to prompt the user to breathe in and out.

One short pulse for breathe in, and a longer pulse to breathe out.

This would allow the user to perform the exercises with their eyes closed and the phone on their lap.

I know the visual functionality is core to your design, but might be a good idea to provide some optionality for users who just want to do the exercises without looking at their phone.

bikeformind··on Tell HN: It is impossible to disable Google 2FA using backup codes
Auhenticator has an option to generate back up codes. it creates one or two QR codes that you can scan in a new Authenticator app and it will clone all of your accounts.
bikeformind··on Tell HN: It is impossible to disable Google 2FA using backup codes
To avoid a situation like this, I keep backup screenshots of the 2FA QR codes stored off-line on an encrypted USB drive.
bikeformind··on Telling your inner critic to chill
Harsh truth. You don’t become confident by standing in the mirror shouting positive affirmations at yourself.

You become confident by taking on challenges, repeatedly coming out on top, and providing your brain undeniable evidence you are who you say you are.

bikeformind··on Safe deposit boxes aren’t safe (2019)
To trust an ancient, bureaucratic, and often incompetent institution as the sacred guardian of some small amount of treasure seems highly unnecessary.
bikeformind··on Pornhub users in Louisiana now have to submit government ID to access the site
Let’s play the unintended downstream consequences of misguided policy game…

No fapper in their right mind is submitting their ID to pornhub to have a wank.

This will just drive users to smaller, shadier sites that don’t comply with local regulations.

These sites will contain more harmful or exploitative content, and their increased traffic will incentivize and facilitate a continued cycle of exploitation and abuse.

bikeformind··on What’s in a PR statement: LastPass breach explained
Catastrophic breach after catastrophic breach since 2011. Lastpass has failed their fiduciary duty as a steward of sensitive information and IMO exhibited gross negligence in not encrypting URI data, ostensibly as a trade off for consumer functionality.

not to be overly vindictive, as I understand the near impossibility of running a perfectly secure service at absolutely enormous scale…but does anyone else feel LastPass should shut down the businesses, refund customers, and help them migrate to a new service? You are just not the organization for this job.

bikeformind··on Lastpass setting the delete account div to display: none
…Let’s say you have several crypto exchange credentials stored, as well as a login to a finacial service that requires high net worth accreditation.

Congratulations, you are now a high value identity theft or kidnapping target.

How about a married man who had a secret account on a dating site?

Or the URL of a medical results portal at a specialist institution? Now your medical history is out in the open.

bikeformind··on Sesame allergen labeling law has unintended effect: sesame in more foods
Classic perverse incentive failure.

Most famous example is called the “cobra effect.” In the 1800’s some towns in India had a problem with cobra infestation, so the governement offered a bounty for dead cobras.

People started farming cobras to collect the bounty.

Eventually too many dead snakes were being turned in, so the government stopped paying. As a result, the newly made “cobra farmers” just released all the cobras on to the streets, doubling the population.
