Ask HN: Share Your YouTube Channel

Anyone have their own channel?

Would love to discover some interesting new YouTube channels from hacker news members.

Edit: (Please post a brief description too)

I don't post regularly, but I like to share "video tutorials" which consist of explaining material from a textbook side-by-side with an interactive coding session in a jupyter notebook. Judging by the comments, people like that approach a lot.

Here is a playlist on linear algebra topics: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGmu4KtWiH6-F2JlLVvCT... and repo with associated notebook https://github.com/minireference/noBSLAnotebooks/#chapters-o...

Here is a playlist on statistics: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGmu4KtWiH680gMQnSbSA... and notebooks https://github.com/minireference/noBSstatsnotebooks/tree/mai...

I have a bunch of others in "draft mode" in the works, and I hope to keep making more, as I find these sessions are very useful for me to organize my thoughts in front of an "imagined" audience.

I write books about Chinese tea and host a companion podcast on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@teatechnique

It's a touch niche.

This is very cool, as a Chinese who likes to drink Tieguanyin(green tea) and Dahongpao(red tea), I am very happy that someone can like Chinese tea culture, I wish your channel better and better.

I started a series on how the Game Boy works a few years ago while I wasn't working. I posted the first episode on r/videos and it was unexpectedly successful, so I rushed to buy a better microphone and got to work on the second video. Then I went back to work and realized that I just couldn't keep it up. The amount of effort it took to write, record, edit, and fully animate the episodes was just too much for a side project.

I also made a bunch of mistakes that kinda soured the experience and made me realize I'd have to be much more strict about sourcing, vetting, and reviewing every single detail. I hope I'll pick it back up one day, but it doesn't seem likely.

Occasionally I make music and publish it on my other channel: https://www.youtube.com/@JackGMusic

Cute voiceover, is it a real voice or ML-generated ?

I loved your videos and have always wondered why you didn’t continue! Reading your comment, I think your quest for perfectionism shines through but I think your viewers would be much more forgiving than you are to yourself. Hopefully you can continue one day, maybe keep the scope a bit smaller so you don’t overwhelm yourself.

I've been making daily videos showing my progress building a federated social network called Gibber

TrueNuff.tv Comedy Videos https://www.youtube.com/truenufftv

Some background if you want: Tried the "YouTuber" thing 10 years ago - we got a couple viral vids and it resulted in views and subscribers then YouTube changed the way accounts were handled with Google+ but also how subscribers operate with opting-in for notifications and whatnot so our fanbase effectively just died. We all kinda aged out of making goofy vids but we do have a few we're still editing but who knows if we'll release theme.

Hi there :) ! I have a small Youtube channel with some 3d design/jewelry design/3d print preparation/random fun videos.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCW20BczLnN1SehPu-Me4t0g

If you are interested in learning Blender and or jewelry design, I welcome you to check it out! I have been working as a freelance designer and I have a passion for teaching, I am also a certifite goldsmith and somehow I combined all these aspects in my tutorials. I also have some paid courses accompanying the channel with more in-depth stuff.

It is at the moment more of a side project but I do plan on creating more after I finish my Bachelors degree :P

Have a good one

Astonishing what use-cases Blender can be used for beyond 3D graphics for games and film.

I tried the tutorials in combination with my mediocre knowledge. Somewhat magical to hold a physical object in my hands after clicking around.

How many more classical "hand-based" jobs are about getting disrupted?

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCM4GCy82i41Z1X8pQzjm7Q

Not tech related, but I document the lives of the two Tokay Geckos (male and female, plus now two babies that aren't on the videos yet) living between my outside sofa and house wall in Thailand.

The male gecko came to live there, I had a terrible leftover camera from some other things with like 720p/15fps, stuck it there, put a few videos online. Came back months later expecting to have a handful of views and one of them had like 120k at that point :P

Their life is quite interesting, I've had a lot of fun following them but I've been stupid with the cameras. So far I've ordered three cheap no brand cameras just for this, none of them have been as the specs promised, and the best one broke down some weeks ago. Getting a brand name one soon and hopefully the quality will be much better. Plus I'm not happy that I seem to get most stable views with shorts so I'm kinda torn between posting the videos I'd like to see and videos others apparently prefer.

Large Data Bank: https://www.youtube.com/c/largedatabank

I upload recordings of my weekly CockroachDB database development stream that I do on Twitch (https://twitch.tv/large__data__bank).

I started my channel[0] in 2019 focusing on LeetCode style tutorials in Python. This was before NeetCode and the best source for coding interview prep (at the time) was Tushar Roy's YouTube channel.

Turns out this was a super fast way to grow, but I decided to change directions as I didn't want to become an interview prep channel. Unlisted most of my videos and started fresh in early 2021. (You can still find them on a playlist on my channel.)

From then I made videos focusing on tech I was interested in like Vue.js, Tailwind CSS, React, TypeScript, VS Code, and Vim! Late 2021, I stumbled upon Three.js and graphics programming and that's the main focus of my channel now. My latest video was a tutorial on the Phong lighting method.

Stats: 14k+ subscribers, 1M+ total views, $100-200 per month (passive) income.

Your videos have pretty good production quality. I’m surprised you have only ~50 views per video. The DIY boat tutorial/blog is quite nice!https://youtu.be/xb9xBtJjHvE

Thanks friend, would love to hear your feedback. I think my channel doesn't grow much because I struggle to stay in one lane, every video is slightly different style/content, but it keeps me satisfied creatively and that means more to me.

Damn, drug induced psychosis. That sounds frightful. I’ve often thought psychedelic drugs are taken a bit too lightly in public conversation…

I can see how being violently launched into an altered state of consciousness and forced to confront your most fundamental assumptions about base reality is not necessarily a glowingly positive experience for everyone.

No, and if you're mentally unprepared to deal with it it forces you to become resilient quickly. Thanks for checking my channel out!

I play primarily managament/horror games, and try to focus on highlighting a new indie project I find from time to time (usually 2-3 times a month) while keeping a steady flow of content of about 7-14 videos a week. It's mostly me just hanging out and playing the game, but I want to build a platform to help highlight smaller projects (kind of like SplattercatGaming). If you're interested, don't hesitate to check it out!

Engines and unfinished business: https://youtube.com/@EnginesandUnfinishedBusiness?feature=sh...

Car and motorcycle restoration projects - mostly my wife and I restoring a 1993 Toyota MR2

I also have Big Beige Box: https://youtube.com/@bigbeigebox?feature=shares

Retro computer projects, so far fixing up a cheap Pentium II system, but I’ve got older systems planned

Hello!

Here's mine:

https://www.youtube.com/@PageKeyTech

It's focused on implementing things from scratch and capturing the process on video. A popular series is our PKOS series - attempting to build an OS from scratch and learning a lot along the way.

Now focused on plaintext-daw, which is just what it sounds like: a DAW with Plaintext save files, so you can collaborate on music using Git.

I also have a Discord server for anyone who wants to join, discuss these projects, and help out!

Sounds like a really cool idea for a DAW. Not sure if you’re aware of this, but Ableton save files are just gzipped xls files.

Thanks! And I didn't know that... That's a great tip. Maybe there are some insights to be gained from whatever is inside those XLS files!

Nothing coherent or regular, just paddling and/or whatever I’m up to. https://youtube.com/keizogates

Pretty random stuff - mostly electronics and some programming.

I'll be the first to admit that my initial videos are pretty ropey - but I think I've got into the swing of things now. Almost 27,000 subs can't be wrong!

I enjoy this kind of content, thank you

I've been regularly devblogging the development of my spooky monster zoo management game (The Eldritch Zookeeper) for a few years now - https://www.youtube.com/@CranktrainGames/videos

The game project has gone quite the distance from everything being quickly sketched sprites + checkerboard textures, to everything being shiny & polished, and running cross-platform on PC and consoles.

Electric Future https://youtube.com/ElectricFuture

Forward looking coverage of sustainable energy technology.

https://youtube.com/@shric_

I made a couple of double pendulum videos in 2021 and then walked away. For the first year they got less than 100 views then one suddenly picked up and was getting 10,000 views per day for a few days so I uploaded a few more.

The interest has slowly died down again (500-1000 views per day and decreasing) but I'm now motivated to create more content when I have time.

I am now doing GNU/Linux educational content. I make videos where I install distributions in VMs. Others where I talk about Wayland, and helpful programs written in Rust. And beginner-friendly guides to the command line.

I work on this with my wife at https://www.youtube.com/@ondineequine who does the hard work of being in front of the camera and training the horse. It's called liberty and it's the amazing art of connecting, training and playing with horses without riding them.

Less Talk More Fun

High Output AI - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzuyWHAoUBXJBfVlDRJzbIA

A (mostly) weekly podcast we've been doing for almost a year now. Trying to cover a mix of next, papers and releases through the lens of two previous founders of an AI company.

I do mostly fitness content, but in my last video I let Chat-GPT tell me what workouts to do for a week. And since I’m a data scientist, I talk about the history of chatbots leading up to chatGPT.

You can see it here: https://youtu.be/Gfbwhx1kumI

https://www.youtube.com/@lexplicationdesmetaphores

I have some videos in latin where I read the Vulgate. Also some french videos about 19th century french poetry. I plan to release new stuff about philosophy and linear\integer programming.

Landscape Photography & Hiking: https://www.youtube.com/@RhawiDantas/videos

Nothing technical. Just going around forests and seascapes taking photos.

In the future I want to do less talking and more vistas and surroundings.

Anyone else into landscape photography?

Forgot this one that I'm involved with: https://www.youtube.com/@TheMakerCast

It's a monthly live show with a bunch of makers from YouTube - would be highly entertaining if loads of hacker news people suddenly turned up!

Booth Junkie: https://www.youtube.com/@BoothJunkie

Nothing to do with Dev, or Tech. I'm a voice actor and long-time HN'er who helps other voice actors get set up -- but I can help you find a mic for your streaming setup!

Nice to find you here! Long time subscriber here! Haha small world

Small world indeed! Thanks for your support!

https://www.youtube.com/@polygonjs

It's a channel where I showcase 3D WebGL works and tutorials made with Polygonjs[0], a design tool I created.

[0] https://polygonjs.com

I’m trying to do live coding like projects, one a week. I just started in January and released my 6th today.

I’m an “old school” coder. I don’t use a lot of frameworks. Lots of my first projects are Go command line tools.

https://youtube.com/codazoda

https://www.youtube.com/@xA99

I sometimes post videos of little projects I make, although in the future I hope to find the time to make tutorials like Sebastian League or the coding train

https://youtube.com/@stanislavnikolov7423

I curate a YouTube playlist of interesting, strange, or otherwise insightful content.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0yH4m1eWzvGpI_nloNFq...

It's very important work.

Programming tutorials, mostly JS/webdev: https://youtube.com/@CodewithKristian

Haven’t uploaded for a bit but just set up the new studio and hoping to begin again in the next month or so.

I've started mine recently and am going to focus on Personal Knowledge Management (PKM), note-taking and note-making: https://youtube.com/@dsebastien

Umar Hansa: https://www.youtube.com/@UmarHansa

Made a few videos to help front-end web developers. Such as how to use DevTools, a bit about web performance and other related things.

I have a small channel teaching kids how to code.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrhT70iTB7cVaVJSPLCTfbQ

I am still improving my video making skills.

https://www.youtube.com/@cgpgrey

I never know quite how to explain it: I guess it's best to say I make animated explainer videos about topic that catch my attention.

CGP Grey! Your videos are great, but I must say I don’t understand your video production regimen. Sometimes you can go many months without posting anything. What gives?

It not an easy answer -- if I can cheat a bit and post a second channel that hosts a podcast where I talk about work a lot: https://www.youtube.com/@cortexfm

Some projects end up taking many months unexpectedly, like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEV9qoup2mQ

Some years are a lot of bad luck, like they one that just passed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEFP_taZxo0

Cool, thanks for sharing that. Btw, you’re the reason I’m on Hacker News - heard about it in your podcast many years ago ;)

I love your channel (and podcasts)! I first found you through your alternate vote videos quite some years go. Whenever I have a reason to vote on something with friends or family I insist on ranked choice largely due to your influence.

I knew there were a few big creators lurking on hn. I have been a fan of your channel for many years.

https://YouTube.com/@developerfilip

I do web developer tutorials and showcase incredible web portfolios built in threejs and WebGL. Mostly a webdev focused channel :)

https://youtube.com/@tryexponent

That's fantastic. Kudos on the traction you got there!

How do you pick interview subjects?

A lot of the people reach out to us now at this point! Many of them are also part-time coaches on our website.

Interesting. Just submitted via AirTable. Would love to talk to you.
