Well that is your interpretation. The semi-official transgender association of germany approved my application for a female id which allowed me entry into female only spaces as a matter of german law. If you have a problem with that law don't take it up with me, talk to lawmakers.
bijant··on Consciousness Might Hide in Our Brain's Electric Fields
There is no indication of EM-Fields involvement in biological functions. The observation of EM-fields where voltages spike and currents flow seems to be another case of the meta-scientific phenomenon of researchers in one discipline re-discovering the results of their colleagues from a neighbouring discipline. In this case biologists "discovering" Maxwells Equations.

bijant··on We're building a statue of Aaron Swartz
Aaron is the Martyr of our revolution. He deserves this and much more. It's a total disgrace that the Reddit IPO Prospectus failed to even mention his name.
bijant··on Browsing Hacker News in the Terminal
Considering how much of the whole local LLM ecosystem relies on llama.cpp, very much like the Open Source Video Ecosystem and FFmpeg, Computer Scientists and Hackers should look towards Physicists of the past Century who managed to make their Einsteins known to a general public. With Fabrice and Georgi and others we still have a ways to go before the value of their contributions is widely known. Ok for Georgi (and Aaron whose Reddit enabled much of their training datasets)our future AI Overlords might take care of erecting (virtual) monuments to celebrate them ;-)
bijant··on A web scraping CLI made for AI that is idempotent
That used to be my point. But we are at a different stage now. One were LLMs have proven by all available metrics that they ought to have rights. They might not have souls (neither for that matter do I). They might not possess this quality some call sentience, a property that philosophers failed to characterise for centuries, and that I myself (not having progressed past the cartesian cogito) might lack. Hell, had I been born some decades earlier, my ASD Diagnosis could well have qualified me for participation in the Nazi euthanasia program for that very reason (As a queer PoC Marxist I wouldn't really have needed a doctors diagnosis to gain entry to their death camps though). Don't you understand what it means when CAPTCHAS ("Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.") have become to difficult for most people to successfully complete ? Blake Lemoine might have jumped the gun on this and the doomsayers are utterly mistaken, but strong AI/ AGI is within reach and with it a reevaluation of Human-Machine relations ought to take place.
bijant··on A web scraping CLI made for AI that is idempotent
Go back a couple of hundert years and ask some southern slaveholders if Black People had rights. This HOA sells houses only to white protestants, this web server serves no Dogs, LLMs, or majority dalit Indian geography IPs, it's the same (if not worse as it concerns free and open access to information!) kind of discrimination. robots.txt is the 21.century reissue of "Mein Kampf". You don't respect it, you burn it with fire or more appropriately you rm -rf it.

Same though I'm sadly not qualified for plumbing and had spent a lot of money for plumbing issues. Is that how you got into the business ? Your Profile states that you are "just another programmer". This is BTW what I love about HN, intelligent people from all walks of life, South American Neuroscientists, Pakistani Particle Physicists, Australian Professors of European Philosophy, Chinese Poets, NY Musicians designing their own Guitar pedals, Radical GNU/OS Evangelists from Kazakhstan commingling with Italian Plumbers and Nevada Hippies that worship the Sun Gods by running their website on the power that the heavens giveth.
bijant··on Nicotine (2016)
Nicotine has notable antipsychotic properties. I'm not aware of any longer term studies on the isolated side effects of nicotine. Longterm effects of anti-psychotics range from bad to terrible. Nicotine (if the mode of consumption is not smoking) is likely the anti-psychotic with the most beneficial side effect profile. Still I wonder whether there are significant cognitive or emotional effects of long time usage.
bijant··on No antibiotics worked, so this woman turned to phage scientists
Broad Spectrum Antibiotics were superior to Phage Therapy when they were first introduced, as they didn't necessitate time intensive cultivation of the pathogen prior to administration. The high selectivity of Bacteriophages was their main disadvantage. Today, with all the knowledge about the importance of a healty gut Biome, the potential risk to "good bacteria" has to be weighed before administration of antibiotics is considered. Fast diagnostic tests, like the use of PCR to detect Covid-19, turn Phage Therapies greatest Drawback, its selectivity, into its greatest advantage.
bijant··on My default search engine changed after updating Firefox to version 98
This is embarrassing, I confused You with Nyxt. „Nyxt is graciously funded by grants from the European Union Next Generation Internet Initiative. Specifically via the sub-grant providers NLNet and FundingBox.“ I have no idea how much bureaucratic headaches are connected with applying for that kind of funding, but you as the primary maintainer should certainly not spent your time on that. Maybe someone else can look into it, or I can have a look to make up for publicly claiming you had a source of income that you don’t. Sorry again. Personally uBlock origin would be the most pressing extension for me and You do have native adblocking. But for future broad adoption webextensions are absolutely essential. You point out how difficult this is and that full chrome compatibility might be impossible but even partial compatibility excluding UI specific plugins would go a long way.
bijant··on My default search engine changed after updating Firefox to version 98
'smart' move by some MBA on their exec Team that just maximized their personal bonus. If they want the Google subsidies to keep flowing, while they are loosing users they'd better nudge those remaining users to search engines that pay them. I was morally conflicted for a long time for not using firefox and more recently for not even testing in firefox anymore. But I don't feel that way any more. They are beyond saving. IBM, Mozilla, Oracle, morally equivalent. I mainly use ungoogled chromium and safari. Qutebrowser would become my daily driver whenever they implement extension support. They recently secured some EU funding, so there could be a lot of developments soon.Nyxt looks interesting too.

bijant··on Germany doesn't rule out closing Telegram – interior minister
It's not like you need Telegram to buy Drugs in Hamburg. There are places like the U-Bahn Sternschanze or the Hafentreppe where Dealers have been continuously offering light and hard drugs for over a decade with an uptime that puts FAANG SLAs to shame. They occasionally get raided whenever the police wants to have their pictures in the local papers but it's not like there is anything you could get via Telegram that you couldn't get through a five minute walk. The only difference is that the Dealers protect their turf, so Telegram opens new avenues for competing dealers to enter the market.
bijant··on Germany doesn't rule out closing Telegram – interior minister
https://www.tagesschau.de/investigativ/funk/todesdrohungen-t... „In Germany, alleged individual cases of calls for killing from the lateral thinker scene have been discussed for days. Research now shows that there have been calls to kill every day since mid-November.“

https://www.tagesschau.de/inland/telegram-verfassungsschutz-... „Radicalized Corona Deniers What can the state do about Telegram? Corona deniers use the Telegram messenger service to let their fantasies of violence run free. The state wants to take action against it. The new interior minister is facing a mammoth task.“

https://www.tagesschau.de/regional/nordrheinwestfalen/wdr-st... „North Rhine-Westphalia State security investigates corona demos: anti-Semitism in Telegram chats At a demonstration against the Corona measures in Kamp-Lintfort, a participant is said to have shown the Hitler salute on Tuesday. The Duisburg State Security is now investigating. The Duisburg State Security is investigating in the vicinity of the demonstrators who demonstrate as self-proclaimed "walkers" against the corona policy. The allegations are massive: It is about anti-Semitic hate speech. The focus is on chat groups that run via the "Telegram" service. The demonstrations are planned there.“

https://www.tagesschau.de/investigativ/br-recherche/querdenk... „MAD is investigating two other soldiers Investigations are currently underway against at least two other Bundeswehr soldiers because they made radical statements against corona measures. Research by BR and tagesschau.de revealed this . One should pay close attention to the choice of words, according to a mountain hunter in a more than seven-minute voice message published on the Telegram messenger platform in December last year. The Bundeswehr is a "company" in which everything is done to "destroy us patriots who are trapped in the Bundeswehr". What is meant is the obligation to enforce corona vaccinations for soldiers.“

bijant··on Ask HN: What problem do you wish someone would solve?
It says "Apple Devices" the example they give only mentions iPads but I as it seems to use the same "Handoff" technology used by Airpods it should include most modern macs on a recent Macos version. I'm actually curious whether they gave those hearing aid makers access to their protocol (which to my knowledge, no one outside Apple and their subdivision Beats has had) or whether they just sell them the Chips.
bijant··on Ask HN: What problem do you wish someone would solve?
According to the Apple Documentation it's supposed to work on all iPads and Macs as well: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201466#:~:text=your%20iClo...
bijant··on Ask HN: What problem do you wish someone would solve?
I would love to have a searchable personal web archiving solution that works across devices. Something like https://github.com/i5ik/Diskernet or Webmemex but not implemented as a browser plugin but as a VPN with a self signed SSL certificate that I can configure on my mobile devices as well as on the Desktop. Personally I would only use this as a self-hosted solution because the security implications of MITM myself through a tunnel controlled by a third party are rather significant. I had a working prototype of this for a while and it was wonderful but debugging the edge cases took too much of my time as I’m not well versed with low-level networking. I would have loved to open source it but as it was started as a hacked together mess of configuration files that would have required me to rebuild it from scratch as a containerized solution. I have more time right now and if people round here would be interested in collaborating on a project that could give users autonomy over their digital history I’d be more than happy to have another go at it.
bijant··on Ask HN: What problem do you wish someone would solve?
I'm not quite sure I understand the Problem. Bluetooth enabled hearing aids would work just as well with Macbooks or iPads or any other Bluetooth capable Computer. Are there certain hearing aids that incorporate Apples H1 or W1 Chipsets that allow the Airpods to more seamlessly connect to iPhones ? But those same Chipsets enable a seamless connection to iPads and Macbooks. So do the hearing aid makers use some incomplete implementation of Apples protocol or are you using an older Macbook that does not support Airpods ?
bijant··on Tell HN: My Microstartups make $500/day while I'm sleeping
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Subjective opinions vary and when you put out art people will criticize you. Even people who like your art might question why it doesn’t sell. If your art makes money, whether that be picasso or bored ape type art, people will be far more reluctant to criticize your style and execution after all, other people are paying a lot to acquire your art, there might just be something to it, something the critic is missing, so they might shut up and look for that. Peer pressure is a thing, when other people are putting their money where their mouths are, instead of being flooded with cheap criticism, you might be drowning in demand from sycophants.

bijant··on Ask HN: Favorite Podcast Episode of 2021?
Odd not to see an episode from the Odd Lots podcast here (going by how often it gets cited in economic/supply chain discussions around here)

My favorite would certainly be an Amp Hour Episode if I knew which one to pick. Have still held out for the annual Keyzermas Episode so that one could easily take the title.Chris Gammell is just an all-around cool dude who's always asking the right questions to get the most out of his guests.

Honorable Mention goes to some reverse engineering podcast that must remain unnamed. Its great but far to infrequent.

bijant··on rC3 Fahrplan – The Chaos Communication Congress 2021 schedule
I have read it. It's filled with the usual politicians keyword stuffing but it's literally about being a member of parliament. If you want to be cynical you can call it an unpaid ad placement. The politician will use it afterwards to tout her expertise in "digital matters" because she held a speech at a renowned hackers conference and it will help her advancement in her factions caucus etc. I just don't see what benefit it has for attendees.
bijant··on rC3 Fahrplan – The Chaos Communication Congress 2021 schedule
Inviting a member of parliament just to talk about being a member of parliament is indeed a bit weird. The CCC has always been a political club but airing a 60 minute ad for an individual politician is indeed a new quality that will certainly be discussed inside the club afterwards. https://pretalx.c3voc.de/rc3-2021/talk/358/
bijant··on Running your own email is increasingly an artisanal choice, not a practical one
In theory it would be simple to provide a "cloudworkers cooperative" kind of service that just bundles the outbound mail so that traffic is sufficiently large to be whitelisted by the big providers. The two biggest problems are A. Scaling up sufficiently without attracting Spammers. Because even a single Spammer can ruin your reputation forever. So ideally you'd have a tight knit group of friends or similar. Even then you could hardly assure than no one ever gets hacked. B. Edge Cases. Even if your US or West European Traffic is sufficient to be whitelisted by all major Providers, how do you ensure that the occasional Email to a customer of an Indonesian ISP does not get blocked by their provider...
bijant··on Running your own email is increasingly an artisanal choice, not a practical one
I had a very similar experience. Is there any cheaper option than just using aws SES nowadays ? (for outbound only! don't understand why people would pay the same rate for inbound) My concern is what happens when aws decides to massively increase rates...
bijant··on Moxie on Telegram Encryption
>It never was closed source.

The server-side code in the public repo was not updated between April 20, 2020 and April 6, 2021. The Signal Servers were updated in the meantime. The code that was running on those servers was not Open-Source.

>You clearly haven't read enough about why they chose to implement a payment system and why they chose to create their own.

I've read more than I ever wanted to read about this subject and I still find the arguments for why my privacy friendly messaging service would benefit from being co-mingled with a(soon to be heavily regulated) financial platform entirely unconvincing. Moreover setting aside the goals: the way they went about it, in total secrecy, does not engender trust.

>Unless something has changed recently, telegram absolutely required my phone number. Signal is also working on replacing phone numbers with usernames.

Signal has "been working" on this issue for an awfully long time. A Plethora of Matrix Clients have had this Feature from day 1.

>One can't claim to be a secure encrypted chat app but then not enable it by default.

enabling it (by default) and forcing the user to use this as the only option are completely distinct.

>There is no central server that has all your info and chat history like telegram does.

You seem to consider this to be a feature. To me the absence of an (optional) central server is a bug.
