bigie35··on An Introduction to Meshtastic
In that case I think Reticulum would be the better use case as it's encrypted from the start.

https://reticulum.network/manual/whatis.html

Reticulum is an open-source, cryptography-based networking stack designed to build secure, resilient, and decentralized low-bandwidth wide-area networks using readily available hardware. It operates efficiently over various mediums like LoRa, WiFi, Ethernet, and serial connections, enabling autonomous communication that cannot be easily censored, surveilled, or controlled

bigie35··on PlasticList – Plastic Levels in Foods
While you're correct, my freakout lies in the fact that microplastics have been found to bypass the blood brain barrier...

bigie35··on Hunt for Red October 1990 (2016)
Somewhat related (submarine war movie), is Crimson Tide with Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman.

I can't vouch for the military accuracy, but can say that the drama and intensity is one of best i've seen.

bigie35··on Gilead shot prevents all HIV cases in trial
I take your point, but in fact there are multiple ways one can contract HIV that does not include engaging in intimate and amorous endeavors.

While copulation is the #1 form of transmission, others include:

- Sharing needles - Blood transfusion and organ transplants - Occupational exposure (healthcare workers)

bigie35··on Flowers for Algernon (1965) [pdf]
Read the short story just a few weeks ago. It's still one of my favorite. So beautiful, so haunting.
bigie35··on When every ketchup but one went extinct (2022)
Kinda weird about atlas obscura articles every since it was discovered several articles have been faked.

Granted all those articles were from one author, but I still remain a bit skeptical.

bigie35··on The seedy underbelly of the life coaching industry
Interesting, this is the organization I was referring to: https://wrightfoundation.org/

But I wonder if the two are related?

bigie35··on The seedy underbelly of the life coaching industry
I wish this article covered the more nefarious side of these organizations and "Coaches". Broken families, ruined relationships etc...

Here's the quick and dirty of my brother.

Full disclosure, I have not attended any Wright Foundation courses Myself.

My brother did however, and we are now sadly estranged. Since he joined Wright Foundation he has:

- Estranged himself from our whole family

- Got into serious debt - These courses aren’t cheap. There‘s a reason prices aren’t listed

- Forced a sale of our family business, of which he was an equity partner

Wright Foundation operates like the Landmark Forum and NXIVM. Ropes you in, and breaks you down (question your beliefs and worldview in a group setting), and sells you courses to build you back up again. All the while estranging yourself from those closest to you.

Don’t believe me? Check out the Salon and New York Times articles below.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/15/us/politics/betsy-devos-c...

While it’s hidden now, the Wright Foundation owns

www.wrightinstitutecult.com

How do I know? If you search that url on waybackmachine.com and go back a few years, you’ll see it’s their own site they created dedicated to prove how NOT a cult it is

bigie35··on My experiment in phonelessness was a failure, and it also changed my life
Bob Iger?
bigie35··on Neal Stephenson was prescient about our AI age
I have read three of his books so far - Snow crash, Cryptonomincon, and Seveneves.

By far his most fully formed and epic book for me has been Seveneves. It is hardcore Sci-Fi at an epic scale both in world building and time.

I got 700 pages in when I had to return it to the library or be sent to collections.

bigie35··on A practical guide to quitting your smartphone
FWIW I've had a lot of success with this neat little device: https://getbrick.app/

$40 and no subscription. No affiliation with the founders (who I believe have bootstrapped their business).

bigie35··on Ask HN: How many of you are self employed?
Mostly in their management philosophy.

My dad typically believes in working smarter not harder and my FIL will do basically anything he can to save a dollar including doing most things himself.

What muddies the water a bit is their respective behavior might be a function of the businesses they run.

Our business is a software consulting practice with healthy margins and my FIL has a physical location with high fixed costs (owns a Tennis club).

bigie35··on Ask HN: How many of you are self employed?
After working at various start-ups and Fortune 200 companies as a Product Manager, I am now working at my families niche consulting company.

The twist is my wife is also helping run her family business and while the two companies bring in similar revenue every year, that's about all they have in common.

It's been pretty eye opening seeing how my father and my FIL operate their respective businesses.

bigie35··on Mechanical Watch (2022)
I feel like most watch folks have at least 1 Seiko in their watch case at least once in their collecting journey. Fantastic watches, enjoy!
bigie35··on Lifers, Dayjobbers, and the Independently Wealthy: A Letter to a Former Student
Steve Aoki comes to mind as an example. His family founded the food chain Benihana.
bigie35··on Ignoring boys' emotional needs fuels public health risks
I dont have data to support this, but I can't help but feel that increasingly America has a habit of "pendulum" swinging around societal issues. That is, we severely overcorrect (often time a little too late) that also has the nasty effect of leading to unintended casualties.

On equality, I find it highly disturbing the current policies have amounted to a zero sum game.

bigie35··on Puerto Rico: A U.S. Territory in Crisis
Since my little island is hardly if ever mentioned in these parts I thought i'd throw out a few interesting tidbits.

1. It has three bioluminescent bays : https://www.discoverpuertorico.com/article/guide-to-explorin....

2. It has one of the top 10 beaches in the world: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flamenco_Beach

3. I can't find the stat now, but I think Puerto Rico produces a ton of engineers relative to it's population. Also has pretty good representation at NASA: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Puerto_Ricans_in_the_U...

DM if you want recco's on the island! I'm from Aguada so can help on the west coast :-)

bigie35··on Puerto Rico: A U.S. Territory in Crisis
My family is from there (I was born there) and my parents just installed a solar roof and panels, I can't remember the metrics (sorry) but the house was consuming .5 of the energy and exporting over 3 to the grid.

My parents have batteries as well for the solar power. Sorry not super helpful...

bigie35··on Consultancies know less than they claim and cost more than they seem to
Case in point: Hertz paid Accenture 32 million dollars for a website design that, wait for it, NEVER WENT PUBLIC.

bigie35··on Female spies of MI6
I kinda chcuckle a little reading this knowing without a doubt, someone's job at these clandestine operations is sliding into someone's DMs, hoping for a bite.
bigie35··on Ask HN: What's Your Biggest Regret?
Hi there, you're kind of me but in reverse. Raised Christian, initially very socially awkward as a kid and even in high school, it wasnt until my junior year in college that i really opened up and now that i'm "established" professionally and socially, I've been looking into dipping my toes into the world of psychedelics.

I'd love to chat more if you're interested. You can find my email in my profile.

bigie35··on Ask HN: What are examples of companies dying due to many people quitting?
Lately HN feels more like a bunch of lawyers quibbling over semantics... It gets really old, really fast.

Whatever happened to assume positive intent?

bigie35··on Bluetooth remains an 'unusually painful' technology after two decades
Highly likely I'm misremembering, but a decade (at least) or so, there was an iTunes promo where Itunes literally pushed a free U2 album to everyone who had an iTunes account for free.

I specifically remember the internet hate that received at the time haha.

Here's a link: https://appleinsider.com/articles/18/09/09/the-free-u2-album...

bigie35··on Hollywood doesn’t make movies like ‘The Fugitive’ anymore (2018)
Dark City and The Thirteenth Floor are a few of my top sci-fi movies of all time. Both have themes that echo the Matrix, but done in a much more subtle and thought provoking way IMHO.

It's a shame The Thirteenth Floor came out the same year as the Matrix...

bigie35··on Citigroup plans to hire 4k tech staff
I will say, having worked at Capital one in the past, that it is the outlier here. They have a really strong tech focused culture and from my experience, rarely outsource their tech teams.

To drive this point home, they're creating a whole new business based on the expertise they developed with Snowflake.

bigie35··on Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes (2013)
Had our first baby 18 months ago. While we weren't charged for skin-on-skin contact, we were charged when the nurse offered to take the baby to the nursey so that mom could rest and recuperate for a few hours.

I can't remember how much it was, but I do remember being upset at the cost...

Also, in terms of out of pocket expenses, I think it really depends on your insurance, hospital, and even the state you live in (here in the U.S.).

bigie35··on Lausanne's First Woman Night Watch in 600 Years
A really neat anachronistic tradition that's been around for hundreds of years.
bigie35··on Ask HN: What's the most life-changing blog post you've ever read?
1,000 true fans. https://kk.org/thetechnium/1000-true-fans/
bigie35··on The quest to recreate a lost and ‘terrifying’ medieval mead
It's also terrifying because the honey mix can expand 3-4x, quickly expanding beyond the container you're using.
bigie35··on Stanford: A grim correlation between violence and inequality
I believe primitive agrarian societies had very little inequality but I could be wrong.
