bickeringyokel··on Valve is about to win the console generation
Had to do the same with halo infinite at my friends house, tried to use some burner emails and it kept banning our 2nd player within a few minutes. Gotta love the digital future.
bickeringyokel··on Valdi – A cross-platform UI framework that delivers native performance
This comments spot on. Coming from a guy that used to do mobile professionally as a one man show where the company had multiple apps and multiple stacks. I had the least pain from the ionic stack which I guess is a happy middle ground, but even then there's always some new app store requirement changes to adhere that's almost a full-time job in itself.
bickeringyokel··on M 4.8 – 2024 Whitehouse Station, New Jersey Earthquake
I thought the door frame thing was actually not a good idea? The mantra nowadays is drop, cover and hold on. Which might actually put you in a more precarious situation during said quake.
bickeringyokel··on M 4.8 – 2024 Whitehouse Station, New Jersey Earthquake
Reading this on the toilet now wondering what my priorities would be if there was a quake in the next couple minutes.
bickeringyokel··on Tell HN: It is now impossible to dismiss shorts from your Youtube feed
If youre on Android you can use newpipe, and just see all your subscriptions together sorted by time uploaded. You can still have it autoplay their default algorithms which seems to work just as good as a personalized one.
bickeringyokel··on -2000 Lines of Code (2007)
Anecdotally, I have not found much correlation between age and management style. I have had bad managers of all ages!

I have had one good manager though, and it's pretty obvious what made them great. First is they listen to what problems you have and actually help you do your best work. Secondly, they protect you from the other bad leaders at the company. Thirdly, they work too hard.

bickeringyokel··on -2000 Lines of Code (2007)
The question is really more do they actually act on the feedback on a regular basis?
bickeringyokel··on -2000 Lines of Code (2007)
The cynic in me believes managers actually don't want good metrics because then they have evidence of their bad leadership.
bickeringyokel··on Show HN: TLD Squatting
I have been able to pick up a handleful of useful domains like firstnamelastname.net without much effort and my total spend every year on domains is probably less than 50$. Maybe a dotcom is hard to come by but other TLD are not so bad. Your milage will totally vary, but I would say things are not totally broken, you can find decent domains at good prices if you're a l bit flexible or patient.
bickeringyokel··on Show HN: WAYF – A Simple Scheduling App
Small "bug". Shows "application error" if you submit empty dates. Nice app though.

bickeringyokel··on When the "R" goes missing from R&D (2021)
If you are subject to more corporate performance review shenanigans it feels like anything less than 10x performance is insufficient to upper management. Maybe you will even be subject to something as unhinged as being told not to rate all of your self assessment too highly because it's "not possible" to be high performer in all the meaningless "company values" they put into their performance rubric. perhaps you will even be given the example of "working overtime" as a good example of something to put in your self assessment.
bickeringyokel··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
There is 100$ a year fee for a developer account as well. A bit steep for a hobbyist dipping their toes.
bickeringyokel··on Apple announces changes to iOS, Safari, and the App Store in the European Union
I suppose the difference being gamers seem to hate everything large game companies do, but tech community is pretty split down the middle on Apple being beyond reproach vs them being evil incarnate.
bickeringyokel··on Ask HN: React Native or Flutter for a new app in 2023?
A heavily nested widget can be a little sore on the eyes. You can break up heavily nested widgets into multiple widgets though.

This is also common to JSX though so not sure what the "abominable" comment is referring to.

bickeringyokel··on Ask HN: React Native or Flutter for a new app in 2023?
Flutter is an awesome developer experience and would probably also make sense for small team that needs to support many platforms. I think I would target flutter if I had to support desktop OS.

React-native would probably be preferable if you are just doing iOS/Android/Web due to the maturity of the ecosystem and wide use in the industry.

bickeringyokel··on Mastodon has hit 2M active users today
That's the possibility I'm wondering about. I wasn't really imagining they would pretend it was posted by someone you're following but surround it with some Sponsored content message that made it clear they injected it into the feed of the person you are following.

It sure seems like a terrible idea to me, I'm just trying imagine how exactly they could make it go from an interesting idea of federating, to something that is terrible as meta is one to do.

I think probably the real reason they are federating is to avoid anti-trust issues.

bickeringyokel··on Mastodon has hit 2M active users today
Could meta inject ads into the fediverse?

That would surely get them banned in a lot more instances, but I guess it would technically be possible for them to make 1 in 10 of your posts an ad.

bickeringyokel··on Show HN: Trybsync – Reddit, but as an RSS Aggregator
I think it needs a help/about page perhaps, or some hint about what it is. I think some random person landing here wouldn't know what they are looking at.

I appreciate that you will let me create a password that is 500 characters long

bickeringyokel··on Investigators say they've finally identified the Zodiac Killer
Can't wait for Hollywood to make the new movie and change all the details of this new evidence for entertainment value.
bickeringyokel··on Ask HN: What are the biggest problems in your life?
I try to pick 10 or so things a day I can actually get done. That does help me feel like I accomplished at least a little bit.
bickeringyokel··on Ask HN: What are the biggest problems in your life?
I do throw things into various priority lists and categories, but it still makes me sad that I won't get around to some of them for months or years
bickeringyokel··on Ask HN: What are the biggest problems in your life?
A todo list that will never be completed, and only gets longer.

I can't determine what this article means by "quality", is it gauged by validity or some subjective notion? If it's the latter, I'm not sure how any of this is useful.

bickeringyokel··on Climate activist arrested after ProtonMail provided his IP address
Interesting idea, but is that not a liability to yourself if nefarious or illegal messages are passing through your device?
bickeringyokel··on Googlespeak – How Google limits thought about antitrust
How large a market share does a company need to be a monopoly? Search seems like more of an oligopoly, is there a legal definition of market size for something to be a monopoly or is it more of a case by case thing?

I'd say youtube is probably the closest thing they have to a monopoly, but even then there's tiktok, ig/Facebook etc. Those probably count as video "creator" platforms.

bickeringyokel··on Facebook Launches Workrooms – a new way to collaborate remotely
Honestly, you can't even have a good real-time conversation in normal conferencing software with the audio lag which forced delayed reactions, and people taking over each other. I already don't turn on my Webcam for meetings, that way I can get work done while other people talk about stuff that doesn't concern me. Why make it goofier with avatars and cumbersome headsets? Seems like more of a barrier than a boon. Is there some use case I'm missing where this is likely to actually be super awesome? I'm just not seeing it right now in a work setting.
