I am new to the whole serverless concept, can someone explain how it works? Let's say I have to do some processing on the server (schedule some cron jobs, generate a PDF or send an email), how do I go about doing that? Do I use AWS Lambda for that?
However, I am not too convinced about having a context for each resource. I think that should be optional, meaning that I should be able to specify a context for some related resources but at the same time, I should be able to have resources outside of any context.
For those interested in an alternative, I am currently building a simpler bookmarking tool [1] that works pretty much exactly like Pocket or Instapaper. Email This will extract useful content from a page and send it to you via email instead of you having to download an additional app or login to another service to access your bookmarks.
I have used Slack but it doesn't come anywhere close to emails in terms of ease of use, especially for people in non-technical fields.
But I think this will improve as the adoption of Elixir increases.
I don't have a go to frontend library. I have worked with React and Vue.J's before and if I have to choose one for another project, I'd probably go with Vue.
I am thinking of running Email This on a pay-what-you-want model, but I am not too sure about it though. First priority is to get people to use it and see if they find value in it.
I have now deployed two applications using Elixir. One is a simple blog and the other is the side-project that I am currently working on called Email This [1]. Overall, I've been very happy with Elixir. The learning curve is not too steep and the docs are very exhaustive.
For my next project, I am planning on trying Go. There were many great resources shared in this post on HN today [2].
Is this a wrapper around the browser's default audio API?
I submitted an app [1] using the the Google forms that you have, after submission it takes me to www.webapphunt.co and Heroku says that no such app exists.
You might want to check your DNS records.
I am asking because I am working on a small side-project called Email This (https://www.emailthis.me). I plan to let it run for free, but if someone is interested they can support the app with a donation.
Rails (Ruby) and Laravel (PHP) are some of the other solid options for building the backend.
If I find something interesting, I want to be able to click a button (chrome extension/bookmarklet) that will extract the text from that page, format it nicely and email it to me (preferably to a separate Gmail label).
I can then read it from my email client (iOS/Android email app) during my commute.
I don't want the overhead of a complete app like Evernote or Pocket.
I have tried to reduce the JS & CSS being used on the page. I've only included the grid and navbar components from Bootstrap's CSS framework and there is pretty minimal JS involved.
I have used Turbolinks to replace the <body> tag on each request via ajax.
Other options are to go with static site generators like Middleman or Hugo for your blog and setting up a shop on Shopify or Sellfy.
As a side note, I have open sourced the code [1] for my shop/blog that is running at https://www.authenticpixels.com. It is written in Elixir/Phoenix.
I participated in my first boxing tournament last month and won the bronze medal. I think this was my greatest achievement of 2016.
It wasn't such a big tournament as it only had 15-16 boxers in my weight category and I only had 3 fights.
I was really scared before getting into the ring for the first time, but completing three rounds of my first match was a rewarding experience.
I am having a lot of fun as I find it to be a refreshing approach to web development.
Elixir's guide is quite exhaustive. You can easily start building a toy app over a weekend.
I have open sourced the source code for my blog/web-shop that I built using Elixir/Phoenix. I am not an Elixir expert and this is not the best written Elixir app, but if anyone wants to look at the code for a simple CMS and shop built with Elixir and Phoenix, here is the link - https://github.com/authentic-pixels/ex-shop.

I was browsing through this site called FreshDrop [3] which lists expired/expiring domains and stumbled across a nice name - Metriculator.
Luckily metriculator.com and the social media handles were available. This might not work for everyone but is definitely worth a try.
This is my personal experiment to see if I can build and market a full-fledged SaaS tool. It has also been a nice way to pick up a new programming language (Elixir).
I have a lot of unfinished projects. I start working on a new idea, build out some functionality and then the interest fizzles outs and the project is left unfinished.
This time, I decided to take a different approach - I decided to keep publishing the app incrementally. I started off with just a landing page first, last week I added the demo survey. There are a LOT of things left to be done before I can roll out public access to this project, but getting a few beta users has been a nice inspiration to keep me going.
I was in college then and found making a well-formatted resume a huge pain when I was applying for internships. I met my Co-Founder also via that particular post and went full time on it after passing out of college.
We are bootstrapped, pay ourselves well and work remotely. Not sure if that qualifies as a 'big' success, but we receive these kind of comments from our users that make us super happy - https://www.resumonk.com/testimonials

It is responsive, fully-AJAX (with smooth page transitions) and has 25+ pages - pretty much everything you need to launch your startup/product website.
You can use the free version for your personal/commercial projects without any attribution. If you want to customize this template, you can take a look at the Premium version ($15) which will give you access to the following -
- Complete, well-organized & modular SCSS code base
- Nunjucks based templating (no need to copy changes across multiple HTML files)
- Modern tooling & workflow (automatically concatenate and minify CSS, JS, HTML + Live preview of your changes)
- Pre-built integrations with Ruby on Rails and Node.js
Again, you do not need to pay for this at all if you don't need the above features. Go ahead, download it for free and use it in your projects!
Also, Gumroad makes it necessary to give an email address before downloading. If you don't want that, you can download the release from my Github repo - https://github.com/authentic-pixels/startkit
Let me know if you guys find it useful!

We are bootstrapped, pay ourselves well and work remotely. It has helped us learn how to go about building a profitable business. Also, we have come a long way from that first iteration of the product. I was a rookie at that point and didn't have much of a clue about the software development best practices and how to write maintainable code. The learning that I got by sticking to one project has been immense.
More importantly, it is comments like these that make us super happy - https://www.resumonk.com/testimonials
Thank you HN, you helped us build a profitable business!
All I see is the author fussing about coding style and some such.

ThemeBeacon looks really cool. Love the landing page design.
> I really like the way you have executed on this - particularly the way you show each theme's description while you load the demo page in the background. Are you just pulling themes from ThemeForest at the moment? And may I ask how you're seeding your database? Are you grabbing RSS feeds, or have you built scrapers to go out and grab data from the various description pages?
I've written scrappers that run as background processes every night to fetch data from all the marketplaces (Themeforest, WrapBootstrap and Creative Market).
