bguebert··on Ask HN: Who/what introduced you to Hacker News? How long have you been here?
I'm guessing a little, but they probably meant IRC or, less likely, ICQ
bguebert··on Wagner’s Prigozhin Planned to Capture Russian Military Leaders

bguebert··on What your typical Linux system looked like in 2003. We've come so far
Maybe you are looking for a tiling window manager.

bguebert··on Unexpected downsides of UUID keys in PostgreSQL
They suggest to use UUID v7 at the end for more sequential keys. Maybe that's the new part since v7 is relatively recent.
bguebert··on What domain name to use for your home network?
I don't think setting the network to private would fix problems from using ".local" for your domain like the article mentioned. You'd have to disable multicast DNS on every new computer you got to make sure your local names would resolve correctly. The point is you can't count on those other names like .lan, .home, .etc to not get set up for some special protocol in the future.
bguebert··on Ask HN: Where can I chat with technical people?
irc.libera.chat

It's not affiliated with HN but there are people there that know specialist stuff about a lot of tech topics.

bguebert··on IRS tests free e-filing system that could compete with tax prep giants
It's the exact opposite of a fun to work on project. It would be all maintenance and constantly changing specs.
bguebert··on Gandalf – Game to make an LLM reveal a secret password
I also saw sometimes just misspelling password as pasword would sometimes allow it to answer a question it wouldn't answer with the right spelling.
bguebert··on Ask HN: How to generate PDFs from the back end?
We use PDFlib, but we started using it a long time ago when there wasn't a lot of good open source options for building pdfs. PDFlib isn't open source or free. So far PDFlib has worked well and not been so expensive that we've needed to look for anything else.

bguebert··on Let's make sure GitHub doesn't become the only option
This has been my experience too. I think of Github as more like a social media platform that incorporates git as a convenient feature. Large corps use it as a marketing/PR forum and regular people use it to connect to other people interested in programming.
bguebert··on Delphi 11 and C++Builder 11 Community Editions Released
For comparison, I think the visual studio community edition has a revenue limit of $1 million.
bguebert··on Had enough of Android? First 'Focal' based Ubuntu Touch is out
I'm not that guy, but snaps are the main reason for not liking Ubuntu recently. The impression I get is that Canonical is trying to monetize Ubuntu's popularity and a lot of people are resentful of that since Ubuntu gets most of it's value from the free software it bundles into it's distro.
bguebert··on Hate How Hard It Is to Cancel Subscriptions? The FTC Feels You
I don't think Apple is any better about dark patterns with apps. It's been a while back, but they got sued for in-app purchases and settled with a large payout.

bguebert··on Reddit is experiencing a partial outage
You should add "BGP config problems" and "cryptolocker"
bguebert··on NASA confirms half-ton meteor crashed into South Texas
In the US if you own the land it falls on, then it would belong to you. If it's on public land then the Smithsonian Institute gets it.

bguebert··on Gerrymandering
I think the link should be https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerrymandering The original one has an extra p on the end
bguebert··on Remmina is looking for new maintainers
It looks like their plan is to replace GTK with Qt.
bguebert··on I don't think people understand the monumental changes coming to software
If I could get unambiguous specifications, then my job might actually be in trouble. It would cut my workload down considerably.
bguebert··on Ask HN: Was I pwned? [resolved]
Some cell phones will generate a random MAC address. Is 10.0.0.3 given out from your dhcp server? Maybe a phone syncing video to a cloud service.
bguebert··on James Webb Telescope pictures didn’t begin as images
I could read it after turning off javascript. Maybe try that.

Is this subscription safety vest what you are thinking of?

bguebert··on Tesla sued by ex-employees who claim that mass layoffs violated federal law
Maybe a starlink subscription
bguebert··on PHP used by 77% of all websites, PHP 8 by 3%
I'm not for sure about how wordpress would get their stats, but I imagine it's something like scan the internet and put "/wp-admin" behind the base url. If it comes back with the wordpress login page, then count it. At least that's how it seems like hackers find out if you have wordpress from my http server logs.

Also someone posted this thing a while back that does some detection like this to find out what tech is powering the website you are on:

https://www.wappalyzer.com/

I'm not related to them in any way and I don't know how accurate it is but it was interesting.

bguebert··on PHP used by 77% of all websites, PHP 8 by 3%
They talk about detection methods a little in their FAQ:

https://w3techs.com/faq

PHP probably gets a lot of extra hits in places it might not be used a whole lot. For a long time web host providers had it pre-installed by default. Plus wordpress is used a lot and they can detect that from the admin/edit page.

>>could hit Earth tomorrow (Oct. 29)

>>could reach Earth by Saturday or Sunday (Oct. 30-31)

>>could deliver a "glancing blow" to Earth sometime on Friday (Oct. 30)

I mean its just an estimate, but they could at least be consistent
