Are you sure that command "passes output" to shell which writes it to pty? i think that actually terminal opens pty and passes file descriptor to shell, which passes said FD to new process and it does write directly to it. terminal then reads from other side and renders the received text to the screen. or something like that. shell is not passing the output directly through some buffer.
