bgorman··on Montreal adopts bylaw banning insults against police, municipal employees
As western societies have become more authoritarian, governments are resorting to banning even the most minor types of resistance. For example, when going through airport security in the UK and US you will see signs warning that insulting security officers is a criminal offense. As laws become more senseless and needlessly punitive, this is a disappointing development.

Unfortunately, I suspect eventually this strategy of "containment" of dissent will eventually lead to outbursts of violence since less extreme forms of dissent are not tolerated anyway.

bgorman··on Framework Laptop 12 press reviews are live and Framework Laptop 13 in-stock
I would have bought a Framework laptop but here were the dealbreakers - Ancient Intel processors - AMD option seemed to be accompanied by broken wifi

It's not that hard. Just provide a single modern option that just works. I don't want to troubleshoot device drivers in my spare time.

bgorman··on Dear AI Companies, instead of scraping OpenStreetMap, how about a $10k donation?
Web Attestation, cryptography to the rescue.
bgorman··on iMessage, explained
My prediction is that Apple will start to use attestation (device check) to lock down iMessage. The problem is that this would require a software update for older devices.

bgorman··on Safari 17 Link Tracking Protection
I don’t want these features. This will inevitably break certain experiences. Some features like query parameters are part of HTTP and shouldn’t be tampered with.
bgorman··on Apple announces multibillion deal with Broadcom to make components in the USA
The current Broadcom is actually a spin-off from HP. This spin-off (Avago) has been on a massive mergers and acquisitions spree over the last decade. This culminated with Avago buying Broadcom and renaming itself to Broadcom.

Some of the crappy Wifi+BT chipsets that were sold under broadcom were actually sold off to another company, Cypress Semiconductor.

bgorman··on Tell HN: Cancelling HP Instant Ink prevents cartridges from being used
You are not able to use it until it is empty. You are paying for X pages a month. If you have printed X pages, you need to pay more.

You don't need to use the subscription model to use a printer, you can use regular cartridges.

bgorman··on Ignore Microsoft’s whines about the Activision takeover. The CMA did its job
I think this will ultimately result in more and more companies bypassing the UK. The CMA has proven to make arbitrary decisions unrelated to real competition concerns. While the EU is a large enough market for now, the UK could potentially just be skipped. All European markets are fading into irrelevancy, if the UK decided to be extra difficult to operate in, it will just accelerate its decline.
bgorman··on UK Blocks Microsoft’s $69B Activision Deal
The logic doesn't make sense, and Microsoft also doesn't have a market power advantage here.

The Xbox Series X/S has been a bit of a boondoggle and Sony is vastly outselling Microsoft this generation. Not to mention the existence of Nintendo, Valve and other PC gaming stores. The argument that this would weaken competition for gaming consoles is laughable.

Sony and Nintendo have exclusive games to gain an advantage. Now an American company wants to do the same thing, and they are blocked.

American companies are being put at a competitive disadvantage due to ridiculous anti-trust interpretations. Basically the CMA and FTC are trying to prevent any American tech company from acquiring another tech company for political points at home. How did we get to this point?

It is extremely dangerous to throw logic out the window, as this results in bureaucrats picking winners and losers.

bgorman··on Airbnb Is Banning People Who Are ‘Closely Associated’ with Already-Banned Users
AirBnB is a terrible platform for users.

Recently a host charged me a cleaning fee, left me a negative review about not cleaning. I requested that the cleaning fee be refunded, since it was clearly fraudulent. AirBnB declined to refund the cleaning fee. I will never use them again.

I wonder what can be done to prevent companies like AirBnB, PayPal from becoming so user-hostile over time.

bgorman··on Airbnb nightly rates shot up 36% in 3 years
I had a similar experience. Airbnb still has not refunded me, and the negative review is still online.

I doubt I will get a refund. But I will certainly never use airbnb again.

bgorman··on First LNG tanker arrives at Germany's new floating terminal
Russia has the most nuclear weapons of any country, the largest airborne assault force in the world, the best missile defense system in the world, the second most nuclear submarines (and second best), the third most fighter aircraft, the most tanks.

Russia has a great domestic arms industry/natural resources and can resupply itself in isolation.

People need to realize that Russia's defense is primarily setup to defend its borders.

Any country other than the US would not fare well in a nuclear war with Russia, including China.

China hasn't been at war since the 70s. No one knows how well they would do in a conflict.

You simply cannot ignore nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons are a great equalizer, that is why North Korea cannot be invaded from South Korea, despite South Korea having a much better "conventional" military.

bgorman··on First LNG tanker arrives at Germany's new floating terminal
In 2014 Russia annexed Crimea, and parts of the Donbas became controlled by "separatists".

Ukraine is currently not close to retaking Crimea.

bgorman··on First LNG tanker arrives at Germany's new floating terminal
If Ukraine somehow takes any Russian territory (defined as post 2014)… it is almost guaranteed nuclear weapons would be used to stop the Ukrainian advance
bgorman··on First LNG tanker arrives at Germany's new floating terminal
Vietnam doesn’t border Russia/USSR, and Vietnam isn’t a former Russian territory with millions of native Russian speakers.

Western countries need to ask themselves: is funding a major proxy war against the second most powerful military in the world in our long term strategic interest?

bgorman··on TV disappears, but HBO Max removing shows feels different
I am a pretty loyal HBO max customer, despite the troubles with the service. The content is just too good.

I thought this would be about B-tier content. But Westworld? Arguably HBOs biggest hit since game of thrones? What are the MBAs looking at? It was bad enough that Westworld was not in 4K.

Now that the White Lotus is over, maybe i should cancel

bgorman··on XFCE 4.18
HiDPI support and fractional scaling are simply must-haves for anyone with a computer built after 2011.
bgorman··on XFCE 4.18
XFCE should be spending all of its development efforts on supporting Wayland. The project's priorities are clearly not in the right place to ensure the future growth of the project. Market share will continue to decline until wayland support is added, no matter how great any new features are.
bgorman··on Show HN: TinyUX – Grid based low-fi wireframing on your mobile phone
You need to get an iOS app out yesterday. The UX/design world is filled with Apple loyalists.
bgorman··on DoorDash lays off 1250 employees
Doesn't this violate anti-discrimination laws? It seems like this discriminates against US citizens (discrimination by national origin).
bgorman··on 'It's like living in an igloo' People are turning off their heat as prices surge
In the US, we have government programs to educate, feed and house the needy. None of these programs have solved the problem.

Public education in particular sees very bad outcomes for poor students. It is time to privatize.
