bgnn··on Prozac 'no better than placebo' for treating children with depression, experts
My own experience with SSRIs was very unpleasant. Sure, it worked to reduce my anxiety problems while I was on them for years. The first year I was off of them was the worst though. I didn't have that bad anxiety ever, as in constant panic and feeking of impeding doom. This made me realize that they aren't really an option of me. So began my long therapy journey. After 7 years of weekly therapy, a healthy work-life balance, and regular exercise I'm just feeling better than ever.

So, I'd buy that they don't fix your brain. They definitely reduced anxiety for me and I can see the value for stabilizing people so they can do the heaking work in therapy.

bgnn··on A new documentary about the history of forced psychiatric treatment in Spain
I would have never thought to see a Franco apologist with my own eyes. Wow, thank you for this unique moment.

Anyhow, Franco was a fascist trash and allied with Hitler and Mussolini. Revolutionaries were mainly anarchists (NOT communists). In fact it's because of Stalin and the communists following him starting an infighting with the anarchists led to the fascist victory.

If the revolutionaries have won, Spain would have been an experimental socialist/anarchist republic. We don't know if ot would have been ended up like USSR. Maybe.

In 1968 though the flight was pretty much about fascism vs democracy.

Oh, last point: Torture is torture.

bgnn··on All praise to the lunch ladies
Unfortunately it's far from the norm in Europe.

In the Netherlands there's no school lunch available. Families need to provide it to their children. The norm is just bread and cheese sandwich and milk, doesn't matter how rich you are. That's what most adults eat for lunch too.

bgnn··on How the UK lost its shipbuilding industry
That's unbelievable. A lot of 3rd world countries have their own refineries.. Wow.
bgnn··on Reverse engineering a neural network's clever solution to binary addition (2023)
The second step, passing the analog output through shifted tanh functions, is implementing an analog to digital converter (ADC). This type ADCs were common back in the BJT days.

So: DAC + sum in analog domain+ ADC is what the NN is doing.

bgnn··on Apple M5 chip
a lot of people use it in music production for example. weird indeed.
bgnn··on Dutch government takes control of Chinese-owned chipmaker Nexperia
This. They gave the keys to the management of the business units and layers of managerial hierarchy under.

I did my PhD project in collaboration with NXP research which used to be the semiconductor division of Natlab. At every project meeting there were at least 2 mid level managers from 3 business units funding the projects+ 2 mid level managers from the research department + 1 engineer overseeing the technical work. So, it was 8-9 managers + 1 engineer + 1 PhD student. They were all chill and didn't roadblock anything for me, apart from all business units deciding to do their own development on the same topic because they didn't trust anyone else. So I was mostly left to myself because the money was already given but they lost interest. They were still attending the meetings as a break from the other meetings I thought.

bgnn··on Dutch government takes control of Chinese-owned chipmaker Nexperia
In this situation I disagree. This is a blatant seizure of the control of a foreign owned company for political reasons. This is straight out of China's playbook.

I agree that the West is in general different, as in this is more an exception than the rule. But being in the semiconductor industry, I'm fed up with the stupid rules we are dealing with since the 1st Trump admin. Even more stupid is the US foreign policy affecting EU companies much more than US companies.

bgnn··on Dutch government takes control of Chinese-owned chipmaker Nexperia
Can't you say the same for the West though? This news is about a Chinese company's control being taking over by a Western government.
bgnn··on Dutch government takes control of Chinese-owned chipmaker Nexperia
The same government forced NXP to sell its RF power division to Chinese JAC in 2015 due to NXP and Freescale merger. Isn't that great?
bgnn··on Dutch government takes control of Chinese-owned chipmaker Nexperia
A bit of history:

Nexperia was formed because back in 2017 (if I remember correctly) Qualcomm wanted to buy NXP. So NXP wanted to look more attractive to Qualcomm shareholders and sold its more low-tech business unit to Chinese investors. That acquisition didn't go through because of the tensions between US and China during the first Trump admin.

NXP has been trimming fat since its formation from Philips Semiconductors and American or Chinese companies are buying whatever business unit they can grab. They pretty much buy it for the IP and the customers. Once they get the IP they usually fore the whole team and shut dient operations in NL.

Nexperia wasn't doing this though. They had no interesting technology to steal oe transfer to China to begin with.

bgnn··on Aerocart cargo gliders
of course not. no chance this would compete on cost and volume with those.
bgnn··on Qualcomm to acquire Arduino
just a correction: Mediatek is Taiwanese.
bgnn··on How Israeli actions caused famine in Gaza, visualized
Anyone who isn't from the West, hell even Southern Europeans, are taking note. There is no rights and freedoms for us. All this for to support a bully of a fundamentalist state and a bunch of theocratic kingdoms/emirates.
bgnn··on How Israeli actions caused famine in Gaza, visualized
This is very much one sided. Other side of the argument, in civillians supporting horrible violence, doesn't do any favors dor Israel. Most of the world is appalled in the delusional civil society.
bgnn··on Boeing has started working on a 737 MAX replacement
I had the exactly same experience with AirBaltic. It felt so modern!
bgnn··on Inflammation now predicts heart disease more strongly than cholesterol
Lifestyle.

Not sitting a lot (more than 1 hour at a time), walking or cycling everywhere, not eating a kot of sugar/refined carbs..

bgnn··on US cities pay too much for buses
I see a lot of people saying this is due to lack of competition. I hate to break this to you but it isn't that. A lot of European countries thinking the competition will drive the costs down, including on the supply side, and liberalizing the market realized not long after that this did nothing to reduce the cost. More often than not it drove the cost up.

The problem is that the public transportation is never truly free market, as they are always heavily subsidized. More companies relying on subsidies to do business doesn't change the fact. On the supply side, bus manufacturers have the same. US federal govrhas strict requirements to buy American made busses. I think NAFTA might be ok too, but not sure. In any case, what the US government paying for is manufacturing jobs and this is not necessarily a bad thing. Or let's put it another way. Those busses can be produced in China or Japan for much cheaper. But then you will let go of this industry, and have more dead towns and small cities without jobs.

bgnn··on The Beginner's Textbook for Fully Homomorphic Encryption
It's so bad that the only way FHE can get more efficient is to use a non-conventional compute technology. Some want to do it in optical donain.
bgnn··on Britain jumps into bed with Palantir in £1.5B defense pact
UK had a really good shot at defying fascism if Labour didn't have these right wing group of people who are afraid to even look like left. Corbyn was really really close and the result could have been a UK without a cost of living problem. Alas..
bgnn··on The Fisherman and His Wife (1857)

bgnn··on Garmin beats Apple to market with satellite-connected smartwatch

bgnn··on I should have loved electrical engineering
You could do engineering without knowing about partial differential equations, or numerical methods. Most digital IC designers, FOGA guys etc do that. You would be missing some tools though. Not needing a tool ever doesn't mean it's not used anywhere else. You can't get into RF, proper signal integrity, or analog circuits without these and some more.
bgnn··on U.S. Emissions Rise 4.2%, China's Fall 2.7%
Except when you are Germany. Then you shut down the coal plants and replace with natural gas.
bgnn··on U.S. Emissions Rise 4.2%, China's Fall 2.7%
Not in the history so far. I'm just trying to balance the extreme negative view on Chinese subsidies. They are of similar nature, and scale (as percentage of the total economy). In the EU we have this view of Chinese EVs because they get subsidies from the state, whereas we are doing the same for European car manufacturers (especially Germany amd France). We can at least be rational in our analysis.
bgnn··on U.S. Emissions Rise 4.2%, China's Fall 2.7%
True. But as usual there is more to it. US is running on cheap fossil fuels to most part, though the renewables aren't negligible too. The fossil fuels are actually subsidized, and they are cheap because they are results of exploitation of cheap land. On top of that there are subsidies like tax breaks on the drilling costs etc.. To be fair this is also the case for hydroelectric etc.

So, similar dynamic. If the oil fields, coal mines etc would be sitting on prime land, you wouldn't have it this cheap. If there weren't subsidies, they wouldn't have been this cheap. It's very hard to compare different energy sources because of this. But solar being cheap isn't only a Chiblnese phenomenon. India, Spain etc all prove this. It's cheap when you have a lot of empty land and sunshine.

bgnn··on U.S. Emissions Rise 4.2%, China's Fall 2.7%
Most of Chinese emissions are due to the production of American products.
bgnn··on U.S. Emissions Rise 4.2%, China's Fall 2.7%
Neither the US cares about the climate amd doesn't care about the optics either.

This is capitalism in action: solar is cheaper than anything else per kwh. The obsession with fossil in the West is due to the fossil fuel lobbies, not because of the rational market forces. China doesn't have that.

bgnn··on De minimis exemption ends
I think this is exactly the intended consequence. This is a protectionist economic policy, and its consequences will be reduced imports and exports.

US is the biggest market for everyone, because they have the sweet sweet dollars and that dollar is the global reserve currency. The government is fighting with that to be honest, and they aren't only hostile towards China, but to the whole world. EU amd Canada are actually at the top with China.

bgnn··on De minimis exemption ends
They can ship it from EU or Mexico or what have you. This type of warehouse and forwarding service is very widespread.
