bgia··on Ask HN: What are some of the most elegant codebases in your favorite language?
C++: ClickHouse. It is very readable and easy to navigate. Call stacks that you pick up in logs are very descriptive, and you can easily tell what went wrong.
bgia··on 'It’s Parasitic': Little Star Pizza Owner Lambasts DoorDash, Uber Eats
As a non-native English speaker, calling places is absolutely soul crushing. People cannot understand my name, cannot understand me spelling it, and half of the time I cannot understand them back. Why have me call and tell you my name for you to be typing it when I could enter it in the computer myself?
bgia··on The truffle industry is a scam
But it does say “Natural Aroma” which the post claims is code for “fake truffle smell”. The list mentions “truffles” but they may very well be the type of truffles that has no flavor — with all the flavor coming from the “natural aroma”.

I think you’re making the author’s point.

bgia··on Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Drugs
Because their lives depend on it? Why do people keep paying ransoms? Does it mean that ransoming them is a good thing?
bgia··on hiccupFX.js
This definitely hits a nerve. Google does that nowadays and I cannot count how many times I have clicked by mistake on these suggested links that show up after all results have already loaded.
bgia··on Watch photos on the Rolex site show the exact current time
How do they do it? Do they cheat and have a video for every minute of the half-day? Or is it actually a CGI rendering of the watch ?
bgia··on AltStore: An alternative app store for non-jailbroken iOS devices
This system resigns app with your developer signature, and to work around the expiration leaves a server running on your computer that periodically resigns apps and updates them over the air on your iPhone.

I think this is simple yet genius. I wonder if it works on AppleTV as well?

bgia··on Show HN: Structopt for C++ – Parse command line arguments by defining a struct
Pretty cool. I like it. Seems one more step toward simplicity than Click for instance.
bgia··on Ask HN: What’s your daily/weekly routine?
Why is that downvoted? Genuine question. It feels just as relevant as the other comments. Sure it's a specific case of someone having a newborn, but that's hardly uncommon and could apply to a lot of people here (if not now maybe later in life).
bgia··on Ask HN: Where to Search for Remote Jobs?
I’ve heard that toptal (https://www.toptal.com/) is a good place to start, because you can get paid decently and you get in touch with serious employers.

I don’t have experience with them nor am I affiliated to them, so to take with a grain of salt.

bgia··on Bitcoin: I am a time-traveler from the future, here to beg you to stop (2013)
Should add (2013) to the title.
bgia··on Tobacco industry generates highest net income per employee
Exactly. And nobody gets addicted to crayons.
bgia··on Ask HN: What problem in your business is worth paying 10k/y for?
Extracting data from PDF in a reliable way.
bgia··on Steve Bannon Wants Facebook and Google Regulated Like Utilities
If we could regulate ISPs as utilities first, that would be great.
bgia··on France to end sales of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040
They're bringing the amount of power generated through nuclear energy to 50% in the upcoming years. Chances are that in 2040 they'll be way under 50%.
bgia··on Ask HN: Victim of an unfounded harrasement accusation. Your thoughts?
Keep an open mind. I don't know you, nor your coworkers, but you may have done something that feels "normal" to you but is actually inappropriate without even realizing. That's why it is important to raise awareness on misogyny and the rape culture: a lot of the problematic behavior seems perfectly normal and acceptable to the perpetrators, but it's really not. Not saying that's what happened with you, but it could have and the only for you to find out is to get a clear explanation on what the complaint about you was exactly.

I'd recommend approaching HR (or management) keeping this in mind. You could tell them that these are serious accusations and that it makes you sick to even imagine you made someone feel that way. You could show them you genuinely don't understand what was wrong but are willing to improve and to work on yourself so you don't ever make anyone uncomfortable again.

My 2cents, but again: I don't know you, the company you intern in, nor have I ever been in such a situation. So please take my post with a grain of salt.

bgia··on I have $12M in Bitcoin I want to give away
Shouldn't that person start by provisioning for their taxes? The tax liability of such a position is probably around 6 to 8 millions depending on the country the person lives in.
bgia··on Ask HN: Why do companies outside the US pay so much less?
My wage in the US is about 3 times what I'd be making home in France. 3 times. Trust me I'm not working 3 times as many hours as my friends over there. Actually it's quite the opposite.
bgia··on Ask HN: Why do companies outside the US pay so much less?
Tech companies in the US are extremely profitable and there is a stronger demand vs lower supply than in Europe. A typical tech company in France usually manage to make $100k of revenue per employee, so it is understandable that they can't pay them more than $60k on average. Then it's "market rate". Foreign companies just have to pay what local companies do.
bgia··on Ask HN: Why do companies outside the US pay so much less?
Employers in the US do the same thing. On top of your salary they pay ~7% for your retirement (social security, the public retirement), then taxes for your unemployment and a bunch of state taxes, and if you work in tech they pay for your health insurance (the one at my previous employer was $600/month). Usually they will also match money you'll put into your private retirement account. That's usually another $7-9k in good tech companies. I.e. When you're paid $100k in the US in tech, your employer pays at least $120k as well. So that doesn't explain the difference at all.
bgia··on Ask HN: What do you discuss in your one on ones?
It's funny because when I read the sentence "the 1:1 is primarily for them" i didn't realize you were a manager. To the me the 1:1 is primarily for the manager. I need my manager to talk about their perception of how the work, more specifically my work, is going.
bgia··on Ask HN: How many hours of interview “homework” is appropriate?
It's up to you. That doesn't feel absolutely absurd to me. If you work with them, you're going to spend much more than 8 hours working... 8 hours is very small to judge people, but it will give them an idea of how clean and careful you can be. Companies like Automattic would start with a 4-8 hours assignment, then if you do well, they would ask you to work part-time for them for 2 weeks. Some companies won't ask you anything except to code for one hour over the phone...
bgia··on Fewer than 3% of cars sold in the U.S. have manual transmissions
I do. I've been driving stick shift for most my life and moving to automatic made a huge difference.
bgia··on Free, Worldwide, Encrypted Phone Calls for iPhone (2014)
How do they make money? I couldn't find this information on their site.

edit: I'm asking because on their hiring page they say they are not venture backed. I'm just wondering how they are funded.

bgia··on Yahoo’s Brain Drain Shows a Loss of Faith Inside the Company
except if they bought a $1M house in SV
bgia··on [dead]
facebook.com and messenger.com completely down in Seattle.
bgia··on Ask HN: Company got acquired, new contract seems oppressive
You're being biased by the climate in the US. A lot of union rep would give free legal advice to nonmembers, especially for small and common things such as clauses in employment contracts.
bgia··on Ask HN: Company got acquired, new contract seems oppressive
Where do you come from?
bgia··on Ask HN: I am the dumbest person in the room. What should I do?
You said you are in a "quite desirable software company", so I assume it is not a small one (especially if people have a bad mentality). Just hang on for a while, and try to move on to another team: you can claim that the culture in your current team doesn't fit, and try to find one that's more open to juniors. From my experience a lot of senior engineers are more than happy to help if you "do your homework first", which you seem to be doing since you work very hard every night.
bgia··on Ask HN: Why Can't I Sign Up with Medium Other Than Through Facebook or Twitter?
I don't want to seem too suspicious, but does it have something to do with Medium having been created by Evan Williams, former CEO of Twitter?
