bg4··on How to parent more predictably (2018)
We've had a lot of success with praising desired behaviors rather than discipline of unwanted behaviors. Also, using 'think throughs' has been an effective teaching tool (ask the child to think through and say out loud what needs to be done etc)

This is great advice for life in general.

I feel the exact same way. I'm on a 5 year exit strategy to become a luthier.
bg4··on Absolute truths I unlearned as junior developer
I think it's better to document the context/intention/business reasons and let the code speak for itself.

bg4··on Remote working – Bringing sanity to mind and lessons worth learning
I work remote for a company and about 50% of the workforce is remote. It works fine as there are enough remote workers that everyone is used to accommodating. If you're a one off remote worker, and most folks are used to accommodating, it definitely can be tough.

And self-indulgent.
bg4··on Ask HN: Low self confidence and self esteem. How to improve?
It’s all in how you perceive it. You’re in control. You can dispense with misperception at will, like rounding the point.
bg4··on How I Run a Company with ADHD
I have ADD and sleep apnea, a double whammy of conditions that society likes to mislabel as 'character flaws'. I took ADD for a few years; it helped at first but after a year or so I had to stop because I was becoming very angry when on it. I believe the exhaustion/constant jet lag of the apnea (even with CPAP treatment) and work/kids entirely depleted my patience and self-control and the adderall then exacerbated my temper. I'd much rather be foggy/forgetful than angry.
bg4··on Riding alone in a car is an increasingly unaffordable luxury
The claim was that there was no such thing as a traffic jam. I suspect induced demand and bus bunching would cause bus filled traffic jams.
bg4··on Riding alone in a car is an increasingly unaffordable luxury
Yes, there would. It would be traffic jams full of buses.

bg4··on How to Be a Stoic (2016)
> avoiding suffering is not living to the fullest

Stoicism isn't about the avoidance of suffering. It's about accepting fate, loving others despite their behavior, and not creating anguish for yourself, in your own mind. It doesn't mean, however, that you don't attempt to put things in order and fix your problems.

"Accept the things to which fate binds you, and love the people with whom fate brings you together, but do so with all your heart."

"Be tolerant with others and strict with yourself."

"So you were born to feel 'nice'? Instead of doing things and experiencing them? Don't you see the plants, the birds, the ants and spiders and bees going about their individual tasks, putting the world in order, as best they can? And you're not willing to do your job as a human being? Why aren't you running to do what your nature demands?"

bg4··on Ask HN: Developers aged 50, how have you gotten around age discrimination?
I think you should question your own biases if you're this emotionally invested in a technology.

Agree 100%. A handful are awesome. Many are doing software for the wrong reasons and most are generating mountains of shit code.
