I used to take HN seriously, but I can't anymore. After years of contributing, it's clear the site is allergic to criticism of itself. Meta commentary about moderation or culture gets recoded as "crankiness" and penalized, no matter how well-founded.

This isn't about one downvote. After 5 years I never reached the 501 karma required just to downvote, a basic function. That's a system that rewards conformity while suppressing dissent.

When I updated this bio with critique, the moderator asked if I wanted my account closed. When I pressed for an explanation, and pointed out how downvotes coincided with my emails, I got silence. That silence is its own answer.

HN isn't an open forum. It's internet feudalism: users generate the content, the lords guard the system, and feedback about that arrangement is unwelcome. That's why I'm done.

For $250/mo I would hope it includes API access to Gemini 2.5 pro, but it's nice to want things.
bezier-curve··on In a high-stress work environment, prioritize relationships
Unfortunately this also seems to pave the way for cronyism, and people climbing up the ladder without merit to back it up. What should be considered is a balance between soft and hard skills.
bezier-curve··on ChatGPT is leaking users data (files)
If the writer of this post had a point, it was not obvious to me. I saw his prompt, I saw ChatGPT dump binary and then switch to Portuguese. Very confusing.

I'm thinking if the org that trained the model, and is doing interesting research of trying to understand how LLMs actually work on the inside [1], their caution might be warranted.

The best way around this is to dump documentation of the APIs you need them privy to into their context window.
bezier-curve··on Earth's clouds are shrinking, boosting global warming
This is a basic reductionist take, it's really easy to group hundreds of millions of people into one group, right? We're all mourning the loss of the US government, but the people are still here, we're just blinking for help.
bezier-curve··on Earth's clouds are shrinking, boosting global warming
My brain turns off when someone says "leftist", tell us you're a conservative without telling us. The internet used to be nuanced, those were the days.
bezier-curve··on Earth's clouds are shrinking, boosting global warming
Not sure, do you know? Nobody here knows. But what's certain is OP commenter's comment was cheesy and annoying.
bezier-curve··on Bye, Prime
The more I use the Amazon, the sketchier it feels. I was misguided and spent the last year buying way too many niche things and was invited into their Amazon Vine program. I got a tax bill I can't actually afford but opted to put it on my credit card rather than a loan situation because I don't trust our institutions now that DOGE is pillaging IRS data.

Edit: Right, done being discouraged from feeling like an equal participant on a gamified karma platform run by startup jerks.

bezier-curve··on Resigning as Asahi Linux project lead
Love how people can be openly hostile towards me on this website, and I get downvotes and misdirected frustration for pointing it out.

Isn't that also what Linus is doing but on a professional forum, which is even worse? The issue comes down to de-escalation, and there wasn't enough on both sides. It's also not unreasonable to expect more from a figure head who is a role model in open-source development in general.

bezier-curve··on Resigning as Asahi Linux project lead
Your comment has nothing to do with someone trying to ironically gatekeep me from commenting on Linus' public behavior in response to my comment about gatekeeping.
bezier-curve··on Resigning as Asahi Linux project lead
This is a rude comment that isn't downvoted because of hive mind effects. Not biting.
bezier-curve··on Resigning as Asahi Linux project lead
What does social media have to do with bad code, though?
bezier-curve··on Resigning as Asahi Linux project lead
I think if I was indicted by Linus and told I'm a problem over spreading awareness about a position on social media, I too would burn out pretty quickly. That's how you crush motivation. There's a deeper issue in open-source culture where harshness and gatekeeping drive away passionate contributors.

Yeah, I like how HN keeps increasing the karma threshold for just being able to downvote. I don't often get downvotes, but when I do it's definitely for wrong think and attempting to disarm people with humor. I'm sorry but this platform needs to treat people like humans, and I refuse to be a part of it from this point on because of that. If I could downvote and move on, I'd comment less. This platform is toxic.
bezier-curve··on TikTok goes dark in the US
Edit: I'm done interacting with this platform that ironically doesn't respect people's boundaries and is more of a club house of narrow perspectives centered around increasing wealth for select technical communities.
bezier-curve··on TikTok goes dark in the US
I deleted that comment because it got downvotes. Downvote this one too, tech startup incubator trolls.

Edit: Also reaffirming my position the parent commenter is a combative CCP apologizer using irrelevant comparisons, as all the sibling conversation clearly points out.

bezier-curve··on Disappointed with the TVs at CES 2025
When I first got a Roku TV I had to uninstall a ton of applications that were auto installed, which are treated just as equally as your actual inputs on the home screen. Then once I got that done I later realized removing an input device left that tile on the screen, you would think the OS could be smart enough to see that the device isn't connected for a while and maybe drop it off after some time? I find Roku TV kind of clunky.
bezier-curve··on You can't optimize your way to being a good person
This was my impression as well, not sure who the article is for but it's not me, I don't like feeling patronized.
bezier-curve··on Are Immutable Linux Distros right for you?
Is immutability's benefits not the "integrity" of a system? This seems pedantic.

I hate to break the hacker news guidelines but this does feel like hacker news is a lot like Reddit.
bezier-curve··on Ask HN: How do you communicate in a remote startup?
There's also such a thing as oversharing context with people that are already burdened with a lot of context related to their own tasks. Splitting off into private conversations helps keep irrelevant members from context switching.
bezier-curve··on Trump wins presidency for second time
To me it seems like Democrats just failed to listen to their constituents, and being one who wanted Bernie Sanders to have some chance at running in 2016 and 2020, I think this is the reckoning of that more than anything. The Democrats have ignored their own base and this is what happens when they pander to signals from everywhere else.
bezier-curve··on All We Have in This World Is Ourselves
The sheer volume of social information we process daily through social media might be straining our emotional machinery beyond the abilities we evolved with [1]. If someone is going through a loss, I try to make their lives a little easier. I feel like our constant growth-based economic society with income inequality issues has poisoned our ability to empathize with coworkers because of competition, and speaking only for myself personally, I would like to rein in these traits of my nature. Be the change you want to see in the world, it doesn't have to be solely about yourself.

bezier-curve··on Contempt for the glue people
I just don't understand the romanticism that's been cultivated with joining these large companies. I interviewed with Google after they reached out to me many years ago, because I had a chrome extension that someone noticed. At the time I thought that was cool. They rejected me because I was anxiously preparing for it the wrong way. That's part of my bias here as well - they didn't need to reach out to someone self-taught. But looking back, I think of all of the things the recruiter was telling me, and the arrogance of them just name dropping "google" and expecting me to bow, and I think bullet dodged. Employment is a social contract just as much as a legal one, and it goes both ways.
bezier-curve··on Contempt for the glue people
I don't care how rich he is, he's wrong. Companies need people at the boundaries of context to clue people in, especially at the rate companies like Google lay people off.
